Cesky Krumlov is a beautiful Czech town dating back to the 13th Century and located around a horseshoe bend in the Vltava River. In 1302 the house and castle were owned by the House of Rosenberg. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates back to between the 14th and 17th centuries. It was originally part of Czechoslovakia and between 1938 and 1945 it was annexed by Nazi Germany as part of the Sudetenland. The town’s German speaking population was expelled after WWII. During the Soviet occupation (after WWII) much of this beautiful town fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution in 1989 much of the town had been restored to its former glory. This photo was taken from one of the bridges crossing the Vtalva.

San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world and is an independent republic of only 61 square kilometers in size, with its own government and laws even though it is completely surrounded by Italy. The world's oldest sovereign state, it dates from the fourth century AD. Atop the center of this hilly area's highest point, Mount Titano, is the capital city of San Marino. Medieval stone walls enclose the original settlement, built entirely of stone and closed to traffic. A single street leading up to Piazza della Libertà is lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops selling ceramics and duty-free items, one of San Marino's attractions to visiting Italian tourists. The three fortresses at the top of the mountain give San Marino its best-known image and are linked by a path that runs along the entire ridge of the mountain. Although the steep slopes, cliffs and castles of San Marino are impressive enough in themselves, what really takes your breath away is the view from the town. On a clear day you can see the Adriatic a few miles to the east.
San Marino is an independent republic enclosed within Italy. It lies near the Adriatic coast in central Italy. San Marino is said to have been founded in the fourth century by the saint of the same name. Once inside the walled city, it's small enough to simply walk around. The majority of streets can accommodate only small cars, cycles & mopeds. Simply walk around the city. The narrow streets are full of surprises. The walkways wind up and down the hillside in an interesting way, inviting exploration. Photo of Samantha.
Castle Pfalz (Die Pfalz or Pfalzgrafenstein) sits on the island of Falkenau in the middle of the Rhine. It was a toll castle built for the sole purpose of generating revenue. The Baron would raise and lower chains across the river controlling traffic. It worked in concert with Gutenfels Castle (Burg Gutenfels) and the fortified town of Kaub on the other side of the river. They kept those who refused to pay in the dungeon, a wooden float in the well, until they were paid.

It is unknown when the first fortification was constructed at Poeke, but references to it appear from 1139 onwards. The castle played a prominent role during the conflict between Count Louis II of Flanders and the city of Ghent in 1382. In the same year Eulaard II of Poeke died at the battle of Beverhoutsveld when he attempted to stop the Ghent militia, who by then had already taken his fort.
The lords of Poeke were loyal vassals of the Counts of Flanders, with whom they also intermarried: Anastasia van Oultre, the second wife of Eulaard III of Poeke, for example, married as her second husband Robert of Flanders, illegitimate son of Louis II of Flanders.
During the revolt of Ghent in 1452 against Philip the Good, the castle was taken by the Ghent militia. On 5 July 1452 Philip retook it, and had the Ghent militia present executed and the castle destroyed. The rebuilding most likely took over a century. After the death of Jan III of Poeke in 1563, the lordship became the possession of the de Mastaing family, distant relatives of the lords of Poeke. Jean de Jauche, lord of Mastaing, sold the lordship in 1588 to Philibert Delrye. His son Christoffel Delrye sold the lordship in 1597 to Jean de Preudhomme of Lille.
Markus-Antonius de Preudhomme d'Hailly carried out rebuilding activities from 1658 to 1664, and in 1671. Whether these activities were effective is unknown, as sources from this period are lacking. Later, Charles Florent Idesbald de Preudhomme d'Hailly, Burgrave ofNieuwpoort, Oombergen, Sint-Lievens-Esse and Schoonbergen, Baron of Poeke and lord of Neuville, Kanegem and Velaine (1716–1792), carried out significant work on the castle between 1743 and 1752.
In 1872, Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem (1835–1875), from Oudenaarde, bought the estates. He immediately initiated rebuilding works that lasted until 1875. The third storey was integrated into a higher roof, and the interior and the gardens were renovated. There remain hardly any elements dating from before 1872. Additionally, the French garden was turned into an English garden.
The Baron's last descendant, burgemeester and Baroness Ines Pycke de Peteghem, was the last resident and owner of the castle. In her will, dated 1951, she bequeathed the entire estate to the charity Nationaal Werk der Katholieke Schoolkolonies ("National Work of Catholic School Colonies"),[1] who came into possession of it after her death in 1955.
In 1977 the castle and its 56 ha. park became the property of the municipality of Aalter, which now uses it for cultural meetings and festivities. It was used as a location for filming interior and exterior scenes for the 2012 BBC/HBO production of Parade's End. [2]
Poeke Castle became an official national monument on 13 October 1943. The park was declared a protected landscape in 1978.

Rhuddlan Castle (Welsh: Castell Rhuddlan) is a castle located in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, Wales. It was erected by Edward I in 1277 following the First Welsh War.
Much of the work was overseen by master mason James of St George. Rhuddlan, which was not completed until 1282, was built concurrently with Flint Castle, at a time when King Edward I of England was consolidating his conquest of Wales. It was temporarily his residence, and his daughter, Elizabeth, is presumed to have been born there.
Huge Castle sitting very proud on the coastline. Was a hazy day & struggled to get a clear sharp image. I do like it in Black & White though.
Ardrossan Castle is situated on the west coast of Scotland in the town of Ardrossan, Ayrshire. The castle, defended by a moat, stands on a ridge above the town. There is a keep dating from the fifteenth century, and a vaulted range containing a kitchen and cellars. In a deep passageway there is a well. Part of the keep remains up to the corbels of the parapet, but it is in ruins. The original castle, owned by Clan Barclay, was partly destroyed during the Wars of Scottish Independence. This event, in which the English garrison were slaughtered, became known as "Wallace's Larder," a name which is still applied to the remaining vaults. Rebuilt by Clan Montgomery in the 15th century, Ardrossan later fell into disuse and was partially demolished by the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century who used the stones to help construct the Ayr Citadel.
The castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of William Wallace, who is said to wander the ruins on stormy nights.
The castle is also associated with the Devil. Sir Fergus Barclay, also known as "the De'il of Ardrossan", was a horseman, famous around the lands for his tremendous skill. The secret to his skill, however, was a magical bridle, which was given to Barclay by the Devil, in exchange for his soul. However, the Devil was tricked by Barclay into giving his soul back. Infuriated by this trickery, the Devil attacked the castle in his rage, and is said to have left his hoof prints on one of the rocks. Sir Fergus Barclay is buried in the castle chapel, situated a few hundred yards inland from the castle, further down the hill.

Powis Castle is a medieval fortress and grand country house located near Welshpool, Wales, and is renowned for its magnificent interiors and spectacular Baroque gardens. Unlike most border castles built by Normans, Powis was originally constructed by a Welsh prince in the 13th century. Today, the castle and gardens are maintained by the National Trust.
Transformed over centuries from a military fortress into an opulent residence, the castle showcases a wealth of architectural and decorative styles.
Medieval origins: The structure has its roots in the 13th century, with the earliest stone keep likely built by Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn. The impressive twin drum towers framing the main entrance were added in the 14th century.
Rich interiors: The castle is famous for its exceptionally lavish interiors, which reflect the tastes of the Herbert family and later the Clive family over many generations.
Key rooms include:
The State Bedroom: A rare, surviving example of a 17th-century state bedroom, it features a balustrade that once separated the royal bed from the rest of the room to mimic the etiquette of Versailles.
The Long Gallery: An Elizabethan-era addition containing family portraits and busts of Roman emperors.
The Great Staircase: Adorned with 17th-century frescoes and carvings.
The Clive Museum
Within the castle is one of the most important collections of South Asian artifacts in the UK, acquired by Robert Clive and his son during their time with the East India Company in the 18th century.
Controversial collection: The museum, located in the former ballroom, displays over 1,000 items, including textiles, weapons, and ceremonial objects. The origins of the collection are complex and controversial, as many were acquired as spoils of war. The National Trust is conducting ongoing research into the collection's history and provenance.
Exhibits: Notable items include the jewel-encrusted finials from Tipu Sultan's throne and a magnificent state tent.
Gardens
The world-famous Baroque gardens cascade down the hillside in dramatic Italianate terraces, a layout that largely survived the 18th-century shift toward more naturalistic landscapes.
Terraces and topiary: A key feature is the Top Terrace, with its huge, ancient yew trees that have been clipped into fantastical, amorphous shapes over centuries. Below this are the Aviary and Orangery terraces, featuring statues and formal flowerbeds.
Seasonal displays: The gardens are known for their vibrant and varied plant life, offering stunning displays throughout the year, from spring blossoms to brilliant autumn foliage.
Wildlife: Resident peacocks roam freely through the grounds, adding to the picturesque scenery.

Tantallon Castle, East Lothian.
I had another visit to Tantallon on Saturday. One of my favourite spots. It had been quite windy all day and was hoping for the sea to be a bit rougher. I had to get closer and lower to the sea with an 11-16mm lens than I was comfortable with to get this shot. This was about the 4th or 5th attempt before I got one without sea spray on the lens.

Pedro Fajardo Chacon was the first that brought the title and who reside in the castle.

Dunster Castle, Somerset.
Dramatically sited on a wooded hill, a castle has existed here since at least Norman times, with an impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower giving a reminder of its turbulent history. Home of the Luttrell family for more than 600 years, the present building was remodelled in 1868–72 by Antony Salvin. The fine oak staircase and plasterwork ceiling he adapted can still be seen. Visitors can relax on the sunny sheltered terrace, which is home to a variety of subtropical plants and the National Collection of Strawberry Trees. Magnificent views over the Bristol Channel and a pleasant walk beside the River Avill add to the ambience.
Goodrich Castle, which stands above the nearest village to mine, was built by the Normans in the 12th century, undergoing further embellishments during the 13th century. It saw its greatest action during the English Civil War (1642–1651). At that time it was initially held by the Parliamentarians (Roundheads) then during the war the castle fell to the Royalists (Cavaliers), but was finally taken once more by the Roundheads after an extended seige culminating in a relentless and heavy bombardment by 'Roaring Meg', a massive cannon or mortar, the largest of its kind employed by any army of the time. All the visible damage you see in the photo was caused by that cannon, and otherwise the outer walls have have stood firm since those days.

Castle Roche is a Norman castle located some 10 km north-west of Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. It was the seat of the De Verdun family (also spelt De Verdon), who built the castle in 1236 AD.
It is built upon a large rocky outcrop and commands extensive views of the surrounding country. Together with a deep moat its strong walls rendered it virtually impregnable. A secret passage once connected the castle to a round tower outpost.
