This 45,000-square-foot facility is designed to accommodate Butler University's Department of Telecommunication Arts as well as three other related departments: Computer Science, Communication Studies and Journalism. It houses a recording studio and the on-campus home for WTBU, a fully functioning public television station. The building has two faces, one that blends with the existing campus limestone vernacular and an open face of two-story, floor-to-ceiling glass that offers a dramatic river view.

My mom used to tell me (Jess) stories about how when I was little and we
would drive over the hill into the city I was always fascinated by the
pattern of all the lights on all the various city buildings. I guess I am
still drawn to the pattern of the lights as I look out the studio window to
the lights of Montreal at night.
I thought of this photograph when look the photograph of a person walking
down what I assume to be a Montreal street at night. The lights in the
distance suggest to me the life of the city. This person is immersed in the
nightlife, while I was up looking down upon it when I took my photograph.

The textbook focuses on the power of communication and its ability to lead students to become mathematically literate. Similar to the idea that the newspaper keeps people informed and knowledgable with day-to-day events, the frequent exchange of information about math content increases students understanding and comfortability with the material. One of the chapters emphasizes the idea of creating a community of mathematical learners. A strong community of mathematical learners offers multiple benefits, such as encouraging students to not only understand the elements of math but be able to interpret, critic and explain themselves through mathematics. The information presented in newspapers spur readers to develop their own arguments and communicate about issues and events happening locally and around the world. The same spark of communication can be accomplished with math material.
