A day trip to Brighton beach from earlier in the year. The stormy and turbulent weather created some fantastic stormy conditions for atmospheric Landscape photography. This historic pier in Brighton is hugely popular with visitors to the town. It was first opened in 1899 and is over 1,760 feet long.

On a recent trip to Brighton Marina I wanted to try out my new Canon 1.4 III teleconverter, which I bought to use with my 300mm, primarily for motorsport.

In the photo you can see part of Brighton's newer palace pier, the old derelict west pier and in the background Shoreham power station which is about 5.5 miles away.

I had to manually focus due to the low light, but overall I'm really pleased with the teleconverter and would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a bit more reach with their lens.

Brighton? Yes indeed, this is the Royal Pavilion in that vibrant coastal resort on England’s south coast. Construction work began in 1787 as a seaside retreat for the then Prince of Wales, a profligate and hedonistic man if ever there was one. He became Prince Regent in 1811 and King George IV in 1820.

The building is constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century. After the King’s death, the place ceased to become a royal residence, largely because Queen Victoria disliked Brighton so much, silly woman. So it was sold to Brighton Council in 1850, and here it still stands, now a Grade I listed building.

A wider perspective of the Pavilion is here.

I arrived at Brighton Railway Station earlyish doors on Saturday, 1st February, and decided to explore the station surrounds. This view of the station throat with a Thameslink service and a Southern service waiting to depart along the coast were in the platforms. This view seemed worth shooting....

Not really...........Brighton Beach Club

I Love Brighton, The life is so free there.

This was taken from Brighton’s surviving pier looking west towards the old and dilapidated, but very iconic, West Pier.

The most challenging thing about capturing this image was the fact that the pier promenade itself is made from a series of long planks that have a lot of flex in them. Not too bad if it’s just yourself trying to keep still for a long exposure, but being Brighton Pier, there is an endless stream of fun seeking life bouncing their way along the pier at any given time.

Picture yourself standing on a trampoline with your tripod and an Olympic gymnast doing somersaults alongside!

So the photographic technique is not so much about apertures and shutter duration so much as factoring in walking speed and weight before the next crowd of sightseers make it to the other end of the plank that the tripod is sitting on.

Thanks as always for your interest and support.

I spent the day in Brighton yesterday ... as did a lot of other people! Although Brighton is a popular destination throughout the year, I have to say that I much prefer visits to the pier outside the main tourist season. I'm not a fan of crowds and noise.
