On a total whim, I stopped by the old Builders Lounge forum and the place is a ghost town since the move over to Flickr. There's a wonderful eerie calm to it, and to being the lone visitor to one little dusty corner of the internet.

Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast ends with a great, haunting line. The world falls into hazy silence after the Martians attack. Nothing survives. Then, a distorted, hopeful voice emerges from the quiet; a lone survivor, broadcasting on the last frequency to any fellow man he hopes is listening:

"Isn't there anyone on the air?... Isn't there anyone on the air?... Isn't there... anyone?"

Amtrak train No. 8, the Empire Builder, passing Sturtevant, WI. 3/27/1999

The Empire Builder makes its regular station stop and crew change in Winona, Minnesota for the second to last time before it terminates in Chicago. Down two hours and 43 minutes, the abbreviated stop here will slice another handful of minutes off and depart two hours and 35 late.

I decided to take a risk and swing into the station area for a photo if the clouds and sun were likely to cooperate. The sun poked out and I was off and running to Dakota after several shutter clicks.

Builder Pete, making holes in the kitchen!

The Empire Builder rolls through the Minnesota Commercial yard area in Saint Paul down six and a half hours from hot weather speed restrictions and track maintenance west of Williston. So, it's an afternoon visit to the Twin Cities in stead of early morning.

Carte de visite by Samuel A. Cooley of Beaufort, S.C. Fredrick Hayden Cruso made a mid-career change in 1870. Then in his 40s, Cruso traded his life as a civil engineer to become a landscape architect. He set up shop in South Orange, N.J., where, according to one source, he “achieved a reputation for the fine quality of his work and his success in adapting the natural features of the grounds to decorative effects.”

One wonders if he was inspired by his experiences just a few years earlier during the Civil War. A native of England who studied architecture, he started the war in the 1st New York Engineers. Under his leadership, first as captain and later as major, he and his comrades provided numerous engineering miracles in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia.

After the war, Cruso worked a few years in civil engineering in New Jersey, building a reputation as a road builder, and later for his landscaping. Upon his death from a stroke in 1895, an obituary praised him for his contributions. “The memory of a man who has been instrumental in giving the people of any municipality good roads should ever be held in grateful remembrance. There are few such unselfish individuals in this world. A hundred years hence, perhaps, the good people here and elsewhere will rise up, bless his name, and erect a monument to Cruso.”

Dave's been working on the property next door for over 6 months now. An amazing craftsman, he's methodical, diligent, and finely skilled. According to him he's also been "Builder to the Stars", having designed and constructed multi-million dollar homes and business' around the world for a number of rich & famous folk. Oh the stories! Based on his work I can imagine all of them being so.
