i think i can officially call it a process photo now that i've got two of 'em.

These cute kids were singing Christmas carols in Red Bank, when this

guy in a Santa suit came by holding this sign up.

I'm not sure if he was part of the group (probably not) or just some

angry playa hater.

there's a great Robert Frost trail in Ripton. It has a few of his nature poems put up in places where they're appropriate. It's nice. Except that it got flooded last year and hasn't been fixed yet. And the copyright notices harsh my mellow.

Continuing on the hunt for SD40E’s, we catch RMR P609 with the only non-six-axle unit with a P3 heads into Hampton.

hadn't shot film in a while and i was jonesing too...

 

Decieded to go with the A-1 and it felt so damn good in my hands...

 

as im looking for film, i came across a 2x macro lens converter. - i didnt even realize i had this .. i have no recollection when or how i acquired it but knew i needed to give it a whirl.

 

lots of fun. i missed film, always will love the qualitty of film over digital... but waiting that damn hour for the film to be developed and then scanned was a killer.. plus the $6 is a buzzkill... nonetheless., i got a few good shots and i will shoot more film ....

George Santayana must occasionally yearn for a postmortem retraction of that famous line about repeating history. The creators of SOD took their best shot at making the long-dead philosopher turn over in his grave with this well-intentioned but exasperating RPG about a guy with a J-Pop name wildly careening from the present day to an approximation of the Middle Ages in a bid to avoid being murdered.

 

Story-intensive games should in theory offer greater rewards to a translator; after all, the gameplay is all about adapting to plot turns and picking up clues from dialogues. Since bad original writing is the norm in the game industry, the fun of any game job is in subversively trying to raise the level of the writing, while unobtrusively correcting factual mistakes and cultural faux pas. The buzzkill in a "period piece" job like SOD is that the script is saturated with bad history. The time chosen for the medieval setting is 1581-86, a regrettable choice given that it falls about 80 years ahead of even the most generous description of what constituted the Middle Ages in what is now Germany. While the quibble about time may seem petty considering that what we know as the Medieval era lasted from around 600 to 1500 CE in Europe, the lack of any discernible effort at cultural authenticity is a legitimate cause for grievance. The way I figure it, there's always the option to go the fantasy route if one is way too research-shy for period pieces.

I had fun anyway nyeah.

 

Hiking upto the top of Mt Diablo can be quite a challenge. Especially with the large elevation gain and mostly open unshaded terrain that you see on a sunny day. And lets not even get into the voracious growth of poison oak on the trail - I already got a few blisters on my arms.

 

But the wildflowers at the top were a treat. I wasn't expecting so many this late in May, but it was quite a spectacle even though they had started to fade out. While poppies, lupines, tidytips and buttercups dominated the open grasslands, vibrantly red Indian Paintbrush and colorful Chinese Houses covered up much of the shaded areas underneath trees. There were a few rarer varieties including the endemic and endangered Fairy Lantern. The bees and butterflys thronging the wildflowers were the icing on the cake. The buzzkill were some mosquito like insects buzzing all over me seeking to bite every square inch of open skin.

 

All in all, a great day of late spring hiking and a good test for my still recovering legs.

 

Above is the red and purple contrasts created by the aforementioned Chinese Houses and the Paintbrush in a shady turn of one of the main trails and below is the endemic Fairy lantern. I wish I had time to actually look underneath it as they are supposed to be beautiful inside.

PS: The wildflowers of California are fleeting. Doesn't last for more than a few weeks. On the other hand the effect of this oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is going to be felt for decades . If you have found the images and videos of the Gulf Oil Spill heartwrenching, please volunteer (if nearby) or donate to organizations involved in the wildlife cleanup activities or to the National Parks Foundation for cleanup of the multitude of National Parks that were and are still getting damaged by this environmental distaster of an unprecedented scale.

Simon at Madame K's in Ballard. It is a weird Italian-food place (sort of) that has this bordello theme. It doesn't work so well. I did NOT like their lasagna, and Simon would have preferred the Thai place we happened to completely ignore, despite the fact that it's what we were looking for.
