Taken at Boundary Bay, Delta, British Columbia, Canada by David
This bird came and sat down about four feet from me in evening light.
David.
I have been blessed to observe and photograph this species on their breeding grounds in the high arctic and they are every bit as gorgeous when they pass through the lower 48 in migration.

Archives.... another image from a photo opp. with this species. They are not all that rare here in NJ during fall migration, but getting a very close and cooperative bird in good light is tough.

Species 635 from my collection of Birds of Ecuador.

Many thanks for your coments and favs.
I was so happy to get both shorebird groups on a Buffy. They aren't common. According to Audubon.org, "Formerly abundant, now very uncommon. Many were killed by market hunters in late 1800s and early 1900s. Much of habitat for migrating and wintering birds has been destroyed or degraded. Many migrants now forage in plowed farm fields; possible effects of agricultural chemicals on these birds are unknown."
These guys show up in very low numbers on the shores of Lake Erie during migration, and always a treat to find.

When a Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Tryngites subruficollis) turned up at Boulmer during last week I wasn’t hopeful that it would hang around until the weekend.
A high Arctic bird that breeds in Alaska it’s a rare but annual visitor to the UK more often on western shores, I’ve only ever seen one in Northumberland and that was not long after I got a camera, the technology has moved on since then.
It was still there Friday night so I was there for first light even though the sun would be on the wrong side. I had the beach to myself and Armed with wellies and a towel I set up camp on the rocks as the tide fell and was rewarded with a close walk past as it came to investigate the washed up seaweed, plucking insects and other slug like creatures happy from the debris.
I was lucky enough to have the bird to myself for nearly an hour before anyone else arrived
