Each year, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes invites over a hundred artists to create unique works of art using a wooden box.

Here are the inspiring artworks they created this year: they range in style from whimsical to poignant and thought-provoking. These photos were taken on closing day, when the gallery organized a live auction for each of this year’s 150 boxes. The proceeds support the gallery’s exhibits and community programs.

Two of the boxes were created by members of our art community: Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) contributed an illuminated box called ‘Magical’, while Geo Monley and Meryl Rubenstein made ‘Les Puzzles.’

Members of ‘Pataphysical Studios came to cheer for their peers -- Dr. Really was the highest bidder for Dr. Rindbrain’s piece, which was thus kept in the family. After the show, we all went to Stellina to celebrate over a nice dinner.

I've gotten addicted to designing and printing things on Shapways.com using their rapid prototyping machines. This is my latest design for a small box that 'clicks' into place with a flexible plastic mechanism. My first test-print of a similar box had tolerances much too loose and it didn't click.

Belmont Gate Box is located in Starbeck and controls the Level Crossing that it is on. It has a frame of 5 levers and controls just one Semaphore signal. It is the smallest box on the Harrogate Line although it is built to the same design as the boxes at Cattal, Marston Moor and Poppleton it was built slightly taller and narrower than the standard design which is why it has a square base.

Also note that its gabled roof is built at a right angle to the line whereas it is standard for gabled roofs of signal boxes to be parallel with the line.

Of the two cats, Monk is the one that loves boxes.

These are built out of solid semi-finished 2x10 cedar planks, stained with linseed oil. I hope they last a while. I built two big ones (4x8 foot) and two smaller ones (2x8 foot).

I printed and stored a box full of every email I ever received in college.

I've had this jewelry box since i was 10. My dad bought it for my birthday. It has my name inscribed on it which I always thought was the coolest because I can never find anything with my name on it. I still use it.

I opened it one day to find the ballerina inside looking at herself.
