Bristol Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, is the Church of England cathedral in the city of Bristol, England. Founded in 1140 and consecrated in 1148, it was originally St Augustine's Abbey but after the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became in 1542 the seat of the newly created Bishop of Bristol and the cathedral of the new Diocese of Bristol. It is a Grade I listed building.

Next in my series of very old aircraft, we have the Bristol Scout, from 1913. Compared to the previous picture of a 1912 Blackburn type 'D', aircraft, the Scout has a more familiar form and layout. Monoplanes, such as the Blackburn, were regarded with great suspicion by both the British and French governments after a series of accidents, and the biplane form, as seen here, was preferred. Ailerons (small hinged flaps on the rear edges of the main wings) are being used to roll the aircraft into turns instead of the Wright Brothers' wing warping method (derived from observations of birds' wings), resulting in more effective control. The structure was still made from doped linen covering a wooden frame, but engines were now 50% more powerful, and speeds of around 90mph could be reached. The difference in aircraft performance and appearance from 1910 to 1913 is quite remarkable.
This Scout is a modern reproduction using the same materials and construction methods as the 1913 originals.
