life flourishes at interfaces

Call me a grumpy old man and a buzzkill, but one of three young skateboarders who were using this giant hoop-shaped sculpture as a ramp rolled out into very busy pre-Marathon State Street traffic. Can you see a problem brewing.

And yes, I called 911 on them. Dumb-ass kids.

And the city planner who approved this attractive nuisance to be installed in the median of a busy downtown street is an even bigger dumb-ass than the skaters. At least the skaters had the excuse of being teenage boys, a group whose mantra is, more often than not, "Hey, dudes -- watch this!".

Había una vez

Una mujer que encontró

A las cómplices de sus sueños.

Esta mi historia.

Once upon a time

A lady finally found

Her dream partners in crime.

That´s my story.

The end

Campfire whispers spin rumors of Ranger Duke “Buzzkill” Wilder, the eeriest monster hunter in the Outback.

With posse in tow, he drives a coughing metal beast stitched with unlucky charms, mysterious injectables, and provisional choices that stain the soul like motor oil.

They say he sports a fabulous ten-gallon hat, proudly open carries, and wears a face that howls, “I’ve seen too much… just enough to wear down the grin, but leave the teeth sharp.”

Using only the tone adjustments in Lightroom gave either detail in the surface of the moon or a notion of the wispy clouds nearby - but not both. I would rotate this counter-clockwise and crop to make it more dramatic, but my inner Neil Degrasse Tyson would feel guilty about showing the moon in the wrong orientation.

Why is it orange? The white moon actually has a spectrum very similar to the sun, but it is less bright. When the slight overexposure is reduced in Lightroom, the blown-out moon turns orange. This is probably because the moon was low in the sky and has the same explanation as for the sun appearing red at dawn and dusk: light travelling from the source (moon) to your eye passes through a thicker layer of air than when overhead and much of the blue light is scattered before it reaches you.

Rock will, and always be, the go-to music for people wanting to vent out just about anything.

Twin Berlin, a three-piece band composed of Matt Lopez, James Janocha, and Sean O’Neil, is bringing their “raw and belligerent music” to all of the FrostWire users and FrostClick readers alike. [And we love it.]

They’re not really metal, but not exactly cookie-cutter pop rock either. As one flips through each of the 11 tracks on their latest collection, Sleazebrain, one can’t help but admire the craftsmanship that the guys pour out onto these.

“You’re A Problem” is a modest way to kick things off – in a vintage Weezer kind of way – but “Keep Your Mouth Shut” brings things to a spunky overdrive. The tracks flow one to the other – only to revel new and even better beats with each single one. “Bet You’re OK” and “You Could Have Warned Me” are some of favorites though, so make sure to stick around.

The music journey fired off rather quickly for the band. Not too long after coming together, Twin Berlin was nominated as the Best Breakout Boston Band by MTV, caught a spot on a VMA tour, and showed up on one of Boston’s biggest indie/alternative radio stations. They later worked with Travis Baker of Blink-182 on recording some of their new music. “Their mix of gritty guitars and undeniable hooks really drew me in.” explained Barker. Catching some more of the welcome attention, Twin Berlin was than invited to play alongside Third Eye Blind, Spin Doctors, Switchfoot and Eve 6 at their Earthfest celebration at the Hatch Shell in Boston. Since than they appeared on NBC, played countless of other shows alongside some great names, and, most importantly released their first full-length album, Sleazebrain with “songs born out of anxiety and self doubt, executed with a confident, sarcastic swagger.”

Enjoy!

The day when the cannibals discovered their one true god.

Pookie and I took a brief walk in the woods with our waterproof cameras, enjoying being able to take pictures while snow was still falling, but being crazy with how badly we wanted to be taking macros. So many trees with red berries on them, blanketed in snow! Oh well. GoPro fisheye it is instead. Here's Rio, welcoming us home with Christmas lights.

(just kidding... i asked both of these guys to flip me off and the buzzkill on the left refused)

My notes from KCDC 2015. Talk by Ryan Doll.

This is a wonderful neon sign, though the message about the death of the owner is a bit of a buzzkill. I honestly forgot about this sign, but I will go back for a daytime shot.

Okay - at least some of them. The entire set of 40 ladies can be seen over on Facebook.

Faithful companion Lscan joined me out at the Peoria Palace on Monday and Tuesday night as we photographed the entire Peoria Push Derby Dames before their big debut match this Saturday night at the East Peoria Convention Center doors open at 8pm. Whew.

The costumes were outlandish and very over-the-top. And they were totally enjoyable. What a great bunch of people to photograph. All of their official Derby names are referenced as notes inside the image.

The match is up next - looking forward to a little sports photography Saturday night.

Rock it ladies!

Rode down an elevator shooting PANO through the window facing out toward the mini-mall. Loaded it into Photoshop and worked on it for about 1/2 hour.

This was taken at the TWiT Brickhouse in Petaluma CA on October 16, 2011. And it made it to my Flickr stream to honor the Buzzkill, John C. Dvorak on his Birthday.

In The Morning! Thanks for all the podcasts and columns.

It's a serious buzzkill when your karaoke session gets rudely interupted by the whole system crashing.

I'm riding up that monster hill up Humboldt, approaching North, and I'm pulling a kid in a trailer to boot, and I'm totally high on the fact that I'm doing this, and some dickslap broke some glass, and by the time i cross the intersection and am approaching Wright street, well, there it is.

Buzzkill.
