Among the countless indispensible things we had to do without, the absence of colors—as you can imagine—was the least of our problems; even if we had known they existed, we would have considered them an unsuitable luxury.

These photos are failures from a strictly technical standpoint: a tripod (which I didn't have at the time) is required for really good photos of fireworks displays; I decided to steady my camera as much as possible, and hope for the best—one or two might turn out. They did turn out, in fact, but not in the way I was hoping. The photographs in this set are as imperfect as they are perfect, and reveal an unexpected beauty in the night sky that is truly captivating in a way that's difficult to describe.
I decided to pair each photo with a passage from one of Calvino's Cosmicomic stories, many of which are recounted by Qfwfq, an omnipresent, timeless, protean narrator. Each Cosmicomic story is fun, compelling, and extremely inventive, while presenting a version of reality that is completely obvious and (un)commonplace.

There are countless ways to honor the fallen on Memorial Day. Six USFOR-A Soldiers started their Memorial Day morning by performing the Cross Fit workout known as "The Murph" named after the first service member to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan, Lt. Michael P. Murphy.
The workout consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1 mile run with some of the Soldiers opting to do the whole workout wearing their body armor. Countless cats make Fushimi Inari Taisha their home. This one in particular scared the litter out of the photographer, who was walking alone through the woods as the sun was beginning to set. Walking alone deep into this vast wooded mountain complex of Shinto shrines is an otherworldly experience. Nothing shockingly mystical, but the absence of other hikers this far up the trail in the evening, leaves one only with one's thoughts, the cats, the birds, the rustling of wind through foliage, and a camera.

Mattel has released countless campers over the decades but this particular design was very popular due to the fact that the car portion detached from the trailer and could hold 6 dolls! The trailer itself folded out to create a very regular space and still looked like a trailer, which many of the modern campers don't. They open up in such a weird way that they lose the sense of space. I find that irregularity tiring. Needless to say that the hinges are usually very fragile so a simple solution is always best.
The trailer has a sleeping area with a storage compartment under the bed. There's a little kitchenette with a fridge and a microwave that open. There's a sink too and a little vanity that turns into a stove ora grill. There's also plenty of space to maneuver your dolls!
All the accessories are missing, except for the little blanket. There should also be a pillow a folding table with two chairs, two plates, two sets of cutlery, two goblets, candles and a tray and some cardboard pieces as well. I have a replacement table and chairs as well as the dishes, but about a year ago I came across an auction with all the accessories but no camper. At that time I didn't think I would ever get the camper so I let it pass. I wish I hadn't.

I have taken countless pictures of this subject. but today I managed to get a shot that I really like. The perspective is a welcome change to what I usually do and it worked out well for my taste. It was somewhat difficult for me to drop the colors on this image, but it benefitted from it greatly.

Countless number of people have walked through these doors at one time. They were married, baptized, comforted and given their last respects in life. Today these door no long swing open every Sunday. The Zoars Evangelical Reformed Church in tiny Hunts Corners, Ohio, is only used for special occasions.

I was driving home at dusk after my final stop in Benson last Thursday and noticed all the stacked-up washers and fridges reflected in the water. I like this time of year because I get these great glimpses of the mountains reflected in the shallow pools of snowmelt all over the fields out in the valley. I'll need to take some shots on some calm evening before everything dries out.
Bertram, Burnet County, Texas. Like countless towns across Texas, Bertram was born by the railroad and lived by the railroad -- it was even named by the railroad! When a narrow-gauge rail was laid down from the granite quarries near Burnet to transport rock used in the construction of the new Texas capital building in Austin 1882, the small town of Bertram was born, named after the majority stockholder in the railroad. The town prospered as a shipping point (especially cotton), but as with most smaller communities it was hit hard by the Great Depression. But Bertram lives on, although these days it is best known for its annual Oatmeal Festival (in honor of the nearby ghost town of Oatmeal). I'll write up a longer, more detailed description at a later date.

The Camp White Military Museum holds countless pieces of war memorabilia and personal stories at the Southern Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs in White City, Oregon, Sept. 26, 2018. BLM photo: Matt Christenson
Eighty-seven-year-old Al Inlow may be the only person in the world who knows the full story of Camp White, before, during and after its existence.
His family moved to Medford in 1932.
His father, a lumberjack, cut the trees that built the military base.
His great-grandmother’s grave at Antioch Cemetery was covered with dirt by the Army to protect it from incoming bombs.
Inlow himself joined the military at age 17, and after nearly 50 years of service with the Army, Marine Corps and Department of Defense, he is now the volunteer curator at the Camp White Military Museum.
“This museum represents the history of Camp White, plus we represent other services and other wars,” said Inlow during a recent tour.
The entire museum resides in one very long hallway inside the Southern Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs. The building was constructed in 1942 to be the Camp White headquarters.
The right side of the hallway is lined with display cases built by a Camp White veteran that are packed with donated military memorabilia: medals of valor, like the Silver Star; weaponry displays from both Axis and Allies; and the shrapnel from one 500-pound bomb dropped on the Camp White artillery range at Upper Table Rock.
“If it’s painted blue, it’s a practice shell,” said Inlow at the mortar exhibit of both unexploded and exploded ordinances from Camp White.
“This here is the rifle that won World War II,” he said later, pointing to the 30-caliber M1 Garand.
The left side of the hallway is dedicated to the 91st and 96th, the two main divisions that trained at Camp White. The 91st deployed to Europe and helped liberate Italy, while the 96th served in the Pacific theater.
Inlow carries no notes and takes no breaks during his tours. Sometimes he talks to youth about the past and sometimes his job is just to let people cry in the museum. All of it is important to him, he said.
“I think people are kind of waking up to the fact that we got to preserve this history,” said Inlow. “And if we don’t do something, then it’s lost. Period.”
