Somewhere between Toba (鳥羽)and Ise(伊勢)

The "keitai" (携帯; mobile phone) is certainly THE dominant life-style item of the present. Everybody has one (or several). Contrary to Europe (or at least Vienna), talking on the phone on the train and subway is strictly forbidden in Japan (and this ban is largely observed - the mutual control mechanism is still working very well). But the keitai is not just a "mobile phone" anyway, but rather a multi-media gadget for e-mail, internet, TV, games (and probably many things I would not even dream of). Some ten years ago, still most people on trains were reading magazines or newspapers - today, the vast majority is twiddling the keitai (would be interesting to know whether the keitai had negative effects on the newspaper, and especially manga business).

Thinking about how curtains might be part of a communicative wall in the home. The idea is to have layered curtains whose colors change into combinations that have a predetermined significance (Weather forecast? Energy use? Fan mail from some flounder?), or just spontaneously as an artwork. The point being that most of our communication systems are disruptive to normal conversation and something literally in the background -- but always at least in one's peripheral vision -- might make life more pleasant.

THE SHAPE OF S.U.C.C.E.S.

An enlightening model that I've used and has been used in delivering workshops, in marketing and advertising and with communications experts is called The Shape of S.U.C.C.E.S. All effective messages are shaped by being:

Straightforward

Unexpected & Surprise

Credible

Concrete

Emotional

Stories

At the heart of Mind Magic lies the potent combination of the unexpected and surprising. Every trick we teach you revolves around you performing the impossible. Mind Magic, in line with the current trend of placing a high value on Personal Touch, allows you to engage with people through using face-to-face and physical means, providing a very real and concrete experience for them. Doing this lets you tell stories, leverage emotions, establish yourself as credible and put your message across in a straightforward, interesting and entertaining manner.

YOU IN YOUR FUTURE

The future is neither completely predictable nor enitrely random, but your future is in your hands. The future of presenting, training, teaching, communicating, creative thinking and business is based on the shattering of traditions and built upon the shards of what remains. To do this, novelty, innovation, imagination and the ability to embrace what is truly different is what's needed. Novelty is the key, and for many people who have previously attended the Sleight of Mind Set workshops, they have certainly found a source of it. This leads us to ask three significant questions;

What's your source of surprise?

How do you 'rock the boat'?

Where do you get unexpected influences from?

The coming together of these three answers will dictate how well prepared you are for the future. Mind Magic certainly acts to generate a blend of what's new, what's a positive force of disruption and what can be a fountain of extraordinary influences.

USING YOUR ILLUSIONS

Over the past 2 years, I have been running courses around the U.K. and found that a number of people from a wide range of background, including teachers, therapists, coaches, business leaders, scientists, trainers etc. have found Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry to help:

engage with audiences

a source of fresh ideas for business and delivery

add to presenting abilities and skills

understanding psychological illusions

add mystery and the unexpected to dry presentations

create emotional connections

add visual impact and vitality

use personal touch

create extraordinary moments

show the power of perspective

unleashing creative forces

reframing ideas

fuels imagination

In his astonishing TED talk, Beau Lotto demonstrates the power of visual illusions to the world. By combining the fascinating effect that illusions have on an audience with meaningful demonstrations of how these can be used to change the world and create beautiful pieces of art, Lotto also explores why we can't believe what we see, but we see what we believe.

To sum up his message and why illusions hold such meaning for us, he says: "The brain didn't evolve to see the world as it is. We can't. Instead, the brain has evolved to see the world the way it was useful to see it in the past." By this he means that we do not experience what is really going on outside of our heads, but we experience what we have learned expect. To see this video and others which explore this fascinating subject, please go to www.mindsways.com/SMS/#PsychologicalArtistry

THE POWER OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY

The approach we take is what we call Psychological Artistry and involves using a blend of psychology, mind magic (or mentalism), personal development and smart thinking ideas. By tapping into people's imagination, curiosity and desire for mystery we can engage people in all different areas. By adding in psychological approaches, this is strengthened. I appreciate that by its very nature, it is not a traditional approach but that is where its power lies.

Psychological Artistry is about combining the world of art and psychology. It's about showing the beautiful flaws in our thinking and how we can use them. It's about magnifying how we all think and giving you the opportunity to change it. A couple of interesting examples the McGurk effect and Prof Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect". These illustrate both the power and the approach of psychological artistry. I would love to know what you think.

Please see www.mindsways.com/SMS for these and other incredible videos. For more about Psyhcological Artistry and our approach, please see www.mindsways.com/about/

BRAND NEW BESPOKE EVENTS

We are now offering a number of bespoke events that can take place in-house or during conferences, meetings or during organisational change. These range from Talks, Performances and Workshops.

This is illustrated through an entertaining and enlightening combination of illusions, Psychological Artistry, magic tricks and moments of mystery.

Entertainment that both opens the mind and bedazzles it, Mindsways' performances are always unique, memorable and a powerful source of inspiration for staff and team members. With the flexibility to include your message (previous performances have been based on "Language & Beliefs" and "Creating Impact"), these unforgettable set of events can be used to support, enhance and make your meeting in to the event of the year.

The workshops can be half days or full days, even a series of recurring days depending on your needs. Regardless of their format, they will always provide fascinating insights and breath-taking mystery, wrapped up in your metaphors and learning points.

Something struck me as I was looking through these pics again... neither the earlier pic nor this was "pre planned". When I asked them to "pose", they both struck the same pose at the same time.

Perhaps it's because they're twins. Even when they were young, Mat, who learnt to talk first, could always tell us what Tim wanted, even when we had no clue.

But for the sceptics... here's video evidence that twins do communicate... enjoy :-)
