The Adélie Penguin is a species of penguin common along the entire Antarctic coast, which is their only residence. They are among the most southerly distributed of all seabirds, as are the Emperor Penguin, the South Polar Skua, the Wilson's Storm Petrel, the Snow Petrel, and the Antarctic Petrel. In 1840, French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville named them for his wife, Adélie. There are estimated to be a total of 2.4-3.2 million breeding pairs of Adélie penguins; they are distributed around the coastline of the Antarctic continent.

The Exploring Earth Science Teacher Workshop 2017 took place over August 2nd and 3rd. Participating teachers spent two days in Shenandoah National Park learning and participating in activities around the theme "Shenandoah Salamander: Climate Change Casualty or Survivor."

This program is supported by a generous donation from the Shenandoah National Park Association and the Shenandoah National Park Trust.

Capitol Climate Action Activists wear dust masks as they march to the Capitol Power Plant in Washington, DC, March 2, 2009. More than 2,500 former coal miners, ministers, mothers, students, and climate activists, representing over 40 states from Arizona to Appalachia, successfully blocked all five entrances to the Capitol Power Plant for nearly four hours today, forming the largest display of civil disobedience on the climate crisis in U.S. history.

The Cerro Dominador solar power plant produces 110 MW, which are directly connected to the National Electric System. The plant is located in the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, which has the highest levels of direct solar radiation on the planet. In the Cerro Dominador solar power plant, the solar energy is reflected by 10,600 heliostats (mirrors) to the top of a 250-meter-high tower, where liquid salts are heated; the hot salts then help to generate steam, which in contact with an electric generation turbine produces the final energy. The main characteristic of the solar thermal plant is that, unlike photovoltaic, it solves the problem of intermittency, being able to produce energy during 17 hours without the presence of the sun and maintaining the production of 110 MW even at night. The concentric layout of the plant covers an area of more than 700 hectares (7 square kilometers), with a diameter of 3 kilometers.

Back from 10 days of snow & cold in the good ol' UK. Out of my many times there, I can't believe it's still snowing in end Mar/Apr! Coldest March in 50 years O_O

In any case, it was still wonderful being back, catching up with work & friends :)

COP21 - Paris

I'm travelling this week but, as somebody with a Christian Brothers education (very good, in fairness...), allow me to leave you with two perspectives on the recent Ryan Report that has caused much angst and hand-wringing throughout Ireland:

"A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from... Acute and chronic contact and non-contact sexual abuse was reported... Sexual abuse was endemic in boys’ institutions... "

Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse ('Ryan Report'), 20 May 2009

"The congregation totally rejects any allegations of systemic abuse having taken place... [and] vehemently repudiates all unsubstantiated allegations of sexual abuse...”

People vs. Fossil Fuels - climate protest by the White House, 10/14/21

In Dominican Republic hundreds of people in white gathered to raise their

voices and commitment to the climate crisis. The message conveyed was the

threat of sea level rise to an island nation as Dominican Republic and was

part of one of the 350 EARTH events happening worldwide, a week before the

climate negotiations. This day, November 21st, will always be remembered as

the day that Dominicans came together for Planet Earth, our only home.

The biogas-project in the rural community of Badreni at the edge of the Chitwan National park has triple effect: for climate, forest and health. Through the Terai Arc Landscape Programme, WWF-Nepal encourages installation of biogas systems by giving information and advice, and finances a part of the cost, especially for the construction of toilets and linking them to biogas plants. The total cost for an average sized biogas plant is 20,000 Nepali rupees (US$280). Biogas is produced from cattle manure and toilet waste. Each household can produce their own biogas by installing a toilet-attached biogas plant. The technology is simple: the manure and toilet waste are mixed with water and dumped in an airtight underground pit of about 6 cubic metres. In these anaerobic conditions, methane starts forming and it is led via a narrow pipe into the gas stove in the kitchen. A valve is turned on whenever the gas is needed for cooking. The gas in itself is pure methane, clean and odourless. It burns more effectively than wood, increasing the efficiency of cooking.

"If you were smarter, we'd be in school"

There isn't currently absolute certainty about how big a problem climate change is. But we could make an attempt at putting some numbers to it...

Risk-based problems like this pose fundamental questions to our society: how big do you make your solution?

What do we do in other areas like health, security and energy?
