Rundown of the event from Kelly Markos, communications manager for Novita;
So we had 250 kids, and just over 500 trucks. Very impressive. It went really really well, really really smoothly, we actually had more trucks than kids. Last year we had more kids than trucks, so it worked out really well, nobody missed out, nobody got left behind. We had 250, plus their parents, and their brothers and sisters, and their families, so probably had about 2000 people in total.
It’s the biggest one in a few years in terms of truck numbers, last year we had more children, so it was a record-breaking year for children, this year there were less children but more trucks, so it was a good size, the actual event itself is the largest charity truck convoy in the world. And this is our 15th anniversary, so it was a good year to have lots of trucks.
Megan, who ran it this year, this is her second convoy. It used to be in August, but we moved it last year back to May because the weather is better, in August it was always wet and always freezing cold, and although it was a little bit wet this year, we still had beautiful blue skies and lots of sun, so it’s pretty good. It was a fantastic day, and when the trucks actually headed off, blue skies, sunshine, we had lots of people lining the route, so that was really good.
And the trucks are still coming back as you can see, it can take up to 2- 2 ½ hours to get them all out, and get them all back again. It’s just over 40k. We had lots of roadwork this year which slowed it down a little bit.
We’re really lucky with the support this year, we’ve had a lot of big convoys from organizations, so Bianco had the biggest, I think it was just over 30 trucks. They (Rapid) did a great job, Rapid always come in, Australia Post put in a whole heap, Forestry SA put in these yellow things, they’re fantastic. Forestry SA tried to do it last year, but the government regulations wouldn’t let them, so they actually changed the regulations this year so they could be in it.
And the best thing about this year has been Luigi, who’s a first time truckie. First time he’s ever done it, and he decided he wanted to do more than just drive a child, he wanted to actually fill up his tip truck with toys and give them all out and its been fantastic, the smiles on their faces are fantastic.
