Smile on Saturday - Catmania. I used a cat face painted on a stone for this image along with some extra editing.

... I dont' know the band Subsonic Eye, just discovered the song by chance when looking for "Cosmic Realignment" (the name of the filter I used here) ... the sound reminds me a tiny bit of the The Maccabees

This is the roof of a cinema complex in my city (looking straight up). In my eyes it looks like a spaceship - I am such a SciFi fan ; ))

So I added the filter 'Cosmic Realignment' (Topaz Studio) just for fun (it's the blue-magenta galaxy-shaped bubble in the middle) and some further edit in Analog Efex (especially light leaks)

I had to crop the image on the right to cut away a pillar that destroyed the spaceship-look : ))

Happy (Sliders) Sunday !

A close up of the top of a large icicle...which is actually more like a frozen sheet of water. When the setting sun hit this icicle, it burst into colors and sparkles, reminding me of Hubble images of distant galaxies.

For the record..I am aware of the unsightly awning in the upper background...it almost kept me from posting this. I did try cropping it, but it didn't look right..so I let it be.

Edited to add: After viewing on my mobile phone I noticed the awning was barely visible due to the darker tones from increasing the contrast. Now I see why no one notices it..which is great!

Happy Macro Monday! Don't forget to zoom in :-)

Ever since I recently decided to try getting some shots of the Milky Way, I find myself looking forward to the new moon each month during Milky Way season. I plan my vacations and camping trips around the new moon, and enjoy looking for interesting objects that I can use to frame the shots. The night sky has an interesting way of making me feel pretty insignificant, but is very relaxing and is good therapy (for not worrying about small stuff I guess)!

MAGIC SPELL

To explain its efficacy to the point,

sympathy of nature becomes anoint.

The agreement of opposite forces,

like or unlike potential endorses.

Converged in multitudinous attraction,

divine utterance and holy shit fraction.

Spell binding dependence strife,

primal sorcerer and magi arts live.

Ensorcellations by being a fan,

upon another one of the clan.

Love induce mutual approach,

becoming a soul to soul coach.

Evocation and invocation of living things,

wisdoms and virtues liberating wings.

Enchantment in greatest demand,

like prayer and its fascinated wand.

Wrought like musical strings that vibrates,

into a third dimension migrates.

Perception in image of harmony,

affecting others quiet partially.

Sympathy constituted in contraries,

echoes of divine companies.

The soul that knows its history,

is aware and a tuned mystery.

Her source poised to the intent,

the magic spell and cosmic content.

Cathedral Spires trail in Custer State Park, SD.

Cropped slightly from a 360 x 180 degree panorama.

Multiple layers were shot at sunset, blue hour, and moonset to illuminate the landscape. Each of their individual hues can be seen painted across the spires in gold, blue, and orange. Then a moonless night sky was also shot around midnight to complete the sky.

Jellyfish in the Deep

The universe stabilized shortly after I deactivated my Cosmic Disruptor ray gun.

I must've died and gone to heaven

'Cause it was quarter past eleven

On a Saturday in 1999

Right across from where I'm standing

On the dance floor she was landing

It was clear that she was from another time

Like some baby Barbarella

With the stars as her umbrella

She asked me if I'd like to magnetise

Do I have to go star-trekking

'Cause it's you I should be checking

So she laser beamed me with her cosmic eyes

She's just a cosmic girl

From another galaxy

My heart's at zero gravity

She's from a cosmic world

Putting me in ecstasy

Transmitting on my frequency

She's cosmic

I'm scanning all my radars

Well she said she's from a quasar

Forty thousand million light years away

It's a distant solar system

Tried to phone but they don't list 'em

So I asked her for her number all the same

What you're looking at is NGC 2081 and surroundings, an emission nebula in the Dorado constellation, around 160000 light years from earth.

As is common for these types of regions, we see a lot of hydrogen gas and interstellar dust. But what is this dust exactly and where does it come from?

While the exact properties of said dust clouds are a bit difficult to describe in a few words; the short version is that they're made up from various heavier elements (carbon, silicon, iron,...). As the stars within our universe age (and generations of them come and go); the nuclear furnace in their cores will start fusing heavier and heavier elements to keep the star stable (until it can't and the star dies). Some of these elements remain present within the star until the end of its life; quite a bit of them get ejected out into space by stellar winds (in essence the nuclear pressure pushing outwards partially overwhelming the stars own gravity). In heavily populated areas of space (meaning lots of active stars in relative close proximity); these ejected elements will clump together and form these dense clouds.
