And again and again and again and again

Today, countless Veterans Day observances are taking place across the country in the form of speeches, reflections and parades. We too are pausing to pay tribute to the service of our men and women who’ve worn the uniform of service. More than 240 BGE employees, who have proudly served as Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman and/or Guard, are being presented with a Veterans Day pin as a token of our gratitude. We admire their courage, dedication to duty and love of country.

Countless school desks lay scattered and tossed just inside the front entrance of the school.

And I saw the countless lights striving to get me out of my darkness..

One passed and then another one.. and kept passing while I kept pretending I don't understand what they wanted to do.. and they only wanted to uncover my mind from the foggy sheet I unwittingly hauled over it.

:)) Just tryed to invent a story for this composition.. I admit I enjoy seeing these little light squares as thoughts in people's minds.

Photo captured in (u won't belive) the hall of my grandparents house; post processing was simple, I added a slight blue tint on the image. The black is real, the hall is pure dark when doors are closed.

I've walked by countless Greenpeace canvassers with only a friendly "no thanks" and a smile.

This time I had time to spare - and it was Daisy's engaging smile that made the real difference.

Daisy made me stop, then Daisy made me care.

She brought my attention to the devastating Alberta Tar sands. I didn't know nearly enough about Canada's homegrown 'dirty oil' efforts. I decided to be proactive with our time and asked her everything she knew about the project. Depressing. Enlightening. Energizing. Classic Greenpeace. I became a supporting member of Greenpeace that day. I asked Daisy if I could photograph her for '100 strangers' on the corner with no less than 3 gas stations.

The following days found me thinking the Tar sands and our encounter with great frequency. I added the frame to suggest this, and to suggest how Daisy's influence can help dissolve those gas stations into pure white.

"This picture is #101 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com"

Confession: Another reason I stopped - I was on my way to spend $10 at a fast food chain.

Update September 2011: 100 strangers has re-opened group contributions to those over 100 strangers. I'm thrilled to return to participating in a group that has given my photographic life so much! Brilliant actually.

Countless families were rendered homeless as floods destroyed and uprooted villages and communities.

"The lavenders (Lavandula) are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region south to tropical Africa and to the southeast regions of India. The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, south Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia, and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens world-wide, they are occasionally found growing wild, as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. Because lavender cross-pollinates easily, however, there are countless variations within the species. The color of its flowers has come to be called lavender."

The attractive town of Tewkesbury has been dominated by its superb abbey church since the beginning of the 12th century, and we can be forever grateful to its townspeople for purchasing the monastic church in 1540 for £453 for use as their parish church, saving it from the fate that befell countless similar great churches across the land during the turmoil of the Dissolution. It reminds us both how lucky we are to still marvel at it today, yet also how great a loss to our heritage the period wrought when many more such buildings were so utterly plundered as to have gone without trace (the fate of the monastic buildings here and even the lady chapel of the church whose footings are laid out in the grass at the east end).

Tewkesbury Abbey is thus rightly celebrated as one of our greatest non-cathedral churches, and remarkably much of the original Norman church remains substantially intact, most apparently in the great central tower, a fine example of Romanesque architecture adorned with rows of blind-arcading. The west front is dominated by a massive Norman-arched recess (enclosing the somewhat later west window) and the nave and transepts remain largely as originally built, though this is less clear externally owing to the changes made to the windows, nearly all of which were enlarged in the 14th century in the Decorated Gothic style. This century also saw the complete rebuilding of the eastern limb of the church, of a form less common in England with radiating chapels surrounding the eastern apse of the choir (the central lady chapel sadly missing since 1540).

The interior reveals far more of the Romanesque structure with mighty columns supporting the round Norman arches of the nave arcades giving the building a great sense of solidity. The space is further enlivened by the changes made during the 14th century by the stunning vault over the nave (adorned with a rewarding series of figurative bosses) which sits surprisingly well with the Norman work below. Beyond the apsidal choir beckons, and both this and the space below the tower are enriched with stunningly complex vaulted ceilings (replete with further bosses and gilded metal stars), all ablaze with colour and gilding.

There is much to enjoy in glass here, most remarkably a complete set of 14th century glazing in the clerestorey of the choir, seven windows filled with saints and prophets (and most memorably two groups of knights in the westernmost windows on each side). A few of the figures have fared less well over the centuries but on the whole this is a wonderfully rare and well preserved scheme. There is much glass from the 19th century too, with an extensive scheme in the nave of good quality work by Hardman's, and more recently a pair of rich windows by Tom Denny were added in one of the polygonal chapels around the east end.

Some of the most memorable features are the monuments with many medieval tombs of note, primarily the effigies and chantry chapels of members of the Despenser family around the choir (two of the chantries being miniature architectural gems in their own right with exquisite fan-vaulting). In one of the apsidal chapels is the unusual cenotaph to Abbot Wakeman with his grisly cadaver effigy, a late medieval reminder of earthly mortality.

Tewkesbury Abbey is not to be missed and is every bit as rewarding as many of our cathedrals (superior in fact to all but the best). It is normally kept open and welcoming to visitors on a daily basis. I have also had the privilege of working on this great building several times over the years (as part of the team at the studio I once worked for), and have left my mark in glass in a few discreet places.

There are countless ways to honor the fallen on Memorial Day. Six USFOR-A Soldiers started their Memorial Day morning by performing the Cross Fit workout known as "The Murph" named after the first service member to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan, Lt. Michael P. Murphy.

The workout consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1 mile run with some of the Soldiers opting to do the whole workout wearing their body armor. All six participants finished the workout under the one hour mark. (U.S. Army Photo by Sgt. 1st Class David Wheeler, USFOR-A Public Affairs)

I have asked *countless* people for "pit-bull proof" dog toy recommendations. I've gotten some good ones that were worth the $10/toy investment, and some bad ones that resulted in probably $100s of dollars lost over the years.

This one pissed me off to no end. I went to Hollywood Feed, where I have gotten GREAT service and advice, and asked again. My little muppets have torn through the Orbee toys that were previously recommended, and it's time to move on to something that will last more than 2 hours.

Hollywood Feed had a display with a video that showed an adult tiger playing with a dog toy. The video, in fact, GUARANTEED that the toy was impervious to doggie damage. For $26.00, it damn well better be.

I got it home, threw it into the living room, and waited. A scant 3 hours later, there is fluff and fabric, and punctured squeakers all over the living room. They were either using a pussy-ass tiger in their promotional materials, or have just never met my dogs. Fortunately, this pricey mess DOES come with a "money back" guarantee. So, me and my little plastic bag full of toy remnants, will be heading back to the pet store for my refund tomorrow afternoon.

Your "tough guarantee" means nothing to my uber-destroyer dogs. If ANYONE can produce a toy that these two CAN'T destroy for more than 1 year (and that they actually *like*), I will give you a sizable reward.

Anyone up to the challenge??

These folks sure failed: www.vipproducts.com/retail/files/index.php?cPath=27_106

Moonstone Beach Park @ Cambria, California

Tanque Verde Ridge Trail, Saguaro National Park.

Countless scenes like these ruined today's hike for me.

I was last on this trail on March 6, without incident. I'm up here every week or two and would be aware of any big changes.

Today I noticed hundreds... HUNDREDS... of orange blazes painted on rocks on or immediately adjacent to the trail within a span of less than two miles. Even worse, there were about half a dozen prickly pears and a fern that had also been spray-painted. Lastly (not as serious but still annoying and unnecessary) dozens of ocotillos and trailside trees had been wrapped with small pinkish-purplish ribbons. I could see more ribbons in the distance from my turnaround point, so I suspect the damage extends further as well.

One of the few hikers I saw thought that there had been some sort of footrace (he mentioned Ironman, but I couldn't find that with a quick Google) through here last weekend, and the blazes were intended to help the runners stay on the trail.

I checked at Saguaro's visitor center upon my return and was advised that no race had been sanctioned by the park. I ultimately emailed a report and some photos to their law enforcement.

The Tanque Verde Ridge Trail is so easy to follow that even I never get lost up there. This is vandalism, plain and simple. With a whole lot of stupidity thrown in.

Countless bolts of lightning electrified the skies over the Bay Area! This was during a rare lightning outbreak! Pics were still-frames of video I have taken of the lightning while up at The Point Church in San Jose, CA. This was indeed probably the most intense lightning storm I've ever seen for my area! (Thursday evening, August 6, 2015)

Weather scenario:

Nearly 1,000 lightning strikes have lightened up the Bay Area skies Thursday night of August 6, 2015! This rogue lightning storm happened during a dry storm that even prompted a Red Flag Warning for fire danger due to dry lightning strikes. What was the cause of such rare weather for us? All this lightning and scattered rain showers were caused by a low-pressure storm system interacting with subtropical moisture flowing in from the southwest, along with some moisture being drawn up from distant Hurricane Guillermo near the Hawaiian Islands! Despite the storms being 'dry', some areas did get some trace amounts of rain. The lightning started about 8 p.m. PDT Thursday along the Big Sur coast and moved north through Santa Cruz and into the South Bay before heading over to the East Bay nearing midnight. This was surely one of the best lightning/thunderstorms I've witnessed in my life!
