Picture: An empty CS grenade that had been used on labour day 2011 in Zurich, Langstrasse area.
There wasn't much of a riot in Zurich on may day 2011. In the morning, trade unions and other left-wing interest groups and activitsts demonstrated for their respective goals, e.g. women's rights, general basic salary, against discrimination etc. Their appearance was organised, decent and peaceful. Gregor Gysi, head of the German left ("Die Linke") parliamentary group, spoke to the people. Micheline Calmy-Rey, Swiss foreign minister and high ranking feminist member of the Swiss social democrats, followed him.
Police locked down Helvetiaplatz at approx 1630 and checked everybody's ID. There hadn't been any violence yet. Yet, police had announced the lock-down through the media. Mr Cortesi, spokesman of Zurich metro police, had said to a local mainstream newspaper that police regards people met at Helvetialplatz at 1500 on may day as gapers and that gapers will be arrested. Slightly delayed, the lock-down was executed at 1630 only. Nobody was allowed to leave or enter the area. According to Zurich police 500 people had been arrested.
In the Langstrasse area there were minor clashes between a few vandals and Zurich riot units at approx 1800. The vandals set fire to some containers and threw bottles against the constables. The Zurich fire department extinguished the fires.
In one area it seemed that a misguided CS grenade fired by riot units had set fire to a dry compost pile. Police immediately used their extinguishers but called in the fire department to kill the fire definitively.
Police arrested more suspects. There were no further clashes afterwards.
