October 2ed here and the summer green is holding on but as the evening sun pours down through the trees and ignites the tips of the leaves a touch of Fall Red breaks on through, wish you were here to see.

Southern Alps, New Zealand.

The Southern Alps (Māori: Kā Tiritiri o te Moana) are a mountain range extending along much of the length of New Zealand's South Island, reaching its greatest elevations near the island's western side.

The range runs 500 km north to south. The tallest peak is Aoraki / Mount Cook, the highest point in New Zealand at 3,724 metres (12,218 ft) and there are sixteen other points that exceed 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in height. The mountains are cut through with glacial valleys and lakes.

The Southern Alps lie along a geological plate boundary, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, with the Pacific Plate to the southeast pushing westward and colliding with the northward-moving Indo-Australian Plate to the northwest.

Sun breaking through clouds

My first day off and a grey start to the day hopefully things will improve as the week goes on!!

Today's image was taken at sunset last week on one of those occasions when the sun decided to disappear behind a thick bank of cloud and you think that the chances of capturing anything have also faded away. It was worth hanging around though and I was lucky when the sun overpowered the menacing clouds and dramatically lit up a line of trees on the slopes down from Win hill.

I used the long end of my zoom to capture the unmistakable profiles of Back Tor, Lose Hill, Win Hill and Bamford Edge being softly caressed by fingers of god.(1/40 f7.1 @ 120mm 0.9 reverse ND grad filter)

"A Breakthrough"

What is inspiration? For me, Inspiration is that sort of feeling when you have a breakthrough in your own style. That feeling when your idea comes to light, when the world is reflected in the way you see the world and you're able to present it, in your voice.

Inspiration is inside us. Set it free.

I love being in the middle of a cloud, heavy rain, dense fog, storm or snow. Whether my Leica M10 Monochrom feels the same way, I doubt very much at this point. So far she has been a reliable companion for me, but I'm afraid I'm pushing my luck. I think I should consider having a more suitable alternative ready for certain situations.

In 1939 Asugisalic forces had dug in along the fortified Kushana line in Tolmekia. During the 95 days offensive, the Grande Armée crushed through the line in a daring combined-arms offensive, aided by republican guerrillas. Only the tenacious fighting of Muha's division brought enough time for the Asugisalic forces to evacuate Tolas, the country's capital.

This humiliating defeat would precipitate another civil war in the fledgling Asugisalas republic. At the end of the short and brutal conflict, the Grand Erilaz Muha reigned supreme and the board was set for the Second Great War.

After shooting the "sunrise" at Long Pine Key - we actually stayed till well after sunrise - we decided it was time for breakfast... and then we saw this.

Forget about breakfast!

I pulled Nigel over to the side of the road and we kept shooting for close to another hour before finally leaving ENP to get a bite to eat. You don't get clouds like that every day. I usually only see them while sitting at the office and as soon as it's time to leave they are all gone.

The reason for the title is that i had to break through a large hedge plus navigate a barbed wire fence in order to get the shot!

After reading the write ups here, it does seem to be an unwritten rule for landscape photographers..

We hit some superb conditions while in the mountains. As the overcast gradually cleared, the clouds twirled around the peaks, creating quite a canvas.
