I've been making these for a few years & recently taught a class how to make them. I use vintage (or vintage looking) salt/pepper shakers or small vintage perfume bottles.
Only vintage buttons are used. Sweet!

I have to say -- even though I'm doing laundry, suffering from a miserable cold and extended SF Giants torture, right now -- I'm having the time of my life while sorting through a lifetime of badges, watching Jon Stewart's Night Of Too Many Stars, and drinking double bourbons on the rocks.

Manhattan, New York September 2012. This giant button with its 31ft long needle is on the corner of 7th Avenue (Fashion Avenue) and 39th St. It is leaning on the Fashion Centre Information Kiosk (and was constructed at the same time). It claims to be the largest button in the world.
We didn't notice it at the time, but down in the bottom left corner of the photogrpah is another scultpure, The Garment Worker, by Judith Weller, showing an immigrant worker in the Garment District with his treadle sewing machine.
In April 1955 30 buttons were attached to this 10 3/4'' x 13'' piece of cardboard that was from a sign in Emmaus, PA as seen on the back of this display. Some of the buttons are missing. There seems no theme to this BUTTON DISPLAY CARD so it may have been a child that was given the cardboard and buttons to keep them busy. There are some celluloid buttons, metal buttons, plastic and glass on this display.
THIS CARD IS FOR DISPLAY ONLY-NOT FOR SALE

If you love buttons, you’re just going to adore me.
I’m the Mini Buttoned Book Necklace, a miniature, wearable & usable journal for your thoughts.
I wear a rustic brandy reclaimed leather coat which wraps your words up safely with my double leather tie. Stitched into my cover is a dark brown wooden button measuring 12mm wide.
Open me up and you’ll find I begin and end with handmade marbled paper featuring red, white & green hues. To follow are 36 pages (72 sheets) of tea-stained paper for your little hand written snippets & scriptures. Hand-torn and stitched with archival linen thread, my pages are dressed up with red & white striped headbands.
Measuring 1 x 1 ¼ inches, I hang from a fine bronze chain which secures with a lobster & eye clasp. When around the neck, my total length allows of 13 inches (26 doubled up) allows me to be worn, read & admired all at once.
