On December 23, 2021, when Morgan Farmer and Jake Zakrzewski plugged in to train on their first session of the day at Denver Center (ZDV), they were greeted with reports of severe icing and severe turbulence. Shortly after plugging in, N340J checked on. Zakrzewski and Farmer immediately noticed that he was having trouble maintaining altitude. They later determined that N340JS encountered severe icing, was unable to maintain altitude and descended below the Minimum IFR Altitude (MIA). Though the pilot never declared an emergency, the training team treated the situation as such, and was able to lead him to a safe landing.

NATCA’s Occupational Safety And Health Administration (OSHA) Committee gathered ahead of #NATCACFS in Las Vegas for a meeting. The OSHA Committee assists NATCA representatives and members with identifying, understanding, preventing, and seeking remedies for occupational safety and health (OSH) issues. OSHA Chair Karena Marinas (Los Angeles Center, ZLA) collaborates with the FAA’s Environmental Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) Services group manager, represents NATCA on the National Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Compliance Committee (OSHECCOM), and works with NATCA’s Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to address indoor air quality (IAQ), water quality, and other issues.
