History has not been kind to General Van Dorn but few started out with greater promise. Born in Port Gibson MS in 1820, the son of a judge. His mother was a niece of Andrew Jackson who helped secure his appointment to West Point. He graduated in 1842, married in 1843. He served with distinction in the Mexican War, being wounded at Mexico City. He also served in the Indian Wars against the Seminoles in Fla. and the Comanche's in Texas where he was wounded again. At the onset of the Civil War he resigned his US commission to fight for the South. Rapidly promoted to Brig. and then Maj. Gen. he commanded Confederate forces at Pea Ridge Ark. where he was defeated. He also was unsuccessful in his effort to retake Corinth MS. Transferred to a Calvary command, Van Dorn did much better. His brilliant raid on Grant's supply depot at Holly Springs helped save Vicksburg. It appeared that Van Dorn might have great promise as a Cavalry leader if not from some issues with his personal life. Van Dorn had a reputation as a rake who loved the ladies whether married or not. One contemporary called Van Dorn "the terror of ugly husbands." On May 7, 1863, Van Dorn was shot in the back of the head while at his headquarters in Spring Hill Tenn. by Dr. George Peters over the supposed relationship Van Dorn had with Dr. Peter's wife. Van Dorn is buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson beside his father. His relationship with Mrs. Peters a subject of dispute to this day. (Photo 18 of 33)

The Campaign for a Scottish Assembly was a cross non-party pressure group launched in 1980 by politicians, academics and activists after the defeat of the 1979 devolution referendum. The Campaign for a Scottish Assembly was subsequently renamed the Campaign for a Scottish Parliament.
