Estimados amigos

Cable modem and router/firewall for the outside (broadband) connection.

July 30, 2011

Ten days in and I already almost forgot to take a photo. We were busy all morning and afternoon with getting settled in our new place and getting Dan's ready to be vacated, and then had a really great dinner/game night with friends. And as we walked in the door, I said "Ah, crap." And wandered around looking for a photo subject. New cable modem and wireless router bokeh seemed like just the thing.

This was sent by CableModem from Hawaii

Old comcast cablemodem and even older netgear rt311 router.

our 'net connection was slllooooowwwww this week.

and play4smee was getting a tad antsy.

thankfully, a tech came out today and fixed it (by selling us a new cable modem.

life returns to our network.

My office laptop now enjoys Internet connection wherever it's in range.

My lovely signal, with that nice high upstream dB level. Wonde if that is why I had to upload this with my Verizon card?

I have some trouble with my network since a whole month now.

The thing on the right is my (now opened) pc router/firewall.

He is working. Can't find any problem... but he only let's pass about 1% of my bandwidth to the other computers.

So currently i have to put my powerbook direktly to the cablemodem. No more internet in my bed until i have solved the problem. Not nice...

Lightning burned ether transciever is near top, to right of center, just below and a little to the right of the RJ-45 socket.

Front reorg:

RS/6000-H70 (AIX 5.3), cableModem, Cisco 1600 (IOS 12.1)

DEC Alpha Multia/UDB (OpenBSD 4.3), 486-SX33 (OpenBSD3.2/ipf), RS/6000-250(AIX 4.3.3), Sun Netra i (Solaris9), DEC VAX 4000/100 (openVMS 7.3)

Wow, much faster internet, but a lot more money. Cable, while costing more, gave a lot less service and services. Glad to be shut of them!

I just saw that I wasn't the first one with this motif this week. But for me (who can still remember when modems measured transfer speeds in "baud" and you could probably shout the data faster to the recipient), our dear little cable modem is still a modern marvel. 24 million bits every second - theoretically. Much nicer than when we use the same connection for television.

And now back to work, tuesday's photo is going to be a bit more... elaborate.

TCA Communications, Inc. is a television/internet provider servicing over 670,000 basic subscribers in 63 cable television systems in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Idaho.

2 computers, printer, phone, wireless printserver, router, cablemodem -- sigh...

Yep, for about... 5 months, we had a cable box, our game systems and the LCD monitor that I bought. Yeah, needless to say, that's a pretty sad sight.

From top to bottom:

Samsung 20" HDTV monitor/tuner

60GB Video iPod

OMG! What am I going to do with no internet connection? Only two lights are on, but all of them are supposed to be lit. In fact, that's what the cable company told me. I told them that I know all the lights are supposed to be on--that's the problem!!

Here you can see my wireless router and my cablemodem in the back.

After putting up with frequently being disconnected in the middle of watching movies, not being able to connect at all, slower than dial-up (sometimes) connection speeds, lag, sporadic bandwidth, and horrible customer service; we gave cox the boot and opened our doors to 10/2 Verizon FiOS. I must say I'm pleased.
