Open First-Floor Remodel - Kitchen, Dinette and Great Room
Harmonious is the way I would describe how this first floor remodel
now functions. Open from the great room through the kitchen to the
dining room and gathering areas. Current products, concepts and styles
team with timeless design. The home features character-grade Michigan
hardwood flooring throughout, dramatic Michigan cherry cabinets,
granite counters, terrific lighting schemes and glass tile splash. As
with all of our projects, the collaboration of the homeowners, builder, designers and suppliers results in a one-of-a-kind modernization. You will be impressed with the way this home meets the needs of the family, from everyday life to family functions and entertaining.

Constructed in 1854 by order of Henry Halleck, manager of the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Company, the Federalist "big house" quickly shifted from a hotel to the residence of the New Almaden Mine superintendent. When the mines closed in 1912, the building shifted into a series of private businesses until purchased by the county in 1997. The building was restored in 2010 and now serves as the Quicksilver Mining Museum.

Taken at the corner of Federal and Van Buren Streets. I did not know the name of the building pictured here, but thanks to Monitor Encendido, I know this building is the "Harold Washington Library Center".
This building is the central library for the Chicago Public Library System. It is named for former Mayor Harold Washington. It opened on October 7, 1991 and has appeared in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest public library building in the world.

From a registrant photowalk series made for the local historical society. The purpose of these walks is not to take photos of individual buildings, but rather to document the streets as a whole in order to preserve the views for future generations.
Some houses will inevitably be obscured behind fences and hedges. In such cases, there will be a photo of the hedge or fence in question. The photo will, of course, be rubbish, but it will accurately show the best possible view from a public road. Over the years, fences and hedges will come and go (as will the houses), sometimes improving the views, other times, the opposite. Also, in some cases, there's a choice between a (reasonably) unobstructed view, but poor lighting conditions, or a severely obstructed view, but better lighting.
I respect people's privacy and generally use the following guidelines...
I blur: license plates of private vehicles parked by private (1- or 2-family) homes, legible names on mailboxes, recognizable faces in fore- or middleground of a photo. I do NOT blur: license plates of commercial vehicles, license plates of private vehicles in traffic (unless in very prominent position), license plates of parked private vehicles by apartment buildings and shops, faces in the background of a photo. For the same reasons, some photos will be downloadable, others not... download (generally) enabled for: public buildings, generic views (streets, nature, events etc.), apartment buildings. Download disabled for: private homes (1- or 2-family), photos of special importance to me.

nrhp # 72000475- John F. Rague is credited with designing the Territorial Capitol Building, he had previously designed the 1837 capitol of Illinois and was supervising its construction when he got the commission to design the new Iowa capitol in 1839. He quit the Iowa project after five months, claiming his design was not followed, but the resemblance to the Illinois capitol suggests he strongly influenced the final Iowa design.[4] One surviving 1839 sketch of the proposed capital shows a radically different layout, with two domes and a central tower. The cornerstone of the Old Capitol Building was laid in Iowa City on July 4, 1840. Iowa City served as the third and last territorial capital of Iowa, and the last four territorial legislatures met at the Old Capitol Building until December 28, 1846, when Iowa was admitted into the United States as the 29th state of the union. Iowa City was declared the state capital of Iowa, and the government convened in the Old Capitol Building.
The Iowa constitution was crafted in the Old Capitol Building. The first governor of the state of Iowa was inaugurated there, and the first six Iowa general assemblies met in the building. 59 days after being admitted into the union, the state of Iowa passed legislation in the Old Capitol Building authorizing the formation of the state's first public university, the State University of Iowa, which is known today as The University of Iowa.
After ten years of housing the government in Iowa City, the state decided to move the state capital to Des Moines, a city located more toward the center of the state. When the state government moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol Building became the first permanent building owned by the University of Iowa.
