RACKWICK

by George Mackay Brown

Let no tongue idly whisper here

Between those strong red cliffs,

Under that great mild sky

Lies Orkney’s last enchantment,

The hidden valley of light

Sweetness from the clouds pouring

Songs from the surging sea

Fenceless fields, Fishermen with ploughs and old heroes

Endlessly sleepingin

Rackwick’s compassionate hills.

Dedicated to Aella, my granddaughter, who turned 12 today. You taught me to be a grandmother and I’m happier because you were born. May your dreams come true and may you thrive in the knowledge that you are loved.

I was visiting a sick friend in the hospital and I happened to look up over her bed and see what looked (to me) like a very compassionate light fixture. It also seemed as though it might burst into tears, any second. It was a little weird, almost like having a relationship with a light fixture. I've got to get more sleep !!

"The Dew of Compassion is a Tear." A quote from Lord Byron… I shot this droplet sitting on the leaf of a shrub and thought it was an appropriate name for the photo!

Abuse comes in many forms

It is not always the bruised eye

or the broken bones

It's the unseen emotional abuse that is difficult to discern

Sadly, being kind compassionate you seem to attract the emotional abusers

It's as if they see you as weak because of your kindness

Everyone has their breaking point

This is not singled out to any particular individual for there have been many who have worn me down through their emotionally abusive ways and sometimes verbal abuse, nasty comments

Verbal and physical abuse is easy to detect, whilst emotionally abusing a person whether that be by exclusion, controlling, manipulation have the same devastating effect upon a person.

Don't think because you see me happy, inclusive and enjoying life that I have not had my share of heartache

Some seem to see this side of me as a threat to them in some way

You can never know the path another has walked upon

So don't judge me

You have no idea of the pain and suffering I have endured in this lifetime

I am a kind person, compassionate and caring

And wish only good for all humanity

But attack me, treat me badly

I am done with making excuses for badly behaved people

I too have feelings, I feel energy and this makes me super sensitive to your energy.

Collectively, it takes it toll

We all have our breaking point

I have always believed in kindness, forgiveness, compassion

I have always loved humanity

I have always seen the good in others - even when people have behaved badly toward me - I have always looked for the good in others

I have always wished only the best for others

I have never seen others as a threat to me in anyway

I am a lover not a fighter

But push me now and I will not hold back

There is no room in my life for you

I simply walk away

I have a great capacity to forgive

But that does not mean I have to stay

Only for a person to do more of the same toward me - those days are gone

I am tired of the games that people play

The greed, the rudeness, competition against each other, the mind games, being singled out, being ignored, jealousy, kicking a person when they are already down - all of these traits are old paradigms and for far too long too many bullies have continued to spread their toxic energy on others

These ways of being will not be tolerated

Humanity collectively needs to awaken - we can and we will live in harmony with one another

But ask me to stay around toxic people or to tolerate this energy - never again

I have turned the other cheek too many times

Only to be kicked down again and again

I have reached my breaking point with rude toxic people or people who try and manipulate me

Let's collectively live in harmony, in joy

Life is difficult enough without toxic people making our lives more difficult

Excerpt from waterdownvillage.ca/chairing_is_caring/:

Chairing is Caring is an exciting downtown art project celebrating local artists and telling stories of the diverse communities that are part of Waterdown Village. This summer, you’ll find painted Muskoka chairs in outdoor gallery locations at sponsor businesses bringing vibrancy to our streetscape and providing interesting places to sit and relax.

Each chair focuses on a theme as interpreted by the artist and is tied to a non-profit organization that supports an equity-deserving group. Collectively, the series highlights the compassionate and collaborative soul of our Village.

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT

Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

We need to all fight for our children to grow up in a world where racism is not prevalent, where lives are not limited and where people are truly judged on their character and not the color of their skin. It boggles my mind sometimes how far from Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream we still are. We have a congress that wants to take away health care, some of these same congressman are saying they honor Martin Luther King Jr. today even though King said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

And we have a president who says the most racist things that one can possibly imagine any political leader ever saying. Where does that leave us in the world today? That leaves us, no matter what our race is, to not be silent and to be vocal in the streets. We must stand up for this next generation of beautiful children to have access to a quality public education, to quality health care, to highly skilled jobs, to in all accounts the pursuit of happiness, to an environment that has stabilized and to liberty.

Sometimes, it is really difficult for me, even though I am white, to not despair myself. I feel like our nation has taken steps backwards not forwards with Trump and all the beautiful children I help, regardless of race, I want them to have a life that entails all of these things. But, I also truly believe that if King were alive today, he would encourage people to not give up the fight. We have to remember, as Americans, our country is only worthwhile if we fight for the best it can be and can offer all of our immigrants and citizens both.

Dr. King also said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." We should all make an effort to be kinder, to listen to each other, to be compassionate and to reveal insight and light as a counter to arguments that support discrimination. We are at a time when we all have to fight for human rights. Protests were even less popular during Martin Luther King's time period and he gave his life fighting for justice. Let us be inspired by his bravery not just today but in all days going forwards.

Another silly title or is it? I have memories of seeing something that struck me as very different from this mood and quite compassionate while viewing the great migration in Tanzania on another safari.

One wilderbeest had injured itself and was limping very badly and could not go on with the herd I saw another uninjured wilderbeest, by his side, as they wandered off from the main herd. I wish I knew more about the nature of what i saw as a act of kindness or compassion.

I met Laundry Liz, a name we both agreed on , down at the washmat in town a few weeks ago. She had this crazy vintage looking bicycle on the back of her van and I had to know who's it was so I asked her.. We ended up talking for quite a while about everything and everything. Slowly over time she told me just about her whole story , which parts of it are hard to hear and harder to imagine and digest.

A week or so ago I asked her if I could photograph her for a project of mine , she agreed , we continued to talk and I got to know her even better, ups and downs, struggles, hopes and dreams, regrets and precious memories she has.

.

After some some serious dental work she decided on having her dentures made Her way, green glitter gums, a diamond and a peace sign in the front. Just one of the gems that make her up as a person.

Homeless , living in her van , working in town , saving money, taking care of her Dog, eating best she can and getting it all back together, she has more guts and courage than most people I know. I have a ton of respect for her in that way.

I shot this portrait of her to portray coming up for air through the bokeh as its the sense I get from her. No quit and aiming up through struggles that would drown most of us. This is just one of the images I took of her the other day and I think it symbolizes what shes going through right now best.

Pepper and her person, Diane, are volunteers with the local hospice. They visit me at home once a week. Pepper's nature is perfectly suited to her role: she is friendly, calm, quiet, sensitive, and compassionate. Example: if she senses that I'm in physical distress, she walks up to me, looks me in the eyes, and starts licking my face. :-) She's a gorgeous animal, and, spiritually speaking, probably an 'old soul'. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to spend time with her.

Once upon a time, there was a powerful goddess named Hades, who ruled over the underworld. Hades was feared by many, for she held the power to judge the souls of the dead and determine their fate in the afterlife. She was often depicted as a dark and mysterious figure, with a stern expression and a commanding presence.

However, Hades was also a complex goddess with many facets to her personality. As a female deity, she brought a different perspective to the role of ruler of the underworld. She had a deep sense of empathy for those who had suffered in life and sought to provide them with a fair and just afterlife. She was also fiercely protective of the souls in her care, and would go to great lengths to ensure their safety and well-being.

One day, a mortal soul named Orpheus arrived at the gates of the underworld, seeking to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the realm of the dead. Hades was moved by Orpheus' devotion and agreed to let him take Eurydice back to the world of the living, on the condition that he not look back at her until they had both reached the surface.

Orpheus agreed to the terms, but in his haste and anxiety, he turned around too soon and saw Eurydice's spirit slip back into the underworld. Devastated, he returned to the world above alone.

Hades watched the scene unfold, her heart heavy with sympathy for the lovers' plight. She saw how Orpheus' grief consumed him, driving him to a state of despair that even she could not heal. In that moment, Hades realized that her power over life and death was not absolute, and that there were some things even she could not control.

From that day forward, Hades vowed to approach her duties with greater compassion and understanding. She recognized that her role as ruler of the underworld was not just about judging souls, but about providing comfort and solace to those who had suffered in life. And though she remained a powerful and imposing figure, Hades also became known for her wisdom, empathy, and the deep well of kindness that lay beneath her stern exterior.

Three Tibetan monks from Namgyal Monastery based in Dharamshala, India are presently working on a Sand Mandala project called “Compassionate Mandala Tour” in celebration of His Holiness receiving the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award of the United States this year. Here in New York City, monks are creating this sand mandala at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, located at 112 Street, Amsterdam Avenue, New York City.

To introduced briefing about the mandala, the creation and destruction of the mandala is a reminder of the profound Buddhist concept of impermanence. Of all the artistic traditions of Buddhism, that ritual of painting with colored sand is one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan, this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means "mandala of colored powders." Formed of a traditional prescribed iconography that includes geometric shapes and a multitude of ancient spiritual symbols, the sand-painted mandala is used as a tool for consecrating the earth and its inhabitants.

There will be The Compassionate Mandala Tour concert at the Synod Hall, The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine on Friday, November 09, 2007 at 07.00 pm. It is a rare opportunity to have a varied Tibetan musical experience featuring Namgyal monks and an exiled Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal. The Namgyal monks will perform their version of traditional Tibetan monastic chanting and will play traditional Tibetan instruments, such as 10-foot long dungchen horns, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpets.

All the proceedings from the concert will goes to the Tibetan Children’s Village School, Dharamshala, India a charitable school for educating and fostering thousands of Tibetan refugee students from Tibet.

This project and the concert is open to the public and if interested, you can get more information from the Cathedral’s official website.

Pour your wisdom all over judge.

Wat Si Phan Ton is known for its beautiful architecture and the use of gold-colored sheet metal to cover the buildings and structures. This gives the temple its distinctive shiny golden appearance, which contributed to its nickname Golden Temple. Buddhist monks live in Wat Si Phan Ton, including the venerable monk Chao Abbot. In Thai temples such as Wat Si Phan Ton, monks perform several roles: Prayer and Meditation, Buddha's Teachings, Community Service, and Almsgiving. Monks may be involved in community service, such as providing spiritual guidance to those in need, attending ceremonial events, and providing moral support. They follow a strict set of precepts and devote their lives to the pursuit of spiritual development, meditation and spreading the Buddha's teachings. Monks spend a significant portion of their time in prayer and meditation. This enables them to achieve inner peace and gain profound insights. Monks can be involved in community service, such as providing spiritual guidance to those in need, attending ceremonial events, and providing moral support. In Buddhism, it is considered virtuous to give food and donations to monks. Monks often enter the community early in the morning to receive alms as a way to promote spiritual connection. Monks lead a simple lifestyle and have minimal material possessions. They wear traditional orange robes and shave their heads as a sign of renunciation of worldly vanity. Wat Si Phan Ton is not only a place of worship, but also a cultural and historical site.

Wat Si Phan Ton is a striking Buddhist temple located in Nan, Thailand, and it is sometimes affectionately referred to as the Golden Temple because of its dazzling golden appearance. At the entrance of the temple you will find two impressive 6-headed statues of golden dragons, which play an important role in the local culture and symbolism. Also called "nagas", these golden dragons are mythical creatures that feature prominently in Southeast Asian mythology and religion. They are often associated with water and fertility and are considered to have protective powers. Nagas can be found in many Buddhist temples and shrines, often in the form of statues, paintings or reliefs. The golden dragons at the entrance of Wat Si Phan Ton in Nan serve as symbols of protection and prosperity for those who visit the temple. Enjoying the warm Thai sun surrounded by the lively street life and the Golden Temple, we decided to cool off at the local ice cream shop. The cheerful ice cream vendor greeted us with a wide smile and offered an array of colorful ice creams ranging from bold tropical flavors to classic refreshers. With the sun warming our skin, we opted for delicious coconut lime ice creams. The ice cream tasted delicious.

HBM! One of five photos taken on my morning walk along the Promenade in our Humber Bay Shores neighbourhood.

The "Great Depression" (1929-1941) was a time of tremendous poverty and suffering. It was also a period in which the arts flourished. Much of that art served to document the devastation of the Depression.

Dorothea Lange (Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn; 1895-1965), often called the "compassionate recorder", used her photographic skills to draw America's attention to the poor and forgotten during the dark days of the Depression. Her stirring images of migrant farmers and the unemployed, while working for the Farm Security Administration, have become universally recognized symbols of the Depression-era.

A "bindlestiff" is characterized as a hobo. Bindlestiffs were in high population during the Great Depression when men who had lost their jobs would hit the road searching for work.

Passolungo, Lev Tostoj

Here is my favorite Tolstoy: when he talks about animals his good soul, intransigent but compassionate, fair rather than intelligent, emerges in full force, "old Tolstoy who is so difficult to love" because without complacency, and so he gets to the bottom, he narrates masterfully the death of the horse, after passionately describing its life. What a miserable figure for men! How superior is the horse!

I'm sharing just a few words to accompany my image today. Have an artful Tuesday, my friends. xo

I'm grateful for the holiday season. It's reminding me to be more compassionate. :)

Original created using turquoise background 1990. This is another version using a background in royal blue. The logo can be seen two ways.

I think Pokey's sad expression says it all; our Darla is not doing well, and we know the end is near. We saw the new vet last night, who was very compassionate. and I'm glad we made the change. I actually thought we may decide to have her euthanized last night, but Carl wasn't mentally prepared to say good-bye to her yet (Darla has always been a "daddy's girl") so the vet suggested one last ditch effort to try to make Darla feel better (we know there is no hope of a cure) We'll be doing subcutaneous fluids to try to help Darla's failing kidneys flush her system. But the vet said that if she doesn't show improvement in a week or two, it will likely be time to let her go. For now, we'll keep her comfortable and give her all the treats she wants since she surprisingly still has a pretty good appetite. It's going to be hard on us all; Pokey and Darla, together, have been such a cornerstone of our furry family for a long time. Although she sleeps so much now, I'm still glad she made it through 12 Months for Dogs 2021.

Onaqui Wild Horse Herd on the historic Pony Express Trail (Simpson Springs Rd) in Rush Valley, Utah.

I am FURIOUS!!! As a taxpayer, as a citizen, and even more so as a compassionate human being. This is a TRAVESTY!!!!!

Sadly, since I took these images in March of 2021, approx 434 of the approx. 475 herd that was on the WHMA (wild horse management area) near Dugway, Utah have been captured in the July 2021 helicopter round-ups and sent to penned areas. One death of a mare was reported so far. But the herds have been decimated and eradicated from their natural range!

If they are lucky (if you can call it that), they will be sent to adoption in October, and a few may find caring owners, but they won’t be free, or wild anymore. Likely kept in small enclosures separated from their bands (family). If they are unlucky they will be adopted through a government program that gives adopters $1000 to keep them for at least a year, then they can sell them to slaughterhouse without any oversight even though they have protected status because no one keeps up with their conditions after the year.

These horses are supposed to be protected under a 1971 law, but BLM (Bureau of Land Management) ignores the laws that protects these wild mustangs, and does whatever the hell they want to without any oversight. This was done so that welfare ranchers can access cheaper land for their cattle and sheep to graze on at $1.35 a head as opposed to $20 a head they pay in places like Texas for grazing rights. These iconic horses are pawns by the meat industry!

This all takes place on public land, and paid for by taxpayers dollars. SHAME on all those that allowed this TRAVESTY to occur!!!

Photo taken when she was resting quietly. She is now resting in peace.

This photo taken not long before the Compassionate Care vet arrived.. Tikki was so weak, and creaky, that it was clear that this was "that time" when the quality of life had gone past a desirable line. (We would fight as long as she wasn’t miserable.) She slept on top of her cat tree and just coming down from there was clearly difficult and uncomfortable for her...

I thought about regular-or-emergency vet (again) and they might well have put her on fluids etc. which might have brought her back to normal-ish for a little while but, based on the last months of vet drop-bys and attention, I think that would have just been an unpleasant episode for her without much success. Compassionate Care vet also noticed that when she was resting there, she was altering position (slightly) quite frequently and noted this was often a sign of pain... sigh...
