The holiest part of the monastery is the large living shrub that is said to be a direct descendent of the very burning bush that was seen by Moses. The bush was transplanted to permit the construction of the altar of the Chapel of the Burning Bush and now grows a few meters from the chapel. It is a rare species of the rose family called Rubus sanctus. The bush is native to Sinai and extremely long-lived, a fact that help lend credibility to the site. The Chapel of the Burning Bush is built on top of the roots of the original burning bush.

Took my son for a bush walk near out home in Canberra. Came across huge termite mounds (about the only interesting life around).

Introducing a local Curlew family. Each time i see these guys they get more open to me being in their space.

This is the first time none of them moved away as i got closer and what happened made the visit pretty special. Some of the photos that will be posted over the next few days where taken at a distance of about four feet

Bush stone-curlew. Burhinus grallarius

Like most stone-curlews, it is mainly nocturnal and specialises in hunting small grassland animals: frogs, spiders, insects, molluscs, crustaceans, snakes, lizards and small mammals are all taken, mostly gleaned or probed from soft soil or rotting wood; also a few seeds or tubers, particularly in drought years. Birds usually forage individually or in pairs over a large home range, particularly on moonlit nights.

Bush stone-curlews remain reasonably common in the north of Australia, but have become rare in the less fertile south. Many experts believe that fox predation is a prime factor in their decline, however there are areas where foxes are common yet the bush stone-curlew population remains healthy, so the true causes remain uncertain.

In New South Wales it is considered endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.

This photo of two Bush Stone-Curlew trying to hide in the undergrowth was taken near Fogg Dam Reserve in the Northern Territory. The scientific name of the bird is Burhinus grallarius. Common names include Bush Thick-knee, Weeloo, Willaroo and Southern Stone-Curlew. They are found throughout Australia except in the dry inland regions of WA and SA that stretch up from the Great Australian Bight and in the south west corner of NSW.

Found in the Elmwood district of Berkeley. The bush was decorated with a number of pictures of President George W. Bush.

.....says it all doesnt it?

The road to the mines was pretty much like every other bush road I'd been on -- soft sand, deep ruts, large thorns, and wildly uneven surfaces. The ditch here appeared to be about 2'. The locals fill the ditches with brush & branches trimmed from the edges of the road to keep the way clear.

We lost a tire to something in one of these ruts. Our driver told us that one of the local bushes has a root that is particularly tough often sharp.
