Communication Design_Poster
Size; 420mm × 594mm
Subject; Come back, Korean style house
Design; Transformer
Hanok is a traditional house of Korea. Its greatness in size and elaborately ornamented features does not make it quite the perfect or ideal type of house in a modernized Korean cultural environment. This became the reason for the fall of hanok’s popularity. However, mini-hanok’s have started to arise. Most
of these mini-hanok’s are about 50m2 in size and are of interest to many newly-wed couples. It’s exterior closely resembles the traditional kind of hanok while the interior is designed to suit the modern lifestyle.
This poster was designed as a means to promote that ‘Hanok is back, in style’. The Chinese character meaning ‘hope’ when used twice is said to bring happiness and luck. As Korea’s cultural influence come from China, this belief still remains within Korean culture and hence the use of Chinese character for hope can often be seen in Korean traditional patterns, including on the walls of hanok. This is where I got the idea to use the character ‘hope’ for my poster.
There has been much shift in the design of Korean-style houses (Hanok). Today’s hanok have shifted from the spacious and ornately decorated type to being smaller and cozy. I thought that a good way to introduce the hanok’s change was by comparing the old hanok to the new kind. The comparison was achieved by expressing the word ‘hope’ on the right as an image of an antique hanok. Wadang, a traditional pattern, was used to illustrate the splendor of the hanok. The word ‘hope’ on the left was broken down to portray a cozy and smaller version of hanok.
As I was editing this photo from the Black Hills Photo Shootout this past September one word came to mind, "communication".
This cowgirl and her horse are communicating. She is holdng the bridle, and looking down at her horse. The horse, feeling the gentle pull of the bridle, knows to stand still. Both horsee and woman are relaxed because they know how to communicate, and what is being communicated. Her outfit, carefully chosen, communicates who and what she is. Even the background communicates ~ the old homestead conveys the message that this is the west.
You and I are communicating by the words I choose to write, and the image that is being displayed. The choice of monochrome, as opposed to color, is a means of communication as well. Communication happens whenever someone views the photograph.
Here is the thing, though ~ communication often gets garbled. The message that we intend to send is not the message received by others. We assume things, and those assumptions may very well be in error. The assumption confuses the communication.
May God grant us the grace to communicate well, and to listen and seek to understand what is being communicated to us by others.
How strange the silence of this structure that carries so much noise so far.
I found solitude under it's towering presence.
