The summer flooding along the Wabash river has created a lot of good mudflats and some great habitat for shorebirds. One of the best finds was a small group of Buff-breasted Sandpipers pointed out to me by Evan Speck while surveying the area together.

The flats are drying up quickly so unless we get a bunch more rain, I'd say these mudflats will be dry by the middle of the week.

The Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Tryngites subruficollis, is a small shorebird. This species is brown above, and has a buff face and underparts in all plumages. It has a short bill and yellow legs. Males are larger than females. Juveniles resemble the adults, but may be paler on the rear underparts. The Buff-breasted Sandpiper is a very long-distance migrant, spending the non-breeding season mainly in South America, especially Argentina.

It migrates mainly through central North America, and is uncommon on the coasts. It occurs as a regular wanderer to western Europe, and is not classed as rare in Great Britain or Ireland, where small flocks have occurred. Only the Pectoral Sandpiper is a more common American shorebird visitor to Europe. (wikipedia)

The species is Near-Threatened. The largest flock every recorded in Europe was of 28 birds at Tacumshin, Co. Wexford, Ireland in 2011. These 2 birds are part of that record flock. Always a stunning species to see.

My first sighting and shots of this species, and what a handsome bird it is! They are rare on the West Coast.

I hesitated to go out today in search of this bird since rain was in the forecast. So in order to 'get out of the house' I went out in the afternoon contrary to a genetic predisposition that leaves me averse to wet weather. Well the rain held off until after these shots were taken. I parked myself on a driftwood log, and these sweet little birds walked to within fifteen feet of me. The light was abysmal, but this pair of birds accommodated that condition by coming so close to me.

Not a particularly good photo but I was still a tad jittery from nearly dying a few minutes beforehand. I was paused in a clearing photographing a robin when I heard a loud crack and looked around. It wasn't until a microsecond later I saw the shadow above my head and a huge bough had snapped off the tree and plummeted to the ground. Using my ninja skills I avoided it and again when it rebounded back into the air.

I saw this Buff-breasted Kingfisher whilst walking around the boardwalks through the rainforest between Cairns and Karunda in Australia. Apparently we were quite lucky to see it as you don't see them that often in that area.
