A Jewish cemetery has wonderful, often elaborately ornamented gravestones. Especially those of the 19th century better-to-do deceased are very large with lots of symbolism. Here you can see the Levite pitcher. However, the symbol for a Levite can also be an ewer or a bowl. The Levites are the male descendants of the tribe of Levi. Levi was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (also called Israel). While the Kohanim (Sons of Aaron, symbol: hands) are the priestly class, the Levites who are not a Kohen have other rights and responsibilities. In the temple of Jerusalem, they were responsible for guarding as well as ritual cleanliness. They were the ones who washed the hands of the Kohen before he gave his blessing to the offerings. Hence, the pitcher, ewer or bowl. Notice also the grapes to the left and right, indicating that the deceased led a good, prosperous life.

Please remember:

Politicians and monarchs have the power to make war,

but we, the people, have the power to make peace.

Shackled and bound by the sound of your voice

With the silver moon

Hanging in the sky

Taking hold of the hem of your dress

Cleanliness only comes in small doses

Bodily whole but my head's in a mess

Fuelling obsession that borders psychosis

It's a sad disease

Creeping through my mind

Getting lost in the folds of your skirt

There's a price that I pay for my mission

A body in heaven and a mind full of dirt

How I suffer the sweetest condition

Through the course of observing these Orb Weavers, I am struck at just how meticulous and careful they are in regards to maintenance and cleanliness. They will spend hours preening, maintaining, cleaning and repairing their webs, over and over again. Here a Female Orb Weaver consumes the silk that has become too damaged to be used; also to recoup the energy they expel in creating it; essentially licking the plate. They are, if anything, absolutely efficient via design for what they do.

The city of Oxnard is home to over 20 miles (32 km) of scenic, relatively uncrowded coastline. The beaches in Oxnard are large and the sand is exceptionally soft. The sand dunes in Oxnard, which were once much more extensive, have been used to recreate Middle-Eastern desert dunes in many movies, the first being The Sheik with Rudolph Valentino. There are very few rocks or driftwood piles at most beaches, but Oxnard is known to have dangerous rip-currents at certain beaches. Oxnard is home to world-class surf at most of its beaches.

Oxnard's Beaches extend for 5 miles along the city's oceanfront, from Mandalay Beach in the north to Silver Strand Beach in the south. The continuous stretch of sand is only interrupted by the mouth of Channel Islands Harbor. The beaches are known for their sunshine, mild surf, cleanliness and easy access.

"Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.

The Philosophy of Tea is not mere aestheticism in the ordinary acceptance of the term, for it expresses conjointly with ethics and religion our whole point of view about man and nature. It is hygiene, for it enforces cleanliness; it is economics, for it shows comfort in simplicity rather than in the complex and costly; it is moral geometry, in as much as it defines our sense of proportion to the universe."

Meet a Guérande farmer

A profession - A passion

For centuries, salt workers have been the heirs and guardians of a unique heritage. To be a salt worker is to be a bit of a magician: extract the grain of salt from the drop of water.

The trade of salt worker is one of the rare agricultural professions which uses a technique free from mechanization and the addition of chemicals.

This artisanal production technique allows both to produce quality salt and to preserve an exceptional site.

A passion throughout the seasons

If the salt is harvested in summer, the harvest is prepared in winter and the proper functioning of a saltworks requires work throughout the year: alone or collectively, the salt worker adapts his work to the rhythm of the seasons.

WINTER

To protect the saltworks from frost and bad weather, the salt worker covers them with water. This season is entirely devoted to the cleaning (raking) of mudflats, to the maintenance of the embankments (reinforcement, cutting of vegetation) and to the cleaning of the supply and evacuation channels as well as any repairs necessary in the event of damage. that occurred during storms.

SPRING

At the beginning of March, it is necessary to empty (algir) the saltworks and the basins of the accumulated rainwater, then to evacuate the silt and the algae of each basin while reconstituting the clay dikes (bridges) which constitute the hydraulic circuit of the saline. It is also the time of collective work to complete repair (footwear), every 25 years, of a group of carnations (lotie).

SUMMER

This is the harvest of salt. 50 to 60 carnations are on average exploited by a salt worker (which represents an area of 3 to 4 ha) and requires long working days. Production is however highly variable depending on the amount of sunshine, winds and rainfall.

AUTUMN

Once the salt is "rolled", that is to say, put away for the winter, the pace of work slows down until mid-November. A period of rest which can however be interrupted in the event of a high tide to protect the saltworks.

In Guérande, a salt worker operator alone produces between 60 and 90 tonnes of coarse salt and 2 to 3 tonnes of fleur de sel per year! But this harvest varies considerably depending on weather conditions (from 0 to 200 tonnes of coarse salt)!

Salt worker tools

The tools used in the salt marshes have changed little over the centuries and have remained, for the most part, in wood.

THE LAS

With a long flexible handle 5 meters long, this tool is the best known. It is used to harvest coarse salt.

SALT FLOWER LOUSSE

Historically made of wood, the fleur de sel lousse is used to pick the fleur de sel from the surface of carnations. There are now more elaborate pouches made from modern, lighter food grade materials.

WHEELBARROW

It is used to transport the salt from the ladures to the trémet. At the very beginning of the 1950s, it replaced the gède, a wooden container that women carried balanced on their heads with a cushion of rolled-up canvas, the torch. Wheelbarrows can contain 120 to 150Kg of salt.

THE LOUSSE TO PONTE

The wooden pontoon lousse, comparable to the fleur de sel lousse, is distinguished by a shorter and larger handle. It is used for the annual repair of bridges.

THE RAKE IN LIMU

It is used to rake limu, an algae that grows in swamps.

THE CESSE (WOODEN)

The ceasefire is a large handheld scoop that is used to empty the water or throw in the mud.

LA BOYETTE (OR HOULETTE) (IN SHEET STEEL)

It is the salt worker shovel used for some maintenance work in salt marshes.

THE BOUTOUÉ (WOODEN)

Similar in shape to that of las, it is used to repel the mud from the eyeshadows and in the eyelets before harvesting, in order to ensure a great cleanliness of the funds.

A visit to the South-East just had to include a trip to Hastings to enjoy the semaphores still in use at the eastern end of the station.

Unfortunately the tall platform lamps created a few problems finding a relatively clear view, so this shot needed some manoeuvring to try minimise their impact. Eventually I found a spot that mostly avoided them imposing on the signals and, for the signal box, strategically 'placed' one to cover the corner where I thought it would do less visual harm.

The result isn't perfect but it's as good as I could get encompassing the wider view. Gracing the scene is Southern's 'Turbostar' diesel-unit no. 171402 arriving with the 11.25am Ashford International - Eastbourne service (2D23).

The day was warm and, with the door to the cabin open, it was a real pleasure hearing the usual signal box noises once again. Note the mop placed against the railings too - I'm betting that, like generations of Signallers before him, there would be a pride taken in the cleanliness of the place and you'd likely be able to eat your dinner off the floor.

Getting behind with comments so turned them off for this one.
