A Soldier assigned to Headquarters Headquarters Company, 6th Battalion, 1st Battalion Training Group (Airborne), United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School free falls into St. Mere Drop Zone on Sept. 18, 2014, as part of the 6th Battalion Command Sergeant Major Challenge. The CSM Challenge was an endurance race. Teams had to navigate approximately 20-miles of terrain and negotiate obstacles along the route, such as a rope bridge, open swim with equipment in tow, a boat paddle, a boat carry, downed pilot scenario and a weapons range. The event provided a friendly competition while building unit cohesion and boost esprit de corps.

Command Sergeant Major Earlene Y. Lavender is a native of Kentucky. She enlisted in the Army on August 31, 1983 and attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana where she was awarded Personnel Administrative Specialist as her Primary Military Occupational Specialty. CSM Lavender's overseas assignments include Nurnberg and Erlanger Germany, Fort Richardson, Alaska, Fort Kobbe, Panama, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her last assignment was as the Garrison CSM, United States Army Garrison Red Cloud, Korea.

 

Her stateside assignments include tours at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort McClellan, Alabama, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Lewis, Washington. She has served in a variety of duty positions to include Personnel Administrative Specialist, Personnel Administration Center Supervisor, Drill Sergeant, Personnel Operation Branch, G1 Strength Manager, Fitness Training Battery. She also served as the Alpha Battery, 95th Reception Battalion First Sergeant and CSM for the 22d Personnel Service Battalion at Fort Lewis, Washington where her battalion was forward deployed.

 

Command Sergeant Major Lavender has attended various military schools including the Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Drill Sergeant School, First Sergeant School, the Sergeants Major Academy "Class 54", the Command Sergeants Major Designee Course, and the Garrison Sergeants Major Course. She also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Studies from the University of Excelsior.

 

Her personal awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Silver, with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (Second Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (Silver, with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Army Drill Sergeant Badge.
