Dunkeld Cathedral was built between the mid-1200s to the late 1400s. The choir, now in use as the parish church, is the earliest part, built in the mid- to late 1200s, and extensively rebuilt in the early 1300s . The original nave is now a shell.
The Lantern and Octagon were originally the location of a Norman Tower. During the night of 12/13 February 1322 the tower collapsed. The collapse may have been caused by ground movement caused by the digging of the foundations of the Lady Chapel.
It was decided to create a larger octagonal space in this area; rather than rebuild the tower. The upper parts of the Octagon are constructed from oak. Although additional wooden supports and iron braces have been inserted over the years to strengthen the original structure.
