“Set the People Free” was a popular slogan of the Conservative political party used during both the 1950 and 1951 British general elections. This electoral campaign slogan advocated for the idea of greater individual control, self-reliance and a movement away from ‘State control’ over people’s lives arising from Labour’s socialist policies. Very much a form of free-market policy that continues to dominate Conservative political thought to this day.
After the war in 1945, the Labour party under the leadership of Clement Attlee was swept to power with great public expectations that were followed through with major reforms in social welfare, housing, nationalisations, public healthcare provisions, etc. However, by the end of the 1940’s public disillusion had set in and coupled with Labour’s 1948 austerity budget, continued rationing, ID cards (abolished 1952), housing shortages had set the tone for labour’s decrease in electoral support for both general elections. In October 1951, only some 20 months after Labour’s marginal victory in the 1950 election, the Conservatives took power by an equally slim majority of parliamentary seats, despite polling fewer votes.
During both election campaigns, Winston Churchill played-up his successful wartime record symbolised by depicting his two-finger V-sign for victory on the badge. SET THE PEOPLE FREE slogan was also a battle-cry alluding to the class struggles of post-war Britain and much attested to in the Conservative’s campaigning against the Labour government’s socialist policies.

Rafael Cruz
Pastor, Professor, Father of US Senator Ted Cruz
Rafael Cruz is the father of US Senator Ted Cruz. Rafael embodies the American Dream. Born in Cuba, he suffered under a cruel, oppressive dictator. He began fighting Batista’s regime as a teenager and was imprisoned and tortured – beaten nearly to death – simply to be free.
Rafael arrived in Texas in 1957 with nothing but the clothes on his back and one hundred dollars sewn into his underwear.
He got a job as a dishwasher, making 50 cents an hour, and worked his way through the University of Texas, while learning English.
Ted Cruz’s father then built a small business in further pursuit of the American Dream.
Rafael Cruz became active in conservative politics during the 1980 Presidential Campaign of Ronald Reagan. He also joined the State Board of The Religious Roundtable, a grassroots Judeo-Christian organization that had an important impact on the future of political dialogue.
Today, he is a pastor based in North Texas serving as the Director of Purifying Fire Ministries, ministering in the U.S., Mexico and Central America. He is also a professor of Bible and Theology, and the president of Kingdom Translation Services.

Painting and markings:
Well, a conservative choice, and since I wanted to stay true to the original CG design, I stuck to classic RN colors in the form of Extra Dark Sea Grey (Humbrol 123) for the upper surfaces and Sky (Tamiya XF-76 IJN Green Grey, which is a very similar, yet slightly darker tone) for the undersides, with a high waterline. A personal twist came through Korean War era “invasion stripes”, which were carried for easy identification esp. by propeller-driven aircraft in order to avoid friendly AA fire from the ground. The stripes were created after basic painting with white and black generic decal sheet material (TL Modellbau): large white bands (32 mm wide) as foundation, with single black bands (each 6.4 mm wide) added on top. Application around the radar pod and on the slightly tapered fuselage was a bit tricky, but IMHO still easier than trying to mask and paint the stripes.
Other markings were puzzled together from a PrintScale Fairey Firefly sheet, from different Korean War era aircraft.
As per usual, the kit received a light black ink wash in order to emphasize the engraved surface details, and then the panels were highlighted through dry-brushing. Lightly chipped paint was simulated with dry-brushed silver and light grey, and gun and exhaust soot were created with grinded graphite.
Finally, everything was sealed under a mix of Italeri’s matt and semi-gloss acrylic varnishes, for a sheen finish.
