Melted some bismuth down with the kids today, because, you know, melted metal is fun. Tried to grow some crystals but were met with only mediocre success. It was fun anyway :)
The ice crystals look a bit like sugar if you view large. I used a circular pol-filter to get the sky darken a bit.
A beautiful section; it is a shame there is not always water in the friendly side valley, otherwise we would camp there.

images of different parts of a cluster of white and yellow crystals fluorescing.
Two images of the fluorescence of the 'mixed crystals' from a 404nm laser. The yellow crystals glow yellow/green while the white (clear) crystals glow red. Photographed through a yellow filter that does not completely suppress the blue laser.
Crystal Mills is about an hour south of Aspen. The drive to the mill is half the fun of photographing it. The road is one lane, filled with sharp rocks, steep cliffs and some pretty hairy moments. I hired some guy to take us their and I was really glad. We would have never made it by ourselves.
Crystal Cave is the most famous of Bermuda's many subterranean caverns. It is located in Hamilton Parish, close to Castle Harbour. The cave is approximately 500 m long, and 62 m deep. The cave formed at lower sea level and, as the sea level rose, many speleothems, which formed in air, now are under water level.
A tourist attraction since 1907, it was discovered in 1905 by Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis, two 12 year-old boys searching for a lost cricket ball, which has never been found! Soon after, the Wilkinson family (the owners of the property since 1884) learned of the discovery, Mr. Percy Wilkinson lowered his 14 year-old son Bernard into it with a bicycle lamp on 140 feet of strong rope tied to a tree to explore the cave.
The area surrounding Harrington Sound is of limestone formation and noted for many subterranean waterways, through which the waters of the sound empty into the Atlantic. Crystal Cave is one of these, and - as its name suggests - is one of the most spectacularly beautiful, with many stalactites, stalagmites, and deep crystal-clear pools.

Crazy Water Crystals, advertised widely on the radio, were allegedly derived from health-giving Crazy Mineral Water found in Texas. The FDA seized the latter multiple times in the 1910s and 1920s for adulteration and misbranding, in part for claims to treat Bright’s disease, rheumatism, liver disorders, etc. The Crystals emerged by the early 1930s, but without the labeled therapeutic claims, which were transferred to ads.

These Crystal Showers Earrings are made from the same pattern as the Showers Earrings in green and pearl. I just substituted different colors for the beads and Swarovski Crystal AB teardrops for the pearl teardrops.
Here's a photo of a Malachite crystals specimen. Star of the Congo mine, Republic of Congo. Approximately 5.75" x 3.5" Shooting a normal exposure, the reflection off the crystals just produced bright points of light, but down 2/3 of a stop, and the grain and color of the crystals becomes visible.
A few days after getting this specimen, I heard a program on "conflict minerals" in the Congo; somewhat like blood diamonds. In the Congo, many mines are now controlled by militias that get their funding from mineral sales. It's large, industrial sales that rake in most of the money, but if I'd heard this program a few days earlier I might have passed....
This is what I imagine Darwin would look like if he were a meth addict. In reality, this is what he looks like after playing at the beach.

Crystal Barbie came with these awesome clear heels with silver glitter. I remember being in awe of them when I looked at my older sister's Crystal Barbie. I was happy when I bought a loose but complete Crystal for my own collection as an adult that she had her awesome shoes! When I dressed Odile in Crystal's gown I wasn't sure the shoes would fit (they probably do? MTM feet are pretty small) but since I wanted to pose them together I didn't want to "steal" the shoes for Odile. Anyway, I remembered that Dressmaker Details made some clear glitter slingbacks in the Silkstone mold and now they have matching shoes!
Natalia Zaitseva, of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory works with growth and characterization of new single-crystal materials, which are used in neutron detection equipment. The solution-growth crystallizers, used previously for rapid growth of large KDP crystals for the National Ignition Facility, have been modified for growth of organic scintillator crystals. Recently grown 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene single crystal, shown on the pictures taken in white (this photo) and ultra-violet light (adjacent photo), is among a number of newly-discovered materials with superior properties for high-energy neutron detection in the presence of strong gamma-radiation background. The temperatures were only a little above 0°F last night and there were ice crystals on the windows, so I whipped out the macro lens and took a few photos. Unfortunately they're not very crisp because I had to shoot through three panes of glass and didn't set up the tripod since the ice crystals were melting quickly in the morning sun. PP: defog USM and mild cropping.
