Butte, MT

original watercolor painting

I composed this image while visiting Utah's Grafton Ghost Town. It is of the Grafton Mesa, overlooking the town and its cemetery.

What is a Mesa?

A mesa is a section of a plateau that has eroded away by water removing the rock so that it now has cliffs on all sides. Though generally considered smaller than a plateau, it should still be wider overall than it is tall.

Mesas are generally found in arid regions with horizontal layers of sedimentary rock that makes up the cliffs. The top of the mesa is called the caprock, this upper layer is often harder and more resistant to weathering or erosion.

What is a Butte?

A butte is very similar to a mesa. The main difference comes down to the overall size and that it has eroded away to the point it is now taller than it is wide.

Buttes generally still have the caprock intact, but eventually this also begins to wear away so that you might see buttes with more rounded or pointed tops.

Finally I found the time to go out and do a little bit of landscape photography instead of rummaging around in my archives. We had some decent light also. And after an almost cloudless day, one cloud decided to help us out and moved itself into the frame.

I had to work fast because the sunlight was fading quickly and by my second attempt at a panorama the shadow was already engulfing the entire mountain, except the very top.

I was initially attracted to the scene by that huge shadow the butte was throwing on to the rock face behind it.

The setting sun warms up the colors of Factory Butte near Capitol Reef National Park. The eroding slopes of Mancos Shale form rills reminiscent of flying buttresses for this desert cathedral. There is a tiny bit of virga dropping from the clouds on the left.

The photo is a two shot focus stack to catch as much detail in the textures near and far as possible.

Sinker Butte is an erosional remnant of a very large basaltic tuff cone, formed by the eruption of what was once Lake Idaho and the Snake River Plain several thousand years ago.

Factory Butte rises 1,600 feet above the surrounding badlands. It was named by early settlers because it reminded them of a huge factory in far away cities.

We hiked on the badlands that surround Factory Butte. The Butte rises 1500 feet above the surrounding plain. It is composed of clay/silt mudstone that erodes into sharp rills, deep gullies, and badlands. The Butte was named by Mormon settlers of the area because of its similarity to a woolen mill in Provo, Utah.

Dipping beds of vivid red Triassic Chugwater formation are exposed in this small butte along the road to Horseshoe Bend in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Wyoming.

Geologic note: The Chugwater Formation is a Triassic-age sequence of red siltstone , sandstone and some shale deposited about 240 million years ago in shallow marine, broad tidal flats and coastal-plain environments. Small amounts of iron oxides in the sediments give the striking crimson hue that makes the cliffs and hills in this part of the Recreation Area so distinctive.

The sun lights up Bell Butte (r) and an unnamed butte in Valley of the Gods, with Monument Valley on the horizon. The hazy atmosphere was due in part to the numerous vehicles driving the local dirt roads, seeking a place to watch the annular eclipse of the sun.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year, with good light and cooperative subjects throughout 2024!

some advice for 2024 shared from readers of the NYT:

We are all juggling so many balls. Differentiate between glass balls and rubber balls — and don’t be afraid to drop the rubber balls.

Wait as long as possible to get your kids a phone

Instead of calling someone out, call them in: Invite them into a judgment-free conversation with the intention of promoting understanding

Every time you receive a box containing something you bought online, fill it with items to donate

Nothing good is happening on your phone past 8 p.m

Just book the trip

Be a fountain, not a drain

Wear a watch. This way I pick up my phone half as often. How many times do you pick up yours to check the time and get sidetracked by 30 minutes of doomscrolling?

Walk at least a little way down into the Grand Canyon; don’t just stay up on the rim

CP sand loads work west over the New Town Sub behind a KCS ACe. I was on my way back to Duluth from Portland on a road trip and heard these guys get a warrant shortly after I left Minot, and figured it was worth a shot or two.

The moon lit Factory Butte as a jet passed overhead. The Butte is located near Hanksville, Utah. We wanted shoot at night again with different techniques but too much cloud cover and 35 mile an hour winds have deterred us.

During construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the City of Los Angeles found deposits of Tuff at Fairmont Butte that closely resembled German Trass and Italian Pozzolana and was an ideal ingredient to blend and use in the production of cement. The City constructed a quarry and regrinding plant at the base of Fairmont Butte to excavate the tuff, grind and blend it with Portland cement which was used in the construction of the aqueduct's Mojave conduit.

William Lewis Manly was one of the first non-native Americans to see this mountain and he wrote “...stands a peak, seemingly alone, and built up of many colored rocks, in belts, and the whole looks as if tipped with steel.”

La Butte-aux-Cailles is today a mecca of street art. Its "village in the city" atmosphere, with its cobbled streets and walls conducive to artistic expression, has attracted many urban artists since the 1980s. Figures like Miss.Tic, Invader or Seth have left their mark on it, contributing to making it an iconic place.

La Butte aux Cailles takes its name from Pierre Caille, who acquired it in 1543. There were mills on the heights and tanneries, dyeing factories, laundries lower down, along the Bièvre. The neighborhood was once unsanitary but since then the Bièvre has been channeled and buried to become part of Paris.

The neighborhood also has a militant history inherited notably from the Paris Commune in 1871, during which the neighborhood was a stronghold of insurgents.

Associations like Lézarts de la Bièvre play an important role in protecting certain works, by signaling them to avoid their erasure. The works are often ephemeral and are replaced after a few weeks or months. Thanks to this dynamic, street art is partially tolerated, although it remains technically prohibited. This mix of history, creativity and tolerance also attracts tourists and enthusiasts, making the Butte-aux-Cailles a real open-air museum, in perpetual evolution

This is the only structure remaining of Butte City, prosperous mining town of the 1850s. As early as 1854 Xavier Benoist was conducting a store and bakery in this building. Later Ginocchio had a merchandise business here.

Sunrise panorama at Factory Butte, Utah.

Aerial image taken with a DJI Air3s.

Just came back from shooting the sunset at Steptoe Butte. The park closes at dusk so I had to find a place to park overnight while I waited to shoot the sunrise. I found a pullout on a non-trafficked county road, and I fell asleep. In the middle of the night, some local yahoo banged on my car, claiming ownership of the county road. He was armed, I wasn't, so I left.

I lament the death of the Golden Rule. I was hurting no one and it was the middle of the night. Why couldn't he have just left me alone?

The Factory Butte rises 1500 feet above the plain around it. If you zoom in you can see an ATV parked next to a large boulder at the base of the butte. The butte is an impressive landmark that can be seen for miles around.

Factory Butte is the most recognizable feature of a large area of stark, barren land either side of the Fremont River known as the Upper Blue Hills, bordered by Capitol Reef to the west, the Henry Mountains to the south, San Rafael Swell to the north and the San Rafael Desert to the east. I had been to the area around few times before, but never could find an image I liked. Not until I got up at 5 to be there a clear morning sunrise . The above image was taken few minutes after the sunrise .3 shots panoramic from a DJI Air 2S

Crested Butte is a mountain in the Elk Mountains of west central Colorado. The Crested Butte area is noteworthy for being a premier wildflower viewing area in the summer, aspen color in the fall and a popular ski area in winter. The Elk Mountains are also home to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.

In the remote desert of Southeastern Utah lies a stunning geological formation that rises almost cathedral-like from the eroded landscape below — Factory Butte. Located off Highway 24 between Torrey and Hanksville, just east of Capitol Reef National Park, this 6,302 foot monolith was once home to dusty coal miners. These days its surrounding lunar badlands provide a wonderland for amateur and professional photographers alike — an endless vista of colorful desert flora, orange pockmarked sandstone and centuries of relentless erosion.Factory Butte is the most recognizable feature of a large area of stark, barren land either side of the Fremont River known as the Upper Blue Hills, bordered by Capitol Reef to the west, the Henry Mountains to the south, San Rafael Swell to the north and the San Rafael Desert to the east. I spent a few days in Hanksville in southern Utah, mainly to photograph the colorful Bentonite Hills. But there were a few other notable landscape features on my list to check out in the area, and Factory Butte was one of them. On this morning the clouds cooperated and lit up very briefly as the Sun came up.

An excellent examplar of its type, a perfect curtain plunging over pillow basalt.

Sandwiched between Capital Reef, Canyonlands and Escalante sets the Factory Butte which is an oddly placed butte in the middle of a lifeless and barren badlands. The Factory Butte rises about 900ft from the desert floor with mesmerizing ripples and distinctive veins of rock. A couple weeks I tried taking a client to Alstrom Point, but the road was blocked by a huge impassable mud pit. Thus, we had to go somewhere else. A week later, I took a couple from Austrailia out to Alstrom. Near the previous mud pit was now some neat cracked mud features leading into Batman Butte.
