I use a calculator quite often at work. This is a long exposure where I moved my hand to use the calculator.

The Beginning of Missile Range Computational Equipment

The Monroe desk calculator displayed here was the backbone of the Missile Range data reduction effort for more than 20 years. This and earlier models were employed from 1950 into the 1970's by analysts in the data reduction organizations at White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base and the Physical Science Laboratory (PSL) at New Mexico State University.

During the 1945-50 period preliminary reduction of test data measurements was often accomplished by the instrumentation personnel of the White Sands Annex of the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) with the more complex data processing and final reduction of test data being performed by BRL's Computing Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD and by PSL. The Computing Section of White Sands Annex was organized in July 1950. The section initially relied solely on Monroe and later Friden desk calculators. The Computing Section was reorganized as the Data Reduction Branch in 1951. In May 1951 an IBM Card Programmed Calculator (CPC) was obtained and installed in the basement of Building 100. By 1953 four CPC'S were in use and the operation was relocated in Building S-1650.

In late 1954 with the completion of Building 1512, the Data Reduction Branch was relocated in that building and the ERA (Univac) 1103, serial number 3, was installed there when it was delivered in March 1955. The 1103 replaced the CPC's and was in turn replaced in March 1962 with an IBM 7090. With the installation of the Univac 1108 in Building 1526 in July 1971 the Data Reduction function was also relocated here from Building 1512. During these two decades (1950-1970) White Sands data analysts continued to depend on their Monroe and Friden calculators to compute optical miss distance, two and three station cinetheodolite solutions, coordinate transformation, Dovap check points and other requirements. Many were so proficient that they would beat the turnaround time of a batch processing, large scale computer by hours.

Being Asian and all you get this oh you are good at math right? Well to tell you the truth back in the day when I was in school, I was pretty dang good, now I am terrible, after elementary school they give you a calculator to do the math, then they take it away during exams.... WTF I know you get dependent on the calculator and bam you cant use it. Anyways I guess it is a good thing as in post sec, they expect you own one but not use it......

So as you can tell after you leave post sec you are so pissed off at the fact that they taken this magnificent creation away from you, that you force yourself to use it. Well let me tell you, 10 years departed from post sec and I depend on this even for the most basic math, what happened to my ability to of the multiplication tables?? I use to slam 2 numbers together in additive math like nothing, not its like quick what is 548 + 75, and bam I have to whip out the calculator.

I guess the same goes for those moments where you are chilling with your buddies and someone says something so unbelievable that you whip out your smart phone and Google it to prove them wrong.

People say our society comes come a long ways, well if we cannot do simply math without technology we are in fact lost... Maybe one day I will try to relearn math. I will put that on my list of things that I need to do but will not do. Hahaha why is it that my generation is so lazy (note I am a expert procrastinator).

The computer was a Ferranti Mark I*, designed at Manchester University (with help from the legendary Alan Turing) and built by British company Ferranti. The Amsterdam model was called MIRACLE, for "Mokums (Amsterdam's) Industrial Research Automatic Calculator for Laboratory and Engineering", but some people nicknamed it "May It Replace All Chaotic Laboratory Experiments". My mother was one of its programmers and kept a photo album.

Must be the engineer in me. On a recent 10 mile day hike with a 17 lb pack, I was curious about what my average speed was. Working backwards, this calculation does not eliminate two brief rest stops, a very short off-trail excursion, nor messing around with the cellphone time, all of which would occur on any similar trip, making these numbers handy for future reference. Since my route was a loop, and I know the cumulative elevation gain, the cumulative climbing is equal to the cumulative descending--about 2000 feet. About 2.4 mph all-in, which is not too shabby at an altitude of about 5000 feet ASL on sometimes rocky trails. Yeah, I'm completely bilingual when it comes to units, even nonsensical Imperial ones--I do all my flying in feet, knots, and inches of mercury, but increasingly I am hiking in kilometres and metres, since most of my topographic maps have gone metric.

Factoring trinomials calculator are in the form of ax2 + bx + c. Factoring Trinomials Calculator is an online tool to find factors of trinomial expressions. It makes calculation easy and fun. If any trinomial equation is given then it can easily find the factors of that expression.

Jan.5.2011 - I made a calculator cake for my newly retired ex-boss at my old accounting firm (WDM). I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, considering I wasn't sure what I was doing!

The girl at the kite shop really used this to tally our total. Seriously.
