Macro Mondays: Turquoise theme
This is a photo from my archives. I'm out of commission this week with severe back pain. Don't know if I'll be able to see all the Turquoise photos or comment on them. Very sorry...

The Alka Box (c1953) is just one of several attractive box cameras made by Vredeborch of Germany. This example has a soft plastic handle, parallel to the sides of the camera, while some have a diagonal handle (similar to the one on the GAP 6x9 box). Another Alka Box variation is that some included a built-in yellow filter, rotated into place by a knob below the lens (located where the 'O' in 'box' is). I have also seen a knob-less example where the 'O' was not filled in -- it was just a silver circle without the black inside. Most Vredeborch box cameras have the awesome nifty-fifties covering seen here, but some had the standard run-of-the-mill pebbled covering (also similar to the GAP).
So many old box cameras have viewfinders that are almost completely useless - tiny, yellowed, dim & dirty. This camera's finders are the exact opposite. They're large, bright, clean, and crystal-clear, which is pretty good for being 60 years old!
A plastic pencil box lid, of the sort a kid might take to school, lit from the inside with a small flashlight.
As we continue our series of up close and personal shots of common (and not so common) objects.

little box with lit.
I decided to make something completely different, so this little box
( or whatever you want to name it) was born. It was so much fun to make it ,so I made three other boxes as well.
The box measures about 6 /7 cm. diameter and is for 100% made of polymerclay.
Sorry buddy, no means no! This male box turtle was attempting to mate with this female, but she thwarted his efforts by retreating into her shell (she was already in her shell when I encountered them). If the female was carrying eggs, they were probably already fertilized which is a possible reason for the rejection. Female box turtles can store sperm for months or even years, but I am not sure if they do so when their current clutch is already fertilized. Maybe one of you can help answer this question?? Shot with a 300mm lens. -MA
More boxes made from recycled wool sweaters. The brown, blue and orange fabric is a vintage print. Glass beads accent the corners where they've been nipped and tucked. See my profile for more info.
The box joints fit well though a hair loose. These are half inch pins, two 1/8 chippers in the Freud Dado set. A perfect fit would require narrowing the dado set a few thousandths but it's good enough as is.
Daytime photo, Home Depot "urban format" on Halsted in Lincoln Park. Yes, it's two full stories (a first for the chain) and 85,000 sq ft., with some liner retail; garden is in the front, quick hardware purchases (screwdrivers, light bulbs) on one, and more involved items (paint, faucets) on two. Two levels of parking sit on the roof, behind the signage.
The neighbors initially opposed a proposal to build residences here, so the developer's Plan B was this. It's terribly out of scale (almost 60' tall and 80,000 sf in a three-story neighborhood), but is successful enough to warrant more.

The Somerset & Dorset Type 1 box at Cole was situated a the south end of the up platform. The wooden structure opened in 1879 and contained a Steven & Sons Tappet frame of 14 levers including 3 push-pull levers, controlled the entrance to the small goods yard situated on the down side and two mains crossovers. The goods yard closed on 5th April 1965, the box following on 31st May 1965.

The "box of chocolates" cookies are totally stolen from Cookie Genius Maryann (Cookieartisan)....with permission, of course! It was such a brilliant idea that I sooo badly wanted to try it out for the bakery. I added some of our very popular cake truffles to the box too. We'll put these out as samples...hopefully people may order a little earlier!
Brayton Signal Box was a NER designed box that was situated south of Selby on the East Coast Main Line. It controlled rail traffic at Brayton Junction which was the route from Selby off to the port town of Goole which branched off the ECML. It became a Gate Box in 1973 controlling the level crossing and closed on 6th March 1988. The box has long been demolished.

Modified to two dollar bills from two squares.
I prefer to match the original model as close as possible, but in this case I was short on paper and had to make a few adjustments. I still like the final result, resembles a candy and still holds together with a minimum amount of folds. This is a simple and easy box to make. I raised the lid 1/8" for easy opening.
The challenge was to take a photo with a not so good camera but to try and do the best you can.I think my try out with the kodak did the trick.......
welcome to my neighborhood! this photo was taken just a couple blocks from where i live. as can be seen peeking out from behind the road construction chaos, we have a fab old movie palace here :-)
this venue, the music box theater, was designed by louis simon and opened in 1929. it's interior has been beautifully restored, and it is a popular place to see indie and foreign films.
Boxmaking is just like bookbinding, except different.
(It takes the same kind of hand skills). These boxes were made in a workshop with Barbara Mauriello called A World of Boxes.
First build of boxes ten years ago... now, more room for weapons and other stuffs ;)
