Here’s another in my occasional series on books and book things – this time celebrating the joy of listening to classical music in the 1950s.
I first encountered the author, Martyn Goff, when I was a 14-year-old schoolboy. He owned The Ibis Bookshop in Banstead High Street, Surrey, which I visited from time to time.
To me, Goff was already a bit of a celebrity, thanks to this book – A Short Guide to Long Play which he displayed in the shop window in 1957. And inside, he had a record player on which he always played soothing classical music. The sub-title of the book is ‘How to listen to Music on and off the Record’, and the price is 7s 6d.
While in Banstead, Martyn Goff was to become much more of a celebrity when he published several novels, including The Plaster Fabric and The Youngest Director, dealing with homosexual relations, a matter barely spoken of in the 1950s when such activities were illegal and ‘permissiveness’ was 20 years away.
But back to the book in question here. It reads like a long lecture, but in the nicest sense, with lots of amusing asides. Martyn Goff discusses the differences between listening to long-playing records (remember them?) on a ‘Hi-Fi set-up, a ‘pre-war radiogram’ and an ‘E.A.R. portable, electric, 3-speed gramophone’. ‘When I bought mine’ he recalls, ‘the cost was 26 guineas. Purchase Tax increases have raised this figure to 28½ guineas and at the present rate of rising costs, it may be double that figure by the time these words are read.’ Sounds familiar…?
The book is a time-warp, but Goff also discusses in some detail the symphony, the overture, popular composers and many other subjects, all crammed into 125 pages. It’s knowledgeable stuff.
In due course Martyn Goff CBE became not only a well-known reviewer and broadcaster, but also chairman of the National Book League, Administrator of the Booker Prize (a position he held for 36 years) and chairman of Sotheran’s, Europe’s oldest antique and rare book dealer founded in 1761. The bookseller from Banstead became known as ‘the eminence grise of British publishing’ – and his rise and rise to the top of the literary tree all started in my home town.

Ellen (9) is one of my piano pupils, and wanted a blue house with a Classical interior (her words!!). Walls decorated with 5p coins and a button.
This magnificent mosaic of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Enthroned dates from the 12th Century (1140-43).
On either side are saints and popes. On the right side are Saint Peter (nearest Christ) and Popes Cornelius, Julius I, and Calepodius. To the left are Pope Innocent II (not visible here), Saint Lawrence and Pope Calixtus (nearest Mary).
Directly above Christ, the Hand of God reaches down.
The style appears to be Byzantine, but with more a more natural or classical touch.

Seacombe Ferry and omnibus terminus was constructed between 1930-3 to designed by L St G Wilkinson, the Wallasey Borough Surveyor for the municipally owned Wallasey Ferries and Corporation Motors. These were incorporated into the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive (MPTE) in 1969 with the combined Birkenhead and Wallasey Ferries being rebranded as Mersey Ferries. Following bus deregulation The MPTE became Merseytravel.
Comprises brick with Portland stone dressings; tiled roofs. Two ranges, one of a single story parallel to the Mersey containing booking and entrance halls, the other returning, of two storeys, containing waiting rooms, workshops and offices which are now being repurpsed as the Eureka Science attraction due to open in 2023.
Both ranges connected by a loggia (defining two sides of a courtyard bus station), supported by paired Doric columns. The riverside range with deep hipped roof and monumental central clock tower, the latter slightly tapering to upper courses, the clock faces over ventilation slits contained within superordinate arches, the stepped plinth, with stripped classical detailing, of stone; all this over a broken pedimented projecting entrance block (all stone) with tall round-headed arch.
Loggia of 3-bays to either side with clerestory windows containing iron chevron- patterned glazing bars. The return range of eleven bays, similarly fenestrated to both ground and 1st floors, with doors treated in the same manner. Outer bays with overhanging eaves; central bays with stepped parapets surmounted by urns and central flagstaff over municipal coat of arms.
Contemporary fittings include bronze lamps. Interior: hall with massive unadorned round-headed arches of three orders (to front range); tie-rod roof; part-glazed.
Several contemporary features include ticket offices with chevron and other art-deco style glazing patterns. A fine restrained composition in the simplified classical style popular at the time. Historical note: the first commercial shore- based Radar station in the world for the navigation of ships was installed at the Seacombe Terminal buildings in 1947.

"Serenade" is a ballet by George Balanchine (1904-1983), created in 1934, set to music by Peter Tchaikovsky (Serenade for Strings). Rightfully considered one of the classics of the 20th century, it is danced to this day by companies worldwide.

The St. Pierre Cathedral is a cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland, today belonging to the Reformed Protestant Church of Geneva. It is known as the adopted home church of John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Inside the church is a wooden chair used by Calvin.
It was begun under Arducius de Faucigny, the prince-bishop of the Diocese of Geneva, around 1160. It was originally built in Romanesque style and was completed a hundred years later in Gothic style. A Neo-Classical main facade was added in the 18th century.
The area beneath the Cathedral has recently been excavated extensively, revealing a history of the site dating back to the time of the Roman Empire.[citation needed] From the 8th to 10th centuries it was one of three cathedrals to coexist on the site. The present building has grown from a cathedral devoted to ecclesiastical use and an early Christian funerary cult; the other two structures, subsumed in the 12th century by the growth of the surviving building, were apparently for different uses, one for public sacraments and the other for church teachings.
The German painter Konrad Witz painted an altarpiece, the so-called St. Peter Altarpiece, for the Cathedral in 1444, now in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, which contains his composition, the Miraculous Draught of Fishes.
Currently, every summer a German Protestant minister is present, making it possible to hold bilingual services and meetings of both German and French Protestant worshippers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Pierre_Cathedral

The temple was built in Tang Dynasty. After six times of fire, sixteen times of enlargement and repair in Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was built to be today’s size in 1882 AD (the eighth year of Guangxu Emperor, Qing Dynasty). It covers an area of 9,8000 square meters. The temple is of nine layers and four courtyards. It consists of Jiuxing Door, Kuixing Pavilion, Yubei Pavilion, Jiaying Door, Yushu House, Main Hall, Bedroom, east and west side doors and four turrets. The Main Hall is the main body of the building, with the largest scale, which is also called Big Hall or Shengdi Hall. It is 24 meters high, with 72 stone stelae, symbolizing the 72 peaks of Southern Sacred Mountain. The wood carving of jumping dragon and flying phoenix under the eaves and the wood carving on the door are very delicate.

Out of the three subtypes of the C56 family, .22 had both front and middle doors being single leaf ones, opening outwards like on coaches.
This allowed for cramming in a few more seats, making this subtype more ideal for long-distance routes. More than a hundred of these .22 variants were built between 1999 and 2002, some with Rába D10, but most of them with Detroit Diesel engines.
Most of them are still in active service; on this image, Eger's HHG-117 plated pure white C56.22 is balancing between the potholes near Egercsehi, on its way to Bélapátfalva.
Like with most of Agria Volán's fleet, it used to sport a lovely blue-white livery before the Volánbusz-era came along with the "make it pure white or pure yellow, we can't decide either" brand statement.
