Tasting Britain was invited down to Spitalfields City Farm (yes, there is indeed a farm in Spitalfields, just in case you missed itâ¦.) to meet Matthew 'Funthyme' Phelps and eat all of his delicious, kinda Spanish, and locally (very locally) sourced food. Now coming up on the business' 5th year anniversary - Matt quit a career in sales in the advertising industry when he turned 30, realising that now would be a good time to get into the catering business.
Since then he's been busy, and doing rather well. You could be saying that he's been having a 'fun thyme' (see what I did there? *ducks projectiles*). That's him behind the grill putting up with my camera/shit. He now runs supperclubs, does event catering, and has been working with the likes of Sohoâs Experimental Cocktail Club, The Camden Arts Centre and Village Underground in East London. Matt's delicious foods included a farm foraged salad, some kind of beef steak that I doubled up on and a cream and cherry based dessert made from polenta (which, as far as I know, is a Northern Italian thing, not a Spanish thing?)
As for Spitalfields City Farm, this place is fuckin' amazing. Built on the site of what was a former railway goods depot, the farm was started in 1978 'in response to local peopleâs wishes to convert wasteland into allotments'. It has been perpetually under the threat of developers since then - and in 1980 gained charitable status. Since then it's developed into what appears to be some multifaceted, all singing, all dancing community project. When I was there I saw artwork (check the guy making things out of discarded bottlecaps), community farming (chicken, rabbits, geese, plus a small scale yet legitimate urban zoo), polytunnels growing all manner of things, a zoo, a playground, a coffee shopâ¦it goes on.
Though the farm gained charitable status in 1980, itâs been under regular threat from developers since then (more unaffordable apartments, anyone?). In a past life it was a railway goods depot (which you can kinda tell if you look at where itâs situated). Apparantly urban farming is a long established East End tradition, and I can't help but think that London could benefit from seeing these kind of projects in more places.

Edifici bastit de carreu i maçoneria arrebossada i pintada, de planta baixa, entressol i pis. La coberta és de teula a una sola vessant. La façana presenta interessants elements gòtics entre els que cal destacar una porta dovellada amb arc apuntat i un finestral trilobulat a la planta noble.

La construcció, datada per diversos autors al segle XV, és una mostra del moment d'esplendor de Falset en l'edat mitjana moment en què acollia la cort del comtes de Prades. L'edifici constitueix un element atípic en el context local que s'ha usat com a edifici auxiliar.

‘Yes We Can’ group show @ Atom Gallery
Here at id-iom it seems we have taken our collective foot off the pedal when it comes to the art game but that all changed recently when Teddy Baden got in touch to say he had a show coming up at Atom Gallery featuring the humble spray can and would we be interested in getting involved. That was enough to pique our interest, needless to say we agreed.
The name of the game was to use an empty spray can to create a work of art. Cue some head scratching. Then cue an action montage where we actually get to work. Then halt that for a while due to unforeseen circumstances before a hurried sprint for the finish.
What we’re left with is ‘The Creep’ and the ‘Emergency Graffiti Kit’. The Creep just wants a hug - but there’s something just a little off in his demeanour. Hence the name. I wouldn’t recommend giving him a hug, it gets a little awkward. The Emergency Graffiti Kit does exactly what it says on the tin. For the sake of the exhibition the can had to be empty but to fully arm the kit a new can and fat cat would need to be added. For times when nothing else will do…
Anyway, you can catch ours, and 80+ other street artists interpretation of an empty can at Atom Gallery until the 30th November.

Jamie and Alice both like the riding cushion we got for Jamie in Boulder last year, but it only covers half of the seat. We picked up a cushion for the other half in Grande Prairie on this trip, but they avoid it (perhaps because it's a little thinner and doesn't raise them up high enough to see out the window while laying down). So we're going to try to get another one like Jamie's.
