Happy Fence Friday!

A lovely paint horse enjoying some time at pasture. Cades Cove TN.

Soft morning light drifts through the open fields of Cades Cove as autumn settles gently into the Great Smoky Mountains. A weathered tree anchors the foreground, its branches framing a quiet pasture where mist lingers low and the distant hills fade into layers of atmosphere. Fences lean with age, hinting at the long human history woven into this protected valley, while vibrant fall color glows against the cool greens of the meadow.

These are not wild horses, but part of a domesticated herd in Cades Cove. Even so, it was enjoyable watching them. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA, October 2023

For the month of January, I'm showcasing the beauty of rural landscapes … and check out my latest photo essay - 'Snowy Sunday in Belleville' - at wanderstl.com

I captured this sunrise a few years back in Cades Cove, which is part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Catching a sunrise here is wonderful experience, often very atmospheric. Later in the day and in the evenings, crowds can make the experience less enjoyable, but it is what it is, right?

So, confession: this photo used to be in my Flickr "stream," but since I let my Flickr Pro membership lapse, I had to delete more than 2000 pictures from my account, lest photos be deleted for me. I figured I would use the culling as an opportunity to revisit some of my real favorites from years ago.

This is the first time since I have been into photography that I have been to Cades Cove, we went several times when I was a teenager and younger but I haven't been back since. I met my mother and sisters up here after I worked inventory yesterday so that we could go out there and see the synchronized lightning bugs which by the way should be on your bucket list.
