The openness of the parking lot makes the building easy to see.

I can think of a couple of quiet kids in a technical drawing class in a smalltown high school in central Appalachia in the early 1990s who would have loved to have taken a field trip to see this. Connecticut was too far away!

Imagine it in 1980, filled with sexy sweaty West Virginia disco dancers. They dance to "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc, "Stomp!" by the Brothers Johnson, "Jump to the Beat" by Stacy Lattislaw, "Love Sensation" by Loleatta Holloway, "Shoot Your Best Shot" by Linda Clifford, "Can't Fake the Feeling" by Geraldine Hunt, and so on. It would have been great except for all the cigarette smoke!

I might have named it the "Kalbitzer Discothèque" in honor of the historic building it occupied. But maybe Kalbitzer was a horrible person, who knows.

The Palace Theatre is an entertainment venue in downtown Albany, New York, located on the corner of Clinton Avenue (US 9) and North Pearl Street (NY 32). The 2,844 seat theater is owned by the City of Albany and run by the Palace Performing Arts Center, Inc - a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Palace Theatre hosts more than 150 events annually, from public performances such as concerts, plays, educational programs, live comedy and a classic movie series to private events such as weddings, dance competitions, corporate events and graduations. It is also the annual home of the Albany Symphony Orchestra.

The Palace was designed by John Eberson, a theatre architect noted for his atmospheric designs. Although the Palace includes some atmospheric features in its design it is not considered an atmospheric theatre. In 1979 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When John Espinola of Art Works finally convinced them to take the plunge, they were delighted with the result. This roof-mounted sign is of 3/4” MDO plywood coated on all sides and edges with oil enamel. All the lettering is hand-painted.
