Mongolská step, široké pláně s mozaikou zelených a suchých travin a klikatící se řeka Kharaa gol tvoří kulisu pro dlouhý kontejnerový vlak, který 8. června 2025 projíždí mezi stanicemi Nomgon a Bayangol. V čele soupravy, která míří z Ruska přes Ulaanbaatar a dále nejspíše do Číny, se nachází dvojička - mohutná dieselelektrická lokomotiva 2TE116UM-002, jejichž modro-modré zbarvení s červenými proužky na čele krásně kontrastuje s pastelovými odstíny okolní krajiny.
Vlak převáží desítky kontejnerů, které se stává součástí důležitého logistického řetězce na trase mezi Evropou a Asií. V této oblasti Transmongolské magistrály je železnice jednou z mála životních tepen, která spojuje rozlehlé, téměř liduprázdné mongolské stepi s ekonomikami velmocí na severu a jihu.
Řeka Kharaa gol, klidně se vinoucí širokým údolím v pozadí snímku, je jedním z mála zdrojů vody pro místní pastviny. Nádherná scenérie podtrhuje kontrast mezi tradičním způsobem života nomádů a moderní nákladní dopravou, která se díky mohutným lokomotivám 2TE116UM a dalším může spolehlivě přesouvat i přes dlouhé úseky bez civilizace. Přesně tyto obrazy dokazují jedinečnost mongolské krajiny, kde čas jako by plynul jinak, zatímco nekonečné nákladní vlaky symbolizují rychle se měnící svět.

Nákladní vlak společnosti FCAB číslo 1212, míří z dolu Spence do přístavu Mejillones. Vlak v čele se stoji 3204 a 3206 je zachycen na severní větvi Prat - Pampa, kde tvoří železniční trať v poušti četné množství oblouků a horských průsmyků v jehož čele stojí vrchol Cumbre. Dlouhý vlak je možné zachytit i v obloucích či smyčkách tak, že je na konci vlaku viditelný postrk, v tomto případě se jedná o lokomotivu 3208. Ložené vlaky z dolu Spence jezdí v čele s dvojicí lokomotiv, na postrku jim vypomáhá samostatný stroj. Naopak prázdné soupravy z přístavu Mejillones jsou vedeny už pouze dvojicí lokomotiv stejné řady.
Tento vlak je nejdelším vlakem na sítí společnosti FCAB a jeho délka může dosáhnout 700 až 800 metrů. Kontejnery jsou ložené vytěženými minerály a k přepravě tohoto těžkého nákladu jsou použité lokomotivy řady 32xx - typu GT42AC s výkonem 3200 koní. Lokomotivy řady 32xx pochází od firmy Progress Rail Services Corporation, vlastněná firmou Caterpillar. Lokomotivy mají označení výrobce EMD GT 42AC a v Chile se jim přezdívá podle firmy, která je vyrobila „Progress“. Jedná se o mladé lokomotivy 3204 a 3206 vyrobené v roce 2018 a na postrku jen o rok starší stroj 3208. Celkem má FCAB ve flotile 14 těchto lokomotiv. Lokomotivy mají 12 válcový motor s označením 12-710, lokomotiva je 20,3 metrů dlouhá, její maximální rychlost je 100 km/h, a pojme 5000 litrů paliva, její váha je 120 tun, tažná síla lokomotivy se uvádí 3 207 kW.
Důl Spence se nachází nedaleko městečka Sierra Gorda jižně pod Calamou v nadmořské výšce 1750 metrů nad mořem, jedná se o povrchový důl, kde se těží měděné katody teprve od roku 2007 (výstavba dolu započala v roce 1996). Katody se získávají bakteriálním procesem louhování a extrakcí v rozpouštědlech, převážně kyseliny sírové, která se sem též vozí na vlacích. Koncentrát se přepravuje ve vozech mokrý a během cesty se zhutňuje, což zamezuje jeho výbuchu. Na jednom voze může být naloženo až 52 tun nákladu. Denně dojde v dole ke zpracování 95 000 až 100 000 tun koncentrátů. Roční objem těžby mědi dělá přibližně 835 tisíc tun, zanedbatelná není ani těžba molybdenu, kterého se zde vytěží 7,5 tisíce tun. Převážný odběr surovin potuje po oceánu do Číny, Spojených státu Amerických a Itálie.

Už od roku 2018 vozí dopravca CarboRail cisternové vlaky trasované zo stanice Bratislava Východ do stanice Sajószentpéter (HU) pre chemičku Borsodchem MCHZ. Jedná sa najmä o súpravy ložené anilínom, a toluéndiizokyanátom. Jedná sa o čísla vlakov Pn 58301 a Pn 53800.
Na fotke vezú 742.505, ktorá je prenajatá od Českej spoločnosti Ostravská dopravní společnost (ODOS) a 742.213 patriacia CarboRailu, prázdnu súpravu po vykládke anilínu. I keď na Slovensku sú tieto vlaky trasované len v úseku Bratislava Východ - Lenartovce, tak skutočná východisková alebo cieľová stanica cisterien je až v stanici Antwerpen Noord v Belgicku, kde sa anilín prečerpáva
z lodí ktoré tam prichádzajú až z Číny, rovnako je to tak aj v prípade toluéndiizokyanátu ktorý sa taktiež vozí do prístavu v Belgických Antwerpách a ďalej prečerpáva na lode. Od začiatku tieto vlaky vozil dopravca Carborail (CRR) s prenajatými rušňami radu 742 od
Českej spoločnosti Ostravská dopravní společnost (ODOS) no v roku 2020 tento dopravca zanikol, keďže ho kúpil nemecký vagónový gigant VTG Rail Logistics. No aj naďalej sa tu vyskytujú rušne 742 od spoločnosti ODOS. Od roku 2021 im asistuje aj prenajatý herkules lízingovej spoločnosti Beacon rail 223.011.

Since 2018, tank trains operated by CarboRail routed from the Bratislava Východ station to the Sajószentpéter (HU) station have been running for the Borsodchem MCHZ chemical plant. These are mainly sets loaded with aniline and toluene diisocyanate.
These are train numbers Pn 58301 and Pn 53800. The photo shows 742.505 leased Czech company Ostravská dopravní společnost (ODOS), and 742.213 owned by CarboRail, from an empty wagons after unloading aniline. Although in Slovakia these trains are routed only in the section Bratislava Východ - Lenartovce, but the real origin or destination station
of the tanks is at the station Antwerpen Noord in Belgium, where the aniline is pumped from ships which they come there from China, as is the case with toluene diisocyanate, which is also transported to the port of Antwerp in Belgium and pumped to ships.
From the beginning, these trains were carried by the carrier Carborail (CRR) with leased locomotives series 742 from the Czech company Ostravská dopravní společnost (ODOS), but in 2020 this carrier didn't exist as it was bought by the German wagon giant

SK: Bola to veľká sláva, keď dňa 27.4.2018 dorazil do kontajnerového terminálu Wien-Süd prvý vlak z Číny. Jednalo sa o spojenie Chengdu - Viedeň. Vlak bol ložený 44 kontajnermi plnými elektroniky. Privítať ho prišiel dokonca sám vtedajší spolkový prezident Van der Bellen. Pri tejto príležitosti bol polepený aj Herkules 2016.001, ktorého jeden bok zdobí veľký čínsky drak a textový odkaz na túto udalosť. O pár dní to bude 5 rokov od tejto udalosti a polep na rušni stále nezmizol. V sobotu 22.4.2023 tento rušeň pendloval na vlakoch Viedeň - Bratislava a konečne som aj ja mal možnosť si ,,draka”, ako sa familiárne tento Herkules v Bratislave nazýva vyfotiť.
EN: It was a great celebration when the first train from China arrived at the Wien-Süd container terminal on 27.4.2018. It was the Chengdu - Vienna connection. The train was loaded with 44 containers full of electronics. It was even welcomed by the then Federal President Van der Bellen himself. The Hercules 2016.001, one side of which is decorated with a large Chinese dragon and a textual reference to the event, was also plastered on the occasion. In a few days it will be 5 years since this event and the sticker on the locomotive still hasn't disappeared. On Saturday 22.4.2023 this locomotive was travelling on the trains Vienna - Bratislava and finally I also had the opportunity to take a picture of the "dragon", as this Hercules is familiarly called in Bratislava.
CZ: Na předměstí Havany byl dne 11. listopadu 2022 zachycen rychlík Tren 13 v relaci La Habana - Guantanamo v čele s lokomotivou DF7G-C 52578, která byla dodána z Číny společností CRRC v roce 2010. Relace do města Guantanamo je vůbec nejdelší na Kubě, pro překonání 915 km dlouhé cesty vlak potřebuje více než 19 hodin. Na snímku se nachází nákladové nádraží La Coubre, odkud odjíždí dálkové rychlíky do východních provincií ostrova. Děje se tak od roku 2015, kdy bylo hlavní nádraží Estacion central uzavřeno z důvodu rekonstrukce. Od června 2022 se stanice prozatím otevřela pouze pro příjezd vlaků, které na hlavní nádraží přijíždí po mostě nad vlakem. Celkovou kubánskou atmosféru dokresluje automobil Chevrolet z 50. let 20. století.

Ty zoufalý činy, ta pošetilost první poloviny prosince. Fotíme úplně banální věci, který jsme měli roky, nebo aspoň měsíce přímo pod nosem, ale nějak nebyl čas. Jako když lidi na smrtelný posteli zapomenou na svojí celoživotní mrzutost a snaží se odčinit, napravit...
Normálně taky nevstávám v pět ráno. Teď ale jo: sbalit věci, nezapomenout stativ a hurá na nádraží. Dneska pojedeme do Prahy vlakem, trochu dřív a dáme si zastávku v Ústí. Protože už pozítří bude tohle minulost.
Je něco po sedmé ráno a pod Větruší pobrumlává liberecký brejlák (no dobře, ještě nedávno trutnovský) 750.160. Alternátor se snaží prohřát ty tři prochladlé vagony prvního ranního rychlíku do Liberce, holt to dneska přitáhli z nocoviště na západním nádraží fakt na poslední chvíli. Tohle už nadobro končí: brejle sice tady část výkonů ještě uhájí, ale už se budou na noc vracet domů. Tak adieu, GVD 2009.

Another great water drop artist is ‘IR Ciny Jim’ we started posting collision photos on flickr around the same sort of time, however his work has moved on so much since his first few photos, he has also proved to be a very helpful and has always offered me good advice.... so thank you Jim!
Waterdrop photography is a strange art, when I first tried capturing water in motion at end of 2010 I was happy to get anything, a crown, splash or column etc; but after building a rig and designing some electronics the challenge isn’t capturing a collision it’s getting the rest of the image perfect.
Having the right lighting, background and contrast in colours will make or break a waterdrop sculpture; it’s almost like choosing the right wrapping paper and ribbon to finish off that great present that you’ve brought, and this is sort of where I’m at the moment, my lighting needs more tweaking but I’ve got a few ideas and I’m looking forward to trying them out!
A slightly abstract choice for the title but the colours kind of reminded me of two sports teams about to do battle.
This was taken a few weeks ago and I’ve been a little too busy to go through the results of that session to see if there were any keepers, there were a couple that looked okay and while I know that this isn’t perfect I do kind of like it!
I only used two flashes which were behind the drop and through a diffuser for this; I really need to look at lighting the base of the column with a third flash as this is too dark!
***Samuel Berthelot suggested that there should be more space around the edges; I tend to agree with him the collision and drop did feel closed in. I had cropped this but not by much so I’ve re-edited it and added 100 pixels to the top and to the bottom and 150 pixels to the left and right edges, it's not a lot but I think that it's better than it was. Had to get a pro account to replace it though, it was about time lol.
Also some people have been asking me about the electronics behind this, I do have a blog on my setup and how I got there but it is very raw and still needs a lot of work, although it should give you an idea***

CZ: Na předměstí Havany byl dne 11. listopadu 2022 zachycen rychlík Tren 13 v relaci La Habana – Guantanamo v čele s lokomotivou DF7G-C 52578, která byla dodána kubánským železnicím z Číny společností CRRC v roce 2010. Relace do města Guantanamo je vůbec nejdelší na Kubě, pro překonání 915 km dlouhé cesty vlak potřebuje více než 19 hodin. Vlak jezdí každé čtyři dny. Osobní vozy byly rovněž dodány z Číny v roce 2019 a znamenaly skokové zvýšení komfortu cestování.

The route to Guantanamo is the longest ever in Cuba, taking more than 19 hours to complete the 915 km journey. The train runs every four days. Passenger cars were also delivered from China in 2019, marking a leap in travel comfort.

Podzimní krajinou v údolí mongolské řeky Charaa mezi stanicemi Shatanga a Tunkh projížděl dne 25. září 2024 kontejnerový vlak směřující z Číny do Ruska. Na mongolském území vlak v části trasy dopravila zachycená "dvojička" 2TE116UM-006.

V roce 2012 se nad početnou flotilou lokomotiv řady ST43 depa v Kamieńcu Ząbkowickim stahovaly mraky nejen na fotografii. „Sulzery” či „Rumuni”, jak je lokomotivám této řady, dle zemí původu přezdíváno, začaly být po letech spolehlivé služby vytlačovány mladšími a modernějšími stroji. První lokomotivy označené CFR jako 060DA spatřily světlo světa v rumunské lokomotivce Uzinele Electroputere - Craiova už v roce 1959 na základě švýcarské licence firem SLM Winterthur, Sulzer a Brown-Boweri. Není bez zajímavosti, že prvních šest strojů bylo vyrobeno přímo v domovském závodě ve Švýcarsku, kde se také podrobily náročným testům na Gotthardské dráze. Kromě Rumunských železnic (CFR) byly lokomotivy v rámci RVHP exportovány v letech 1965 - 1978 i do Bulharska (řada 07), Číny (řada ND2 a ND3) a Polska. PKP označilo všech svých 422 strojů řadou ST43. V prvním desetiletí 21. století, bylo rozhodnuto ponechat řadu ST43 na dožití a lokomotivy začaly být postupně odstavovány. Pro svoji spolehlivost se však zatím jen tak nelikvidují a proto se dá ještě i v roce 2017 v okolí Kamieniece na „Rumuny” v provozu narazit. Slouží především jako provozní zálohy.

Nejmodernější souprava kubánských železnic, tedy ruská lokomotiva řady TGM8KM ze série pro Kubu a souprava čínských vozů pro dálkové vlaky do Santiaga de Cuba směřuje na dočasné havanské hlavní nádraží, neboli na stanici Terminal La Coubre. Hlavní dopravní terminál v Havaně a zároveň největší železniční stanice na Kubě s názvem Estación Central, která byla uvedena do provozu v roce 1912, je totiž od roku 2015 v dlouhodobé rekonstrukci. Stanice, která je zapsána na seznamu světového dědictví UNESCO, si po více než sto letech používání rekonstrukci a celkovou modernizaci jistě zaslouží. Ačkoliv měla rekonstrukce trvat pouhé tři roky, bylo v roce 2019 více než jisté, že se stavební práce protáhnou ještě roky, neboť krom výstavby provizorního nádraží Terminal La Coubre na ploše někdejšího nákladového nádraží, nebylo rekonstruováno skoro nic. Ocelová konstrukce mostu opuštěné spojky na nádraží Central tak působí jako smutné memento zatím nenaplněné vize modernizace kubánských železnic za přispění Ruska a Číny.

Hlavní železniční trať spojující Rusko s Mongolskem vede mezi městy Ulan-Ude a Sükhbaatar. V pohraniční oblasti trať využívá údolí řeky Selenga, která dosahuje délky toku 5539 km, což jej řadí na páté místo mezi nejdelšími řekami světa. Zároveň se jedná o největší přítok jezera Bajkal. Ve zmíněném údolí trať na několika místech přetnula původní tok této řeky a vzniklo několik slepých ramen, které s oblibou využívají rybáři. Na jednom takovém místě mezi mongolskou pohraniční stanicí Khoit a stanicí Sükhbaatar byl dne 2. října 2024 zachycen kontejnerový vlak, který směřoval z Ruska do Číny, v jehož čele byla ruská lokomotiva 2TE10M-2102 z depa Ulan-Ude. V roce 2024 zajišťovaly přeshraniční vozbu Ruské železnice (RŽD - Rossijskije železnyje dorogi), které se na této vozbě střídají v ročním intervalu s Mongolskými železnicemi (UBTZ - Ulaanbaatar Temer Zam).

Jednou z moderných rád spoločnosti General Electric dodaných do Egypta je typ ES30ACi, ktorý je prevádzkovaný od roku 2019 v čelách väčšiny osobných, spravidla rýchlikových a diaľkových spojov v tejto krajine. Ide o 135 ton vážiace 6nápravové rušne s výkonom 2,4 MW a maximálnou rýchlosťou 140 km/h. Jedna z mnohých, ktoré v ten deň prešli po trati vedúcej v údolí Nílu, bola aj 2630, ktorú autor zachytil pol hodinu pred západom slnka v čele vlaku triedy "VIP" s číslom 2007 [Aswan–Alexandria] za vchodovým mechanickým návestidlom do stanice Al-Mahámid.
Tieto rušne, podobne ako žiadne ďalšie v tejto krajine, nemajú spojku vlakového vykurovania, a preto si so sebou každá súprava, ktorá vyžaduje klimatizáciu, vozí aj generátorový vozeň. Ten sa v tomto prípade nachádza ako prvý radený za hnacím vozidlom a zabezpečuje výrobu elektrickej energie na klimatizovanie tejto súpravy (vzhľadom na teplotné podmienky v krajine vykurovanie nie je potrebné).
Súpravy vlakov kategórie VIP sú zložené z veľkopriestorových vozňov, vyrobených v spolupráci Číny a Egypta v rokoch 2015-2016, a okrem súprav Talga sa jedná o najpohodlnejšie cestovanie. Ich zloženie je z vozňov prvej a druhej triedy, pričom okrem samozrejmej klimatizácie je cestujúcim umožnené otáčať sedadlá vo vozňoch podľa smeru jazdy, prípadne je možné z klasického usporiadania sedadiel po dvoch za sebou vytvoriť "štvorky" so sedadlami proti sebe. Netypické na európske pomery je použitie žalúzií v každom okne, namiesto klasicky používaných závesov alebo slnečných roliet.

Vlak je v Maďarsku, na Slovensku a Česku vedený na licenciu dopravcov zo skupiny LTE.

Po břehu přehrady Keban, která leží na řece Eufrat, mezi stanicemi Konak a Çağlar projížděl dne 14. září 2023 pravidelný odpolední nákladní vlak 53897. Toho dne se vozby vlaku ujala dvojice lokomotiv DE 33.063 v čele a DE 24.199 na postrku. Za vlakovou lokomotivou byly řazeny dva vozy, kdy jeden vůz, v tomto případě rychlíkový, slouží jako zázemí vojenskému doprovodu a druhý vůz je pancéřový a slouží jako úkryt v případě napadení vlaku. Zbytek vlaku byl ložený železnou rudou, která pochází z dolu Avnik. Ten se nachází v oblasti východní Anatolie, asi 40 km jihozápadně od města Bingöl a patří společnosti Dimin Madencilik, která je součástí nadnárodní společnosti Ceylan Group. Tento důl obsahuje jedny z největších a nejkvalitnějších zásob magnetitové železné rudy v Turecku. Vytěžená surovina je pak po železnici odvážena jak do tureckých železáren a oceláren, tak také po moři do Číny, na Střední východ, do Afriky a Evropy.

Mongolské železnice zaznamenaly v posledních letech nárůst přeprav, což se odrazilo i ve zvýšené potřebě hnacích vozidel. Velkou pomocí byla dodávka 27 nových lokomotiv 2TE25KM, které nahradily v dálkové vozbě starší lokomotivy 2M62M a částečně i novější řady 2TE116UM a 2TE116UD. Nicméně ani dodávka nových lokomotiv úplně nevyřešila nedostatek hnacích vozidel, proto byly z Ruska z depa Ulan-Ude zapůjčeny dva "boeingy" 2TE116-490 a 1567. Tyto lokomotivy jsou provozovány zejména na severu Mongolska v okolí měst Darkhan a Sükhbaatar, ale můžou se vyskytnout i v čele dálkových vlaků do Ulánbátaru. Tak tomu bylo i dne 30. září 2024, kdy se "dvojička" 2TE116-1567 postavila do čela tranzitního kontejnerového vlaku z Ruska do Číny. Na snímku je tento vlak zachycen v obloucích mezi stanicemi Tsaidam a Salkhit v místech, kde trať kopíruje tok 362 km dlouhé řeky Kharaa.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the United States, whose members regularly take polar bear plunges in the winters. The club was founded by famed health advocate Bernarr McFadden in 1903.
The club began using the event to raise funds for Special Olympics starting in 2005, and Camp Sunshine in 2007. In 2018, the club decided to support local groups and charities and began partnering with the Alliance for Coney Island to raise funds for local nonprofit organizations.
Members swim in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island, New York, United States every Sunday from November through April. Every New Year's Day, the Club is joined by participants from around the country, who partake in an annual swim. The 2005 event had 300 participants and 6000 onlookers. The Chief Polar Bear blows a conch shell to gather the swimmers before they run into the water.
The club was mentioned in popular culture. It is mentioned on the season three episode of Seinfeld, The Pez Dispenser In the episode Kramer informs Jerry that he has joined the club, claiming it to be 'invigorating'. It was also publicized on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in a taped segment by Dan Bakkedahl about the effects of global warming on the club in faux-nature documentary style.

119th Annual Coney Island Polar Bear Club New Year's Day Plunge!
Taking place on January 1, 2022, unlike past years the plunge will be an open swim, the beach will open starting at 11am and allow you to swim at any point until 2pm on the world famous Coney Island Beach. All funds raised help support our local non-profits and community by supporting a variety of initiatives including free public programming, environmental and educational programming, quality of life issues and more. With your help, we can help ensure that Coney Island continues to thrive!
No fee to participate but we encourage donations & fundraising for your plunge!
Registration begins at 10AM, we recommend that all plungers arrive no later than 12PM
Registration tables are located at Stillwell Avenue & the Boardwalk
All participants must sign a waiver on-site the day of the Plunge
Plungers under 18 years of age must have their parent or guardian present to sign the waiver the day of the Plunge.
Plunge as an individual, create a team, join a team or you can even help virtually!
Info about the Plunge:
There is no fee for plunging but donations are encouraged and you must register in order to participate. There is no donation minimum required to register online, You can register and pledge here, or on-site the morning of the plunge after 10:00am. All participants should arrive by 12PM to go through registration. If you are plunging as a group/team, all members must arrive together in order to ensure you all have the same plunge time. ALL participants whether pre-registered or registering the day of must go to the registration area to claim their wristbands with designated times to participate.
Bring warm clothes, surf boots or old sneakers, towels and definitely bring your camera! The NYC Parks Department provides changing facilities on the Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue.

Coney Island is a neighborhood of 50,000 residents with a poverty rate close to 30% and is situated right on the Atlantic Ocean. The Coney Island Polar Bear Club New Year’s Day Plunge helps raise funds to support the local organizations including the New York Aquarium, Alliance for Coney Island, Coney Island USA, Coney Island History Project and other local arts and history organizations helping to make a difference in the Coney Island community.
Nine years after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy and throughout the 2019 Pandemic, the Coney Island neighborhood continues to recover. The Alliance for Coney Island is focused on ensuring residents have an improved quality of life through their supplemental services and workforce development programs.
With your help, the funds raised will support workforce development programs for local residents to connect them to job opportunities and neighborhood services, as well as help increase their advocacy for clean water and educate the public about waste.
