Another great water drop artist is ‘IR Ciny Jim’ we started posting collision photos on flickr around the same sort of time, however his work has moved on so much since his first few photos, he has also proved to be a very helpful and has always offered me good advice.... so thank you Jim!
Waterdrop photography is a strange art, when I first tried capturing water in motion at end of 2010 I was happy to get anything, a crown, splash or column etc; but after building a rig and designing some electronics the challenge isn’t capturing a collision it’s getting the rest of the image perfect.
Having the right lighting, background and contrast in colours will make or break a waterdrop sculpture; it’s almost like choosing the right wrapping paper and ribbon to finish off that great present that you’ve brought, and this is sort of where I’m at the moment, my lighting needs more tweaking but I’ve got a few ideas and I’m looking forward to trying them out!
A slightly abstract choice for the title but the colours kind of reminded me of two sports teams about to do battle.
This was taken a few weeks ago and I’ve been a little too busy to go through the results of that session to see if there were any keepers, there were a couple that looked okay and while I know that this isn’t perfect I do kind of like it!
I only used two flashes which were behind the drop and through a diffuser for this; I really need to look at lighting the base of the column with a third flash as this is too dark!
***Samuel Berthelot suggested that there should be more space around the edges; I tend to agree with him the collision and drop did feel closed in. I had cropped this but not by much so I’ve re-edited it and added 100 pixels to the top and to the bottom and 150 pixels to the left and right edges, it's not a lot but I think that it's better than it was. Had to get a pro account to replace it though, it was about time lol.
Also some people have been asking me about the electronics behind this, I do have a blog on my setup and how I got there but it is very raw and still needs a lot of work, although it should give you an idea***
