Karen and I had been searching the lakes for Caspian Terns for days with no luck. We stopped Lake Kittimaqundi and 10 of them appeared.

This is the time of year Caspian Terns bring their young to Crissy Lagoon in San Francisco, leaving them on an island while they go out and find fish for them. Caspian Terns patrol over the water, scanning for small fish at a low height. When they find fish they hover about 10 feet above the surface and wait for the right moment. They then dive headfirst into the water, closing their bill around a fish. They then take off immediately and either swallow the fish while flying or take it to feed their young.

The wonderful guys of Caspian agreed to pose for some quick promotional shots while staying with us in Salt Lake City. For the unfamiliar, Caspian is a fantastic instrumental band from Beverly, MA. Check them out here: www.myspace.com/caspiantheband

Nice in-flight shot of i think a Caspian tern, north end of Pea Island NWR. These guys are almost the size of herring gulls, and this guy was doing clockwise "laps" which intersected the shore - each time he was on turns 1 & 2 i crept closer, finally got this shot. I had seen this "laps" behavior earlier this year with Caspians at J. Heinz NWR near Philly.

Caspian are a band that love harsh, unphotographable lighting. Seriously, dudes? Two 6" clamp lights with red bulbs placed in the middle of the stage facing up? No front lighting at all. What a nightmare. I focused shooting from side stage, taking advantage of all the light possible. This set was a pain to shoot, but life changing to witness. They're less of a band or show, more of a movement or experience. I love these dudes. I hope they decide soon that they like a different color light set up.
