A female Anna's Hummingbird and male Flame Skimmer competing for insects! The Dragonfly landed at the top of a spent Yucca Bloom, this is a prime spot for our Hummingbirds. The Anna's Hummingbird succeeded in chasing the Dragonfly out of her territory. It was a fun interaction between the two species, both were very curious and leery of each other. I was outside on our back deck taking bird photos. The Immature Bald Eagle was soaring above my head. I believe it was checking out our Koi pond, which is covered with a net, so the Koi are safe. A Camouflaged European Mantis!! When I was pruning the spent Red Hot Poker spikes, I saw movement. This fat female European Mantis crawled up one of the reeds. She looks like she is going to be laying her eggs soon.The female bites the head off the male during or after mating. Talons of a Juvie Cooper's Hawk! For this shot, I focused on the Coop's talons when he was pearched on our bird bath. Their entire feet are specially adapted for catching and killing prey, featuring a powerful grip and a structure that allows them to firmly grasp and hold their prey. I was watering our potted flowers on our back deck, when I heard a loud flapping of feathers. I looked into our backyard and all of our backyard birds were diving for cover in our Rosy Glow bushes, and a Immature Cooper's Hawk landed on one of our fence posts.
