In the remote desert of Southeastern Utah lies a stunning geological formation that rises almost cathedral-like from the eroded landscape below — Factory Butte. Located off Highway 24 between Torrey and Hanksville, just east of Capitol Reef National Park, this 6,302 foot monolith was once home to dusty coal miners. These days its surrounding lunar badlands provide a wonderland for amateur and professional photographers alike — an endless vista of colorful desert flora, orange pockmarked sandstone and centuries of relentless erosion.Factory Butte is the most recognizable feature of a large area of stark, barren land either side of the Fremont River known as the Upper Blue Hills, bordered by Capitol Reef to the west, the Henry Mountains to the south, San Rafael Swell to the north and the San Rafael Desert to the east. I had been to the area around few times before, but never could find an image I liked. Not until I got up at 5 to be there a clear morning sunrise . I spent a few days in Hanksville in southern Utah, mainly to photograph the colorful Bentonite Hills. But there were a few other notable landscape features on my list to check out in the area, and Factory Butte was one of them. On this morning the clouds cooperated and lit up very briefly as the Sun came up.

An excellent examplar of its type, a perfect curtain plunging over pillow basalt.

Sandwiched between Capital Reef, Canyonlands and Escalante sets the Factory Butte which is an oddly placed butte in the middle of a lifeless and barren badlands. The Factory Butte rises about 900ft from the desert floor with mesmerizing ripples and distinctive veins of rock. A couple weeks I tried taking a client to Alstrom Point, but the road was blocked by a huge impassable mud pit. Thus, we had to go somewhere else. A week later, I took a couple from Austrailia out to Alstrom. Near the previous mud pit was now some neat cracked mud features leading into Batman Butte.

UPDATE 2: Wow, I forgot how fun it is to have a photo on Flickr Explore. 80,000+ views of my stream in one day is crazy. Some were asking about the location. This is taken from Steptoe Butte State Park in Washington State. It's quickly becoming a premiere stop on spring photo tours. Aperture Academy was gearing up for a tour group the day I was there. I live close so I make several visits every year. Here are some of the things I've learned. 1) Go Long - the best shots I've gotten are 150-300mm. I've been wanting to use my 500mm but there is usually too much wind to make it work. 2) Use a polarizing filter - it's usually hazy so this helps cut through it, although Lightroom can perform miracles with the contrast adjustment which is what I did on this shot, 3) Go early - I've seen good sunset shots but my best experiences have been in the morning before the wind kicks up dust that lingers into the evening, 4) It's worth it - If you follow lesson 3 you will wake up at 3 a.m. to catch the 5 a.m. sunrise and wonder if it's worth it. It is. Thanks again for all the great feedback. UPDATE: Thanks Flickr for including this in explore and thanks for all the great feedback. The comments and favs are much appreciated.

A creative edit of Factory Butte.

This is another version of this incredible place. There were two things wrong with this photo that almost made me completely ignore it. One was all of the OHV tracks in the sand dunes in the foreground. The second being the plain sky.

So I proceeded to painstakingly brush out all of the tracks in the dunes in the foreground. Primarily to try to forget my frustration with my inability to get the photo of this place that I had travelled there to get. The sun shone this beautiful orange light on the butte and the dunes below but that sky... ech. It was a shame to not use this photo and I didn't like it the way that it was.

So instead of just filing it away, or deleting it completely, I decided that I would clean up the foreground and drop in a sky from the sunrise the morning before.

I know that I'll get some hate from this, but I'm being transparent about my processing. Consider it a composite. Consider it an art piece and not a photograph. I just hope that you consider it beautiful like I do.

Wild Horse Butte is an iconic Utah red rock formation in Goblin Valley. Here it is framed between two of the goblins.

Situated between Capitol Reef to the west, the Henry Mountains to the south, the San Rafael Swell to the north and the San Rafael desert to the east. This butte is a popular spot for both Photographers and OHV (off highway vehicles). This situation has created a conflict of sorts as the landscape has tracks through it. This causes a challenge in the hope of getting a pristine photo of this location.

The most common method of photographing this beaut of a butte is from the air via a drone. From the air the tire tracks are plain to see. It takes some time to repair the photo by cloning out the tracks.

This is a scene that I have been wanting to photograph for a while now but with this being a pretty common location for landscape photographers, it's a little difficult to create something unique.

I had the opportunity to go there last week to photograph this area, including Factory Butte. Because I only had a couple of days there I didn't have the epic skies that I had hoped above this landscape.

I brought this photo up and decided to try to process it into something, anything to justify the time that I spent there - and the time spent repairing it. I took a lot of time working on the foreground but when I was done that plain, blank sky stared at me. I almost hit delete.

Now I have always said that the reason people will drop in a sky is because their time is limited and the time spent at a location didn't produce the results that were hoped for. This was the exact situation that I was in with this image. As I sat there carefully brushing out tire tracks that blank sky taunted at me.

Once I was done with the foreground repair I saved the file and then decided to play with some different skies and boom. I saw this.

I have always said that if a photo is a composite I'm just fine with it as long as the artist is honest and transparent about it being so. I'm not one to criticize a person's creative expression. All I ask for is honesty.

And so in my attempt at transparency, I explain the process that I went through to create this image for you. This is a composite of two images combined to create the image that I had hoped to create naturally.

I hope that you enjoy it for what it is.

Towards the end of the morning olden Hour.

A photographer's work often begins before sunrise. Factory Butte is the most recognizable feature of a large area of stark, barren land either side of the Fremont River known as the Upper Blue Hills, bordered by Capitol Reef to the west, the Henry Mountains to the south, San Rafael Swell to the north and the San Rafael Desert to the east. This was the main attraction for me going into the Hanksville portion of the trip. The landscape is incredible and doesn’t look like any place on Earth. From the ground, it’s pretty cool, but to truly appreciate the area, you need to get a different perspective.

Flying your drone here is both legal and highly recommended. You see the textures. The colors. You see the entirety of the landscape that you’d only get to see if you were in a low flying airplane.

An aerial image of a prominent butte near Hanksville, Utah taken on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022.

This is a shot of Factory Butte in Utah. Shot in the late afternoon. I have never seen anything like it, the landscape is almost moon like. This is one of many locations in this area with equally as dramatic scenery. Sadly, I didn't have that much time in this area before moving on to Moab. It definitely warrants a visit (or return visit!)

The Palouse: One of the Seven Wonders of Washington State

A 360° view greets you at the summit of 3,612 foot high Steptoe Butte. I watched as the light painted the landscape in colorful swaths. As I swept my lens across an undulating ocean of wheat and barley, infinite vignettes passed through the frame like a kaleidoscope.

Doesn’t the pastoral beauty make you want to milk a cow? 🐄

Combourg Castle was built between the 12th and 15th centuries on a natural hillock, near a vast pond named “Lac Tranquille” by François-René de Chateaubriand.

The Château de Combourg belonged to the father of the famous writer Chateaubriant who lived there as a child.

He recounts his years there in his book "Memories from Beyond the Tomb", an autobiographical story published in 1849, a year after his death.

Pahvant Butte is a butte formed by a dormant volcano in the west-central portion of Utah. It is located in the Sevier Desert in the Pahvant Valley. This part of Utah was once covered by a huge inland freshwater sea known as Lake Bonneville. Pahvant Butte volcano erupted under the icy waters of the lake causing the hot lava to solidify in the interesting "drip" formations forming the Lace Curtain. Millard County, Utah.
