The past few years our state of California has suffered massive fire tragedies caused by utility power lines.
I am hearing that preparations to prevent fires this coming fire season are being impacted by the pandemic, and the usual procedures to defend ourselves during wildfires (receiving reinforcements from outside the state, healthy firefighters living together in close quarters in stations and firecamps, etc., etc.) are in doubt.

... of the floral variety. Shooting stars are my favorite wildflowers. They are essentially primroses with reflexed petals. They were previously placed in their own genus (Dodecatheon) based on this remarkable floral trait, but have recently been put back into the primrose group (Primula).
The petal positioning of shooting stars would seem to hinder pollinators from landing on the flower. However they rely on a "buzz" pollination strategy, where vibration of the pollinator's (usually bumble bees) flight muscles causes tightly held pollen to fall off the anthers and land on the legs and body of the pollinator or directly on to the stigma of the same flower. Buzz pollination occurs in other species with similar flower morphology, such as some plants in the tomato family.

All losses are caused by different reasons, but a select few of them happen because something was straight out taken from us, or we were taken ourselves. Imagine being not only stripped of your clothes, your dignity, and your pride, but also being forced to go along for the ride. A ride that involves no acceptance, no going with the flow, no ability to fight, just being absolutely forced to comply with everything and everyone being taken from you.
This can all be metaphorical to describe a situation in your life, but it can also be exactly what it describes. Sex trafficking is still a very real thing and is one of the worst kind of losses you can go through as a human being. Did you know that over 27 million people a year are forced into jobs, not just sexual ones, but hard labor jobs as well? You hear about the numbers sometimes of women and girls forced to be sex slaves, but you don't hear about the number of slaves working on farms, ranches, in mines, and this doesn't even include the number of inmates locked up on bogus crimes and forced to do the jobs society has deemed undesirable. Silenced, subdued, shackled, and sometimes raped repeatedly, there are depths a person can fall into that are unimaginable while the rest of the world declares "We should do something." While sipping their starbucks, and going to get a massage on the weekend at the spa from one of the trafficked women in town.
Next time you feel like you've lost everything, just remember there's a lot further you could fall, and your situation can most likely be fixed a lot easier than some other people's darkest days.

Adenanthos is a genus of Australian native shrubs in the family Proteaceae. Its centre of diversity is southwest Western Australia. Adenanthos obovatus is commonly known as basket flower or jugflower. Each flower consists of four united tepals and a single style. In the earlier flowering stage both the style-end and the anthers are trapped within the perianth tube, so that when the anthers release their pollen, the pollen adheres to the style-end. Shortly after pollen release, the tips of the tepals separate, causing the tube to break apart. When the style-end is released, the style springs erect, and the flower's pollen is thus held on the style-end from where it may be deposited on the face of pollinators like honeyeaters which can access the nectar with their long curved bills. The apex of the style, called the stigma in most flowering plants, is often referred to as the style-end in Proteaceae, since it performs two distinct functions: it performs the usual stigmatic role of pollen-collector, but also functions as a pollen-presenter. I was quite surprised to learn that.
Rhinocéros veut dire « corne sur le nez ». Les rhinos sont devenus très rares (moins de 10 000), à cause du braconnage stupide qu’ils subissent à propos de leurs cornes, sensées avoir des effets thérapeutiques et aphrodisiaques.
Il existe deux genres de rhinocéros en Afrique : les blancs (rares) et les noirs (encore plus rares). En réalité les deux sont gris ! Le nom de « blanc » vient d’une erreur de traduction de l’afrikaans « wijde » (large, pour bouche large) vers l’anglais « white » (blanc).
Les rhinocéros blancs ont en théorie deux cornes mais on coupe les cornes des rhinos des réserves pour éviter le braconnage.
On a vu ce rhino de près ! Il s’est même arrêté quelques secondes en nous regardant, et on s’est dit que s’il lui prenait l’envie de charger on aurait bien du mal à s’en sortir !
Contrairement aux apparences, et malgré ses 4 m de long, 1,80 m de haut et son poids de 2,5 tonnes, le rhino est très agile et peut courir très vite (jusqu’à 50 km/h).
Les rhinocéros blancs vivent 45 ans en moyenne et n’ont pas de prédateur à part l’Homme.

Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).
Rhinoceros means "horn on the nose." Rhinos have become very rare (fewer than 10,000) due to the stupid poaching they suffer for their horns, which are supposed to have therapeutic and aphrodisiac effects.
There are two types of rhinoceroses in Africa: white (rare) and black (even rarer). In reality, both are gray! The name "white" comes from a translation error from the Afrikaans "wijde" (wide, for wide mouth) into the English "white."
White rhinos theoretically have two horns, but rhinos in reserves have their horns cut off to prevent poaching.
We saw this rhino up close! He even stopped for a few seconds to look at us, and we thought that if he got the urge to charge, we'd have a hard time getting away!
Contrary to appearances, and despite his 4 m length, 1.8 m height, and 2.5 ton weight, the rhino is very agile and can run very fast (up to 50 km/h).
White rhinos live 45 years on average and have no predators apart from humans.

A second take on processing this famous nebula...
This is a large object in the sky! The field of view of this image is 3.5 degrees. If you could put a string of full moons in a row you could fit 7 across here. This is my first time using two 200mm lenses. One with a color and the other with a monochrome camera with narrowband filters. I only have 2 of the three narrowband filters I need... still waiting for my Sulphur filter so I can try to get Hubble colors...
