Here we replace the nightmare Powermaster unit off the Turbo Regal and replace it with a Hydroboost unit. This job is the same for the Turbo Buick cars, like the Grand National. This one was done on Art Carr's Turbo Regal, and he was sure impressed afterward. You can see the video of the install on PowerBrake Tv, at www.sweetingmedia.com, along with other performance automotive content.

Getting the right length bolts is key. In the setup on the left, note that the bolts stop just short of protruding through the wheel mounting surface of the hub. Leave out the lock washer, and they will protrude. This will obviously be a problem when mounting the wheels if you overlook this detail.

Brakes are always a hot topic (zinger!). Most of the latest high performance cars have factory big brakes now instead of the standard cast small piston calipers. Brembo is usually the choice of OEM’s in the aftermarket world, but there are a ton of options from companies like WP Pro, S...

Shaved caliper re-mounted to show general area of interference. Note that the 240Z hub clears just fine without shaving the caliper. It was the 15" Konig Rewind wheel that was at issue.

Closeup shot of completed carbon fiber brake pad and related hardware installation. Note that the pads were too thick with the new brake rotors and had to be sanded down roughly .5 mm each to fit.

Here we installed a Hydroboost brake upgrade on Jerrod Jones' (editor of Off-Road Magazine) car, down at RPM in Huntington Beach. The Dodge truck came with a vacuum booster, which may have been fine on the stock application, but this car had big tires, and a big cam which change the situation. We converted the booster to a Hydroboost hydraulic unit, and it stops like a champ now. The video is available on PowerBrake Tv, which you can find at www.sweetingmedia.com

1991 Nissan 240sx rear brake caliper ready to be installed. Note the freshly plated hardware done by yours truly. This was done using a Caswell plating kit with a lab quality HP rectifier I bought on eBay. If I had to do as many parts as I did again, I would farm it out rather then do it myself but the experience was interesting to say the least.

Modified brake baffle plate mounted on front right strut. This was modified to allow for mounting of the larger 4 piston Toyota S12W brake calipers as part of a brake upgrade.

Custom Goodrich DOT approved stainless steel braided brake lines from Modern Motorsports installed

Modern Motorsports rear caliper mount installed. This is zinc coated cast iron piece with machined mounting surfaces. It has 3 mounting ears for attaching this to your rear strut, and does not require stub axle removal. Mine stubs were already out to I was able to remove the brake backing plate instead of cutting it off which is what you have to do otherwise,

Toyota S12W vented caliper mounted to front right prior to wheel fitment test.

Note that both side used to have a similar shape and ribbing. Any strength lost by removing this 3rd rib and side ribs should not matter since the braking effort required to stop a lightweight 240z is considerably less than that required to stop a heavy 4runner at almost twice the weight of the Z. This is my own opinion and nothing more than that, so you'll have to make your own judgment call on this.

Side shot of the completed hub, spacer and rotor assembly.

Here's a shot of the caliper after grinding off the innermost rib and rounding the corner of the caliper off. I wish I had checked this prior to painting and assembling the calipers, but nothing a little touch up can't fix. The calipers were painted using Duplicolor caliper paint which is actually brushed on. This stuff can also be baked on afterwards to make a stronger finish. In the end, I'm not very impressed with it because it chips way too easy, even with meticulous preparation of the surfaces. I'll probably re-do these later with POR 15 caliper paint.

MM spacers on the hubs

Toyota S12W vented caliper mounted to front left prior to wheel fitment test.

And here's teh shaved caliper after touching up the paint. This gave me a change to touch up all the chips that happened during the test fitting and prior to that point. Done again, I would not recommend the Duplicolor brush on caliper paint.

Left: Modern Motorsports billet aluminim hub centric spacer.

Right: Powder coated 240Z front wheel hub. Note that powder coating had to be filed off around machined area which normally centers the brake rotor on the hub. When the hub spacer is being used, this centers the hub spacer and the hub spacer centers the brake rotor..

Using the wheel to hold the hub stationary while torquing the brake rotor mounting bolts. The buddy system would work good here but I was able to pull it off myself without being injured.

Here we did a brake conversion on a T-Bird Super Coupe at Art Carr's shop in Huntington Beach. This car had a 427 Windsor engine with a Vortech supercharger, and no brakes. The video is available at www.sweetingmedia.com as part of PowerBrake Tv. Check out the site as there is Monterey Race Week coverage, other installations, and soon there will be SEMA coverage.
