at the botanical garden.

Native to the Mediterranean and a popular garden plant, say British authorities.

It grows well in the San Francisco Bay Area, as we are said to have a "Mediterranean climate".

This seems to be one of the rarer types, with pink flowers, rather than yellow.

In ancient times the leaves were sometimes used as wicks for lamps (those that burned fat, I imagine).

Today's photo - "MOTM"

So excited to share with you all that today I made Member Of The Month at my gym. The coaching staff are amazing and have been gearing me up to top fitness. I'm currently doing two workouts a day, both HIIT workouts that kick-my-butt and I'm spent by the end. Well worth it.

Cheers.

This was one happy little chickadee when he watched Doc hanging a small turkey carcass high in a tree. Winter in Alaska can be especially hard on our year around songbirds, so Doc takes care of as many as he can.

**(Active, acrobatic and agile with a perky cheerful air, the chickadee is one of the most widely recognized birds in Alaska forests. The boreal chickadee is one of four chickadee species that occurs in the state and is one of few songbirds found almost exclusively in boreal forests of Alaska and Canada. Like the dark spruce forests they inhabit, boreals have relatively drab colors — brown cap, bright rufous flanks and brown back. The boreal’s common call is similar to that of other chickadees — chick-a-dee-dee-dee — but is slower and more nasal.

Chickadees are specially adapted to endure Alaska’s rugged winters. They have much denser, better-insulating plumage than other songbirds their size and a special ability to put on fat quickly. Birds burn fat as fuel to keep warm in winter. A chickadee can put on eight percent of its body weight in fat each day. Chickadees are also able to drop their body temperature at night in order to conserve their winter fuel.)

This is a rework of the photo i sent for the Mail Art Collective about Water as good common. It was on display from last 2 june 2010 at ex-Pozzi Park in Corsico (Milano). Many artists from all over the world joined the event .

This work is about an italian government law proposal (DM 135/09, year 2009) that wants to privatize the management of public water supplies.

All this was in Europe when there were two different resolutions of the Parliament which affirmed that water is a "good common of humanity".

So in many regions of Italy the local authorities have refused the privatization process and affirmed the same as the UE Parliament and modified their statutes to protect water as a good common.

Model: Mariella Tammas, who inspired this rework on the picture: thanks so much for your support (*smiles*). Her photostream is really awesome as u all know, I'm sure.

I was walking south along the bridle path that circumnavigates the reservoir in Central Park; and the view here is basically south, with the CitiCorp building and various other New York City skyscrapers in the background. The reservoir is enclosed by a fence (presumably to keep people from falling in, or jumping in to swim, or perhaps even attempting to fish), and there's a jogging trail that runs along the fence; so scenes like this are pretty common.

I hadn't taken the sun into account when I took this picture; during this season, it's pretty far south, and for whatever reason, it left the runner in pretty dark shadow. I tweaked it a bit, and hopefully didn't distort the background too badly. I also replaced the grayish-white hazy sky with a bluish gradient fill, using Adobe Photoshop Elements ...

Having seen this Photoshopped color version of this photograph, my instructor in a March 2009 street photography class suggested that I convert it to black-and-white to accentuate the vertical shapes of the fence behind the runner. I did so here on Flickr, using Apple's Aperture program, and with a yellow filter applied to the initial image.

I think the result is interesting, and I'll try to keep an open mind for a while before deciding whether I like it better than the color version. However, if you have strong opinions one way or the other, I'd enjoy hearing it; leave me Flickr-mail or email me at ed at yourdon dot com

An amazing flower that generates it's own heat!

Philodendron Selloum's flower is a club-shaped stalk with a modified leaf called a spathe surrounding it like a hood. Selloum Philodendron flowers are over a foot long and contain about 3000 white “florets” on the stalk. The uppermost flowers are fertile males, the lowermost are fertile females, and the middle are sterile males. The sterile male flowers produce heat.

What is truly amazing about the flower of the Selloum Philodendron is its ability to maintain a constant high temperature of 114 degrees Fahrenheit for the 2 days the flower is open, while the air temperature around it fluctuates. The flowers are actually hot to the touch! No other plant on Earth is known to control its temperature, and the mechanism that maintains this is an oddity in the plant world. The sterile male flowers use fat to fuel this energy intensive reaction. This is rare, since plants usually utilize carbohydrates (starches and sugars) for energy. Selloum Philodendron, like most animals, can “burn” fat directly when they need quick energy!

Selloum Philodendrum, Philodendrum bipinnatifidum, Arum, Araceae

Bike v Car: One burns oil and makes you fat. The other burns fat and makes you fit.

I saw her sitting on a bench, having her lunch while looking out over the Toronto Harbor. It was her decorated bicycle that first caught my attention with its multitude of social messages, flowers, and a Canadian maple leaf flag. I checked from behind and the message "Save Our Planet. Burn fat, not fuel" confirmed this was indeed Cathy. I first met her three years ago while doing my Human Family project.

I introduced myself and said I recognized her and her bicycle that serves as a billboard of her humanistic personal and political beliefs. "Yes, it's me. I remember you. We met at Dundas Square." I confirmed and also reminded her that we met once since then outside the Pape subway station.

"You are easy to recognize, Cathy. I don't think there is another bicycle with so many messages in Toronto." She laughed and said "Yes, it's my mobile media centre." We compared notes on the recent election in which we helped our local candidate to victory, even if the Conservatives wound up winning the province.

Cathy was happy to have me take another photo of her before we wished each other well.

I recognized her immediately with her decorated bike with a sign suggesting "Burn Fat, Not Fuel." She was in line for the Bike to Work Week celebratory pancake breakfast in Toronto.

I first met Cathy four years ago and I met her again a year ago. She is always friendly and I enjoy it when our paths cross.

To my surprise she remembered details about me and asked how I was doing.

Intestinal Health

Green bananas contain compounds called short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which nourish the cell tissue lining of the small intestine, dramatically enhancing the body's capacity to absorb nutrients.

Colonic Cancer Prevention

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), SCFAs also have a protective role in preventing cancer of the colon.

Childhood Shigellosis

According to a report in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, mature green bananas are effective in reducing the clinical severity of a diarrheal disease called childhood shigellosis.

Diabetics Diet

Green bananas offer diabetics a high-energy, low-calorie source of carbohydrates, which meets the glycemic requirements recommended for their diets.

Weight Loss

Green bananas help boost metabolism, increasing the body's capacity to burn fat, which is beneficial for overweight individuals. They are also a high-energy food that is beneficial to athletes.

Amongst the numerous small protest groups this Saturday afternoon opposite Downing Street, including the Gurkhas on hunger strike, Nigerians about the brutality of their government and naked cyclists demanding we "Burn Fat, Not Oil", there were a surprisingly tiny group of Anti-Vaxxers,and Julian Assange supporters.

Their numbers were bolstered by this gentleman who arrived outside the Downing Street barrier. Despite logically requiring government intervention to change this currently non-existent policy, he proceeded to berate the four armed police officers protecting Downing Street's gate about the hoax and civil liberties being crushed and demanded an end to all that.

Presumably being over 50, he has had the BCG and the MMR when he was a child but despite these, a Covid Vaccine seems a step too far. Fortunately, with the virus still running strong abroad (Currently 100,000+ per day in the US, 99.5% of those infected, and 100% of COVID related deaths, being some of the 100million unvaccinated Americans) , a Vaccine Passport would still not get you to many far off foreign climes so there is no danger of falling of the edge of the flat earth. Phew.

339/365 – BURN THE FAT FEED THE MUSCLE

Day 339 of the 365 Journey

Week 2 of 52 Weeks of Feeling Fit

Setup Shot: www.flickr.com/photos/grizzelle/4280608507/

BMI, Caloric Intake, Sugars, Complex Carbohydrates, Protein, Vegetables, Body Fat, Muscle Mass, Hydration, Exhaustion, and SLEEP are all very important words to know and understand when trying to alter your body in any way shape or form. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, build muscle mass, or lean up you need to understand how and why these terms are important. I’m not an expert by any means; I’m not a nutritionist or a personal trainer and there are definitely plenty of other terms and factors that I’ve left out of this. However these are a few of the key elements that I personally think are important.

Ever heard people recommending that you eat 5-7 SMALL meals a day? It serves two main purposes. One, it helps to speed up your metabolism because it’s constantly working to burn fat. For the second point I like to use the analogy of a car and gasoline. Some people think that that because they haven’t eaten all day it’s ok to stuff yourself at night with all of the “leftover” calories from the day. Now for the explanation that debunks that common impression. Imagine driving your car from Los Angeles to New York. Now equate that drive to a day in YOUR Life. Waking up, taking a shower, working, lunch, going to the gym, etc. Now in order for your car to make it from California to New York, you’ll have to put fuel into the tank (food in your stomach). If you were to put ALL of the fuel into the tank at the beginning of the journey, most of it would spill out and you’d quickly run out of fuel before you made it out of the state. If you tried to wait until you were almost there before filling up the tank with everything you had, you wouldn’t make it very far either. With that being said, if you were to make many stops along the way as the day progressed, you’d arrive at your destination with time to spare. The same thing applies to your body and food. 5-7 small balanced meals throughout the day is key.

Keep in mind that everybody is different and no workout routine will work the same for one person as it will for another. I’ll save the conversation about supplements for another week. Until then remember they are called “SUPPLIMENTS” for a reason. They aren’t called “REPLACEMENTS”! Know the difference.

I almost forgot. If you haven’t read the book BURN THE FAT FEED THE MUSCLE (by Tom Venuto), you should. It’s an excellent read.

In the context of some religions, temptation is the inclination to sin. Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiosity, desire or fear of loss.

The temptation of Christ is detailed in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. According to these texts, after being baptised by John the Baptist, Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in the Judaean Desert. During this time, Satan appeared to Jesus and tried to tempt him. Jesus having refused each temptation, the devil then departed and Jesus returned to Galilee.

The devil tempts Jesus to:

Make bread out of stones to relieve his own hunger.

Jump from a pinnacle and rely on angels to break his fall.

Worship the devil in return for all the kingdoms of the world.

Fasting traditionally presaged a great spiritual struggle. Elijah and Moses in the Old Testament fasted 40 days and nights, and thus Jesus doing the same invites comparison to these events. In Judaism, "the practice of fasting connected the body and its physical needs with less tangible values, such as self-denial, and repentance."

At the time, 40 was less a specific number and more a general expression for any large figure.

Fasting may not mean a complete abstinence from food; consequently, Jesus may have been surviving on the sparse food that could be obtained in the desert.

Now the science: --

Did Jesus see Satan or was it a result of confusion due to starvation ?

Unlikely, the human body is cleverly designed to cope with food shortages and consequent starvation.

The human body can go without oxygen for about five to ten minutes, and about three to eight days without water. But remarkably, people have been known to live upwards of 70 days without food.

The human starvation response is unique among animals in that human brains do not require the ingestion of glucose to function. During starvation, less than half the energy used by the brain comes from metabolised glucose. Because the human brain can use ketone bodies as major fuel sources, the body is not forced to break down skeletal muscles at a high rate, thereby maintaining both cognitive function and mobility for up to several weeks. This response is extremely important in human evolution and allowed for humans to continue to find food effectively even in the face of prolonged starvation

Ordinarily, the body responds to reduced energy intake by burning fat reserves and consuming muscle and other tissues. Specifically, the body burns fat after first exhausting the contents of the digestive tract along with glycogen reserves stored in muscle and liver cells. After prolonged periods of starvation, the body will utilise the proteins within muscle tissue as a fuel source. People who practise fasting on a regular basis, such as those adhering to energy restricted diets, can prime their bodies to abstain from food while reducing the amount of muscle burned.

During the Irish Hunger Strikes of 1981, for example, ten men survived without food (drinking only water) for periods ranging from 46 to 73 days.

To think that human life can be sustained for that length of time without food is nothing short of remarkable — a feat of biological engineering that's the result of millions of years of painstaking and painful evolution,

(Well that or God had a pretty good design team working on humans).

Crazy lives and lack of time make us choose short and high-intensity workouts. Moreover, we know that they burn fat very effectively, boost our heart, muscles and bone health more than prolonged moderate intensity classes. But remember: it also takes longer to recover from them! Slowing down from time to time is good. Schedule that consists of merely high-intensity workouts can easily lead to overtraining syndrome that is characterized by fatigue, bad sleep and irritability.
