"Castle Mountain (2766m or 9076ft.) has caught the imagination of Bow Valley visitors since man’s earliest presence. Although it looks steep and intimidating from the road, it is easily ascended from the back side. The approach is a pleasant and popular hike. When James Hector saw the mountain in 1858, he noted its suggestive appearance, named it accordingly, and the title sufficed for nearly a century. Then, with the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen it was changed to Mount Eisenhower to commemorate the post-war visit of American president Dwight Eisenhower. In 1983, because of public pressure, the original name was rightfully restored. The isolated pinnacle at the southeast end is now called Eisenhower Tower."

FLICKR EXPLORE - July 14, 2011 (Thanks everyone - your comments, etc. are appreciated).

Doonagore Castle sits perched at the top of a hill overlooking the nearby town of Doolin in County Clare, Ireland, and the Atlantic Ocean. The structure is a round 16th-century tower house with a small walled enclosure. Doolin is often referred to as the fiddling capital of Ireland and is a great place to stay when visiting the majestic Cliffs of Moher which are located only a few miles away. Sadly the castle is privately owned and is not open to the public.

The gateway of Castle Rising in Norfolk

Dartmouth Castle is an artillery fort, built to protect Dartmouth harbour in Devon, England. The earliest parts of the castle date from the 1380s, when, in response to the threat of a French attack, the civic authorities created a small enclosure castle overlooking the mouth of the Dart estuary. This was intended to engage enemy ships with catapults and possibly early cannon, and incorporated the local chapel of Saint Petroc within its walls. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was expanded with an artillery tower and an iron chain which could be stretched across the harbour to a tower at Godmerock; this addition formed the oldest known purpose-built coast artillery fort in Britain. Further gun batteries were added during the French invasion scare of the 1540s.

The castle saw service during the English Civil War of 1642 to 1646, during which its vulnerability to attack from the land became apparent, resulting in the Gallants Bower defensive work above it being used to provide additional protection. In 1748, a new gun position called the Grand Battery was added to the castle, equipped with twelve guns. After years of neglect in the early 19th century, the castle was upgraded in 1859 with modern artillery, but defending the port of Dartmouth was no longer a military priority. By the early years of the 20th century the castle was considered redundant by the authorities, who opened it to visitors. It was brought back into use during the First and Second World Wars, but in 1955 it was finally retired from service. In the 21st century, it is managed by English Heritage and the castle received 37,940 visitors in 2007.

Mow Cop Castle - Information from the BBC Domesday Reloaded.

Mow Cop castle was built on a ridge

overlooking the surrounding

countryside. It used to have a wall, a

roof and a floor, all that remains

now is a ruined wall and a stone built

tower, which has three windows.

The summer house was built in 1754

by the Wilbrahams who paid the Hardings

to build it. Nobody is sure why it was

built.

Some people say it was built for

people to enjoy, others say it is a

folly. In 1850 there was a court case

about the Wilbrahams and the Sneyds,

about who owned. It was built on the

border of Cheshire and Staffordshire.

It was eventually decided that the

Wilbrahams owned it. The summer house

was given to the National Trust in

1937.

The castle is also situated on the Gritstone Trail.

The climb up to the top is worth it because on a clear day the view across the Cheshire Plain stretches for 70 miles. The Jodrell Bank Observatory and The Welsh Marches, the name of the defined border between England and Wales, can also be seen. It was quite a blustery but bright day with a scattering of snow when I shot this .... and wonderful weather systems sweeping in. The Mountains looking towards The Welsh Marches were white with snow, lovely sight!

By the way, this is shot from the back of the castle...easier climb! Steeper climb from the car park area at the front, but far better views :)

My latest castle, built on only 32x32 studs. Inspiration from: Karrde, 2 Much Caffeine, de Gothia, LL, and vdubguy67. There is a full interior in every building and all the doors/trapdoors work. Also the castle hinges open adding playability. Lots more pics here: brickbuilt.org/Manaor-Castle.php

On strategically so important place towers Trentino’s largest fortress, referred to as Castel Beseno. First written documents date back to the 12th century, when the castle still belonged to the counts of Appiano and served as a residence to the aristocratic family Da Beseno. In the following years and centuries, the castle witnessed a rather turbulent history. In 1470 it was handed over to the counts Trapp, a noble family from Styria affiliated with the Austrian emperor. Soon the castle had to be rennovated due to a fire and the medieval castle turned into a residence. Threatened by decay, the castle was given to the Province of Trento, rennovated and made a remote seat of the Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum. Two mighty elliptical walls featuring a length of 250 and a width of 55 metres surround the castle. Worth seeing are also the dark castle gate, the drawbridge, the crenels and the arena.

Above the doorway in the 18th century extension there are two very worn carved stones. On the lower one can be seen the date 1721, above which are the initials JN and ML. While 1721 may be the date of this 18th century wing, it has been suggested that the wing is late 18th century, in which case once again, the date stone belongs to some earlier work and has been moved.

The upper stone is now illegible so far as I can see, but is known to have had a date on it that started with 16, together with traces of arms. This stone presumably came from the keep and was moved here when the old front door was covered over by the extension. If so, it would not be the date of the original castle, which is believed to date back to the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortification on the peninsula of Tintagel Island near the village of Tintagel, Cornwall. A castle was built on the site by Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall in the 13th century, during the Middle Ages but later fell into disrepair and ruin.

Archaeological investigation revealed traces of a much earlier settlement, which had trading links with the Mediterranean world during the Late Roman period. Digs have uncovered the outlines of a palace from the 5th or early 6th century with evidence of writing and of articles brought in from Spain and the eastern Mediterranean.

The castle has a long association with legends related to King Arthur. This was first recorded in the 12th century when Geoffrey of Monmouth described Tintagel as the place of Arthur's conception in his mythological account of British history.

Belgium - Laarne

More about Kasteel van Laarne

Laarne Castle is a castle in the Belgian municipality of Laarne. It dates from the 11th or 12th century. The castle was originally a moated castle. After a restoration in 1962, it now serves as a museum. Of the original castle, only the quadrangular keep tower now remains. (A keep is the most important, best fortified tower of medieval castles). The keep of Laarne Castle is built of Balegem stone and has two small corner towers with stone spires. The keep was connected to defensive towers by walls. The latter were round and also had stone spires. The pointed roof of the keep dates from the second half of the 17th century. Over time, the battlements, the trap bridge and portcullises disappeared. A fixed bridge with three arches and a baroque front building replaced it. In addition, the connecting walls between the defensive towers were replaced by residential areas. These are characterized by large windows with cross frames. Thirteenth and fourteenth centuryBeatrix van Massemen, daughter of Diederik, is explicitly mentioned as lady of Laarne between 1213 and 1222. She was married to Gerard van Zottegem, the second son of Walter, Lord of Zottegem. They had at least ten children. Their son, Giselbrecht van Zottegem, survived his older brothers and became lord of Ressegem, Leeuwergem, Massemen, Laarne and Kalken. On the occasion of his marriage of Matilda of Bethune, daughter of the lord of Dendermonde, he was granted the lordships of Laarne and Kalken in 1228-1229. According to E. Balthau, he probably had the "court of Laarne" built shortly afterwards, the predecessor of the castle. Various military activities are known of him. In 1214-1215 he, with two of his brothers and other Flemish nobles, was a mercenary in the service of the English king John without Land during the revolt of the English nobles. This would lead to the Magna Charta in 1215. In 1217-1218 he took part in the 5th Crusade in Egypt, which would lead to the defeat of the Christian army at Damiete in 1218.

Initially named Castle mountain in 1858 by James Hector for its castle-like appearance. Then for the period 1946 to 1979 the mountain was called Mount Eisenhower.

Due to the public pressure the mountain's name was restored to Castle Mountain. A pinnacle on the southeastern side of the mountain was named Eisenhower Tower.

Castle Stalker – in the Gaelic, Stalcaire, meaning Hunter or Falconer – is believed originally to have been the site of a Fortalice (a small fortified building) belonging to the MacDougalls when they were Lords of Lorn, and built around 1320. The MacDougalls lost their title after their defeat by King Bruce at Brander Pass in 1308 but regained it for a period after 1328. In about 1388 the Lordship of Lorn passed to the Stewarts, the lands including Castle Stalker.

Cesky Krumlov is a beautiful Czech town dating back to the 13th Century and located around a horseshoe bend in the Vltava River. In 1302 the house and castle were owned by the House of Rosenberg. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates back to between the 14th and 17th centuries. It was originally part of Czechoslovakia and between 1938 and 1945 it was annexed by Nazi Germany as part of the Sudetenland. The town’s German speaking population was expelled after WWII. During the Soviet occupation (after WWII) much of this beautiful town fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution in 1989 much of the town had been restored to its former glory. This photo was taken from one of the bridges crossing the Vtalva.

Castle Pfalz (Die Pfalz or Pfalzgrafenstein) sits on the island of Falkenau in the middle of the Rhine. It was a toll castle built for the sole purpose of generating revenue. The Baron would raise and lower chains across the river controlling traffic. It worked in concert with Gutenfels Castle (Burg Gutenfels) and the fortified town of Kaub on the other side of the river. They kept those who refused to pay in the dungeon, a wooden float in the well, until they were paid.

KIlkenny Castle is a beautiful medieval castle in the centre of Kilkenny, smashing place to visit with an excellent tour and lovely gardens.

Few buildings in Ireland can boast a longer history of continuous occupation than Kilkenny Castle. Founded soon after the Norman conquest of Ireland, the Castle has been rebuilt, extended and adapted to suit changing circumstances and uses over a period of 800 years.

Today, Kilkenny Castle is open to visitors all year round and is largely a Victorian remodelling of the thirteenth century defensive Castle. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to see this grand country house and walk through its fifty acres of rolling parkland with mature trees and an abundance of wildlife. Other features include a formal terraced rose garden, woodlands and a man-made lake, which were added in the nineteenth century. There is also a tearoom, playground and several orienteering trails for visitors to enjoy.

Rhuddlan Castle (Welsh: Castell Rhuddlan) is a castle located in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, Wales. It was erected by Edward I in 1277 following the First Welsh War.

Much of the work was overseen by master mason James of St George. Rhuddlan, which was not completed until 1282, was built concurrently with Flint Castle, at a time when King Edward I of England was consolidating his conquest of Wales. It was temporarily his residence, and his daughter, Elizabeth, is presumed to have been born there.

Ardrossan Castle is situated on the west coast of Scotland in the town of Ardrossan, Ayrshire. The castle, defended by a moat, stands on a ridge above the town. There is a keep dating from the fifteenth century, and a vaulted range containing a kitchen and cellars. In a deep passageway there is a well. Part of the keep remains up to the corbels of the parapet, but it is in ruins. The original castle, owned by Clan Barclay, was partly destroyed during the Wars of Scottish Independence. This event, in which the English garrison were slaughtered, became known as "Wallace's Larder," a name which is still applied to the remaining vaults. Rebuilt by Clan Montgomery in the 15th century, Ardrossan later fell into disuse and was partially demolished by the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century who used the stones to help construct the Ayr Citadel.

The castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of William Wallace, who is said to wander the ruins on stormy nights.

The castle is also associated with the Devil. Sir Fergus Barclay, also known as "the De'il of Ardrossan", was a horseman, famous around the lands for his tremendous skill. The secret to his skill, however, was a magical bridle, which was given to Barclay by the Devil, in exchange for his soul. However, the Devil was tricked by Barclay into giving his soul back. Infuriated by this trickery, the Devil attacked the castle in his rage, and is said to have left his hoof prints on one of the rocks. Sir Fergus Barclay is buried in the castle chapel, situated a few hundred yards inland from the castle, further down the hill.
