April #conservationlands15 #bucketlist: Bodie Hills, California, for Wildflowers, Wildlife and One-of-a-Kind Ghost Town!
California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.
One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.
This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

BLM Winter Bucket List #17: Powderhorn Wilderness, Colorado, for Cross-Country Skiing across Alpine Tundra
The Powderhorn Wilderness in Colorado is found in a rugged, glacier-carved landscape of the northern reaches of the San Juan Mountains. The area consists of large expanses of alpine tundra, spruce forests, and several alpine lakes at nearly 12,000 feet in elevation. Breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains are available in this wilderness. Above 12,000 feet are two high-elevation plateaus that make up the largest relatively flat expanse of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states.
The higher elevations of Powderhorn Wilderness area characterized by alpine tundra and high alpine lakes, such as Powderhorn Lakes and Devil’s Lake. During the winter months, visitors can enjoy this scenic area while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The Delta Wild and Scenic River Watershed originates south of the Denali Highway and includes all of the Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes, the Tangle River, and the Delta River. The Delta River drains north through the Alaska Range, eventually joining the Tanana River and emptying into the Yukon River. The watershed includes 150,000 acres of land, 160 miles of streams and 21 lakes, providing excellent habitat for over 100 species of migrating birds and waterfowl as well as grayling, whitefish, lake trout, burbot, and longnose suckers. Much of the watershed is surrounded by arctic tundra with grasses and sedges makitg it a popular place for berry picking and for migrating caribou. Recreationists who visit during the fall, winter and spring will often witness subsistence hunting and gathering activities.
The southern stretches of the Delta Wild and Scenic River Corridor are located within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District and contain hundreds of archaeological sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Use of the area for hunting, mining, and subsisting are evidenced for the last 10,000 years.

Opunohu Bay is one of the few sandy beaches on Moorea. The walk from the HIlton took about 40 minutes, but there were a lot of photo stops along the way. In the background are some of the sail boats from the Tahiti/Moorea Sailing Rendezvous.

#hexagenialimbata on Lake Almanor #flyfishing #bucketlist ☑️ #browntrout. Hex Hatch on Lake Almanor - My grandfather started coming to Lake Almanor after his return from WWII. For most summers since, my family has made the long drive north to relax at the lake. I found a passion for fishing on the lake, and in the streams that feed and drain it. Occasionally, when the water and wind were just right, we'd find a big yellow bug on the lawn, deck or trees. Curiousity led me to learn about Hexagenia Limbata -- the world's largest mayfly -- a trout's Big Mac. Each year, during the last two weeks in June, these giant bugs crawl out of the muddy lake bottom, swim up through the water column, and emerge at sunset to float like little yellow sail boats on the lake's surface. Giant trout, normally dwellers of the deeper regions of the lake, move with the bugs to gorge themselves. The fishermen follow. Unfortunatley for me, the timing of our family vacations never coincided with this ritualistic phenomenon. Fishermen fantasize; it's part of who we are. The dreaming is a big part of what we love about the sport. I've literally dreamt about this hatch on several occasions over the last 30 years. The Hex on Almanor has always been an unfulfilled line item in my bucket list -- until last night. Finding myself between jobs, and with a wonderful wife, I snuck away to chase the bugs, catch the fish, live the dream. Check. Check. And Check. How lucky am I?

January 2, 2022 - Terranea Cove Sea Cave at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. I visited this Sea Cave during the Negative Low Tides for my very first time. Another Bucket List Photo Shoot checked off. Thanking God for the safe and wonderful brief visit here, as well as the help of those who were with me at the time. - Some of these are important ones to me, and others I just would like to do. There are alot, but usually right here, right now is good enough :)
I could have just done my photography bucket-list, that would also have been fun.
Lifetime Dream # 85 of my list of 155: I will design and build a full functioning workshop at my house. The workshop will be separate from the main house. I will have every tool I would ever need, from miscellaneous small hand tools to large scale tools. I will have custom designed cabinets for my work bench, and a custom designed cabinet for all of my small parts.
I have always been fascinated with tools, building, wood working, and anything that is related to the craftsman. Both of my grandfathers were master craftsmen, and my father showed me a lot. I also learned a lot on my own- building tree houses, buildings, and a myriad of other projects. I have always wanted my own workshop- a nice big workshop with all the power tools, work benches, etc. And because I am OCD- of course everything has to have its place.
I have a lot of great tools, but sadly I have not to space to have a workshop just yet. I really miss having one, but I know that someday I will. Someday I hope to have a shop to rival the Yankee Workshop!
