Trevorgans Cross, St. Buryan, Cornwall
This Pre-Conquest cross on circa late C19 or early C20 base is situated by the A30 at the junction with a minor road running south to St. Buryan. A figure of Christ with outstretched arms and feet turned out is depicted on the north face and it has an old fracture running diagonally just below the neck.
The stone was moved to this site at the beginning of the last century from where it formerly stood at SW40202655 and mounted on its present stepped base stone.

The facade or liturgical 'west' window at the Sacred Heart church in Bilton, viewed from the gallery. before the re-ordering of 1990 the main entrance was below this window and the space beneath the gallery used as a narthex, now converted into the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
This window is part of the original glazing from 1958, and unlike most o the other windows here from this time has not been modified since.
There was some talk of replacing it with a new design following my work on the Creation windows nearby (Fr Paul was particularly unhappy with the peculiar crosses issuing sunbeams around the central crown of thorns motif), but unfortunately this project never got off the drawing board).
Holy Cross is the parish church of the town of Daventry, a classical-inspired building of rich local ironstone which was built to replace the previous medieval church in 1752-8 to the designs of David Hiorne. The exterior is dominated by the west tower and spire (a slightly odd design more like an obelisk crowned by an orb and cross) and remains unaltered since it was built aside from the addition of a small projecting west porch in the 1950s, designed so sympathetically that no one would suspect it wasn't part of the original design. The design might have looked a little severe had it not been for the warmth of the honey-coloured stonework and the softening effect of two and a half centuries of weathering.
Within the church looks quite different, all light with a white plaster finish and touches of gilding. It is very much a typical example of an English Baroque town church, a handsome affair with galleries on either side of the nave, reducing the aisles beneath to more lowly dimensions. The eye is drawn to the chancel beyond which has a fine reredos with early 20th century paintings of the three Marys and the Angel at the empty tomb flanked by Archangels. The 'Venetian' east window above has Victorian glass but otherwise most of the other windows have ornamental glazing (originally they would have been clear).
The church normally has only limited opening times outside of services, but I was lucky enough to find it open on a Saturday morning while a few parishoners were setting some stalls up and they fortunately didn't seem to mind my intrusion.

Saxon cross shaft one of many that were set at convenient sites for itinerant monks or priests to preach to the inhabitants. These crosses were probably placed at sites that were already considered sacred in pagan worship. Originally found in 1809, it was again discovered near the foundations of the north wall during the 1885 restoration !!.
On the front is Christ on the cross with a man holding the sponge on a reed on the left, a soldier holding a spear on the right. Above on either side is the sun and moon. . Above are feet of a lost figure suggesting an ascension scene .
