El National Mall (o Explanada Nacional) suele considerarse el corazón político de los Estados Unidos. Esta gran explanada verde en el centro de Washington D.C. está rodeada por imponentes monumentos, icónicos edificios gubernamentales e impresionantes museos. Se extiende por dos millas al sur de la Casa Blanca, desde el edificio del Capitolio de EE.UU. en el este hasta el monumento a Lincoln y el río Potomac, en el oeste. El parque es el hogar del Smithsonian, un conjunto de museos de gran impotancia nacional, así como la mayoría de los monumentos más iconicos de la Nacion.
En 1791, el Presidente George Washington encargó al arquitecto franco-estadounidense Pierre Charles L'Enfant que diseñara la capital de Estados Unidos en un área de unos 22 kilómetros cuadrados. L’Enfant quería crear un “gran bulevar” entre el Capitolio de los Estados Unidos y el lugar donde hoy se erige el Monumento Washington. En 1901, el Senador James McMillan inició el Plan McMillan, una extensión del plan de L’Enfant para crear el National Mall tal y como lo conocemos hoy.
